Your body is a powerful machine. It is capable of doing all sorts of things by itself. But one thing
it cannot do is make vitamins. Your body however is able to get the vitamins it needs from the foods
you eat because different foods contain different vitamins. The key is to eat different foods to get an
assortment of vitamins.
Vitamin A plays a really big part in eyesight. It is great for night vision. Vitamin A helps you see in
colour, too, from the brightest yellow to the darkest purple. In addition, it helps you grow properly and
aids in healthy skin.
There is more than one B vitamin. The B vitamins are important in metabolic which means that
they help make energy and set it free when your body needs it. This group of vitamins is also involved
in making red blood cells, which carry oxygen throughout your body. Every part of your body needs
oxygen to work properly, so these B vitamins have a really important job.
Vitamin C is important for keeping body tissues, such as gums and muscles in good shape. This
vitamin is also important if you get a cut or wound because it helps you heal. Vitamin C also helps
your body resist infection. This means that even though you cannot always avoid getting sick, vitamin
C makes it a little harder for your body to become infected with an illness.
You need vitamin D in order to have strong bones. It is also great for forming strong teeth. Vitamin
D even lends a hand to an important mineral which is calcium. It helps your body absorb the amount
of calcium it needs.

Malaysians celebrate its Independence Day on 31st August every year. It is a day to
commemorate the time when the Federation of Malaya, before it is changed to Malaysia, was
officially free from the British. It is a public holiday for the nation so the citizens can take
this opportunity to go to Dataran Merdeka in Kuala Lumpur. This is where the celebration
usually takes place. People can also watch the celebration on television as there is a live
telecast of the programme.
The celebration usually kicks off after the arrival of the Yang Dipertuan Agong and Raja
Permaisuri Agong. Other dignitaries include the Prime Minister, his wife and other cabinet
Ministers. There are many different segments of the parades which involve the participation
of a number of people. The participants are from all walks of the countrys multiethnic society
including school children, teachers, soldiers, government and private sector employees,
sports personalities and even artistes. Normally they gather there early in the morning
to prepare for the annual occasion. There are also beautiful floats, usually decorated with
colourful flowers.
There is a massive crowd lining on both sides of the road where the parades pass by.
They applaud and wave to the participants as to show their support. The participants of
the parades symbolise the strong unity and harmony of the country. It is indeed a grand
celebration to mark the day.

School gardens can provide an environment in which students can learn to work with
each other and in groups. Maintaining a school garden helps students to be more responsible
and knowledgeable.
Before starting a garden, a garden committee must be formed. The committee members
will be responsible for the garden work, finding funds to support the garden, scheduling
activities, researching and distributing information. This will enable students to learn to
cooperate with each other like the saying goes many hands make light work. Do not forget to
consult your school gardener when you have any doubts.
Next is the big task of finding a suitable spot for your school garden. Your garden site
should be in an area that receives plenty of sunlight. It must have good drainage so it should
be in close proximity to water. The site should be easily accessible to students, volunteers, and
teachers. Start small because maintaining a large garden will use up all of your time and
energy. Thus it is advisable to select a relatively small area.
Now, you have to decide what you want to plant in your garden. Do you want
to plant only flowers? If so what kind of flowers do you want to choose? Plant flowers
that are easy to grow and easy to take care. These plants should be ones that flower
throughout the year. It will be a good idea to have a plot for vegetables as well.

Read the passage and complete the details about Zhang Dao.
Zhang Dao was almost ten years old in 2001 when her mother left her and her paralysed
father. Living in poverty while taking care of her husband had taken a toll on her mother. She
had nothing. She just could not take it anymore. Hence, Zhang Dao who was left with her father
took over the heavy responsibility to take care of the family.
She coped with all the house chores and dealt with her fathers needs before walking to
school. On her way, she collected leaves and shoots to be eaten so she would not feel hungry. She
did not want to quit school as she wanted to study. After school, she worked to earn some money
that enabled her to buy food, medicine for her father and books.
Obviously, Zhang Dao was an intelligent girl and strong physically and mentally. Despite
all the difficulties and hard work, she managed to survive. Without her knowledge, her effort
and sacrifices for her father was noticed by the authority in the province of Nanqing, where she
lived. In January 2005, Zhang Dao was one of the recipients of the Inspirational Individual award.
It was a touching moment when she was asked what she wanted as a present. Zhang Dao only
wished for her mother to come back.
At fifteen, after five years without her mother, Zhang Dao still has a heart to forgive what her
mother had done to her. Instead of hatred, she still yearned for her mothers love and had chosen
it over money or other material things offered to her.

Since this is the first time you travel and study overseas,
I am giving you a little piece of advice. Try to adapt to the

Healthy eating is very important to have a good life. Most
of the time, we get ill because we eat wrongly. Here are some
tips on how to eat healthily.
First of all we must eat nutritious food. We must make
sure that our diet consists of adequate proteins, vitamins and
carbohydrates.
We must drink lots of fresh water. Water helps to keep our
body cool and also helps to flush out toxins. Fruit juices like
fresh orange juice or carrot juice are very good for health. So,
we can alternate fresh water with fresh fruit juices.
Though fast food is very popular and easily available,
eating at home will keep us healthy. Home-cooked food is
clean and fresh ingredients are used.

Dear Lili,
How are you and your new school? I am still adjusting
myself to my new school and hostel life although I have been
here for almost a month. Time really flies as I am always busy
with so many things to do. I hope you are adapting well to your
new school.
Firstly let me tell you something about my school. There
are eight girls staying in my dormitory. They come from Perak,
Kedah, Penang and Selangor. Aini is my classmate and also
my dorm mate. I need to be disciplined to survive staying here.
Everything has to be done according to the hostel rules. We
have to switch off the light by 11.30 p.m. and everyone has to
be in bed. The prefects will check each dorm to ensure that no
one is still walking around at that time.
There are only 24 students in my class who come from
all over Malaysia. Some of them are really talkative and there
are a few very quiet ones. However, we do not have much
problem in doing group work. All of us cooperate in doing our
work. We were able to decorate the class in just three days.
The teachers are friendly and helpful too. I can meet any of
them if I do not understand a lesson.
I think I shall stop writing because I still have some
homework to do. Please write to tell me about your new
school. I am looking forward to hearing from you soon. Good
bye for now.

I go to SMK Taman Matahari. I live in Georgetown in the state
of Penang. I live in a single storey house with my parents and
two younger twin sisters. Both my parents are teachers. My
father teaches mathematics in my school while my mother
teaches in a primary school. My twin sisters who are two years

They are very close to each other.
My hobbies are sketching and singing. I sometimes go to

I enjoy playing basketball. I am in my school basketball
