AWS M1 Workshop 1

The vertical column shown in Figure 1, which has the length 12 m, is supported in the ends as
simply supported. And subjected to a vertical load P. For buckling around the strong axis (z) the
column is only supported in the top and bottom. For buckling around the weak axis, the column
is furthermore supported at the mid span. The column is hot rolled.
The column is made of steel with E = 2.1 105 MPa.

For the shown profile and structure, determine:


1. The cross section area and moment of inertia about the two axes
2. The critical load for the column
3. Assuming the allowable stress for the column is 235 MPa, determine the maximum
value of p that can be applied if only 50% of the critical load P is applied at the same
time.
You can experiment with solving the same problem using Ansys Workbench! But a presentation
of the results should be ready for the next class
