What is CALL
Computer assisted language learning (CALL) may be defined as the
search for and study of applications of the computer in language
teaching and learning. And it is about programs have the potential
to improve all learner's skills and provide students with the power
to control the speed, timing, and the materials they want and
allows students to work at their own level.

The development of CALL

The development of CALL can be divided into three main stages:
1-Behaviourist CALL
2-Communicative
CALL
3-Integrative CALL

Behaviourist CALL
In the 1960's and 1970's the first form of computer assisted
language learning featured repetitive language drills, the
so-called drill -and- practice method. It was mainly used for
extensive drills, explicit grammar instruction, and translation
tests.

Communicative CALL
Emerged in the 1970's and 1980's as a reaction to the behaviorist
approach to language learning. Proponents of communicative CALL
stressed that CALL, should focus more on using forms rather than
on the forms themselves. Grammar should be taught implicitly and
students should be encouraged to generate original utterances
instead of manipulating prefabricated forms.

Integrative CALL
The last stage of computer assisted language learning. It
seeks both to integrate the various skills of language learning
and to integrate technology more fully into language learning.
To this end the multimedia- networked computer provides a
range of informational, communicative, and publishing tools
that are potentially available to every student.

types of CALL programs

1) CALL- specific software
Applications designed to develop and facilitate language
learning such as CD-ROMs, web-based interactive language
learning exercises/ quizzes (see CD-ROM examples for
language learning)

2- Generic software
Applications designed for general purposes, such as wordprocessors (Word), presentation software (PowerPoint, see
an e-book made by students "Many Moons"), and
spreadsheet (Excel), that can be used to support language
learning

3-web-based learning programs

Online dictionaries, online encyclopedias, online
concordancers, blog, news/ magazine sites, etc.
4-computer-mediated communication (CMC) programs
Synchronous-online chat: asynchronous-email, discussion
forum, message board

web-based CALL
1- Massive open online course (MOOC)

2- Computer mediated communication (CMC)

3- Mobile assisted language learning (MALL)

MOOC
Massive open online course (MOOC) is a free web-based
distance learning program that is designed for the participation
of large numbers of geographically dispersed students.
This video explains more what is MOOC
https://youtu.be/eW3gMGqcZQc

The advantages of MOOC

MOOCs bring people together
Learning at your own pace, following your own
schedule
Anyone can sign up for a MOOC class
Making classes more attractive and
more meaningful
MOOCs keep the competitive edge

CMC
Computer mediated communication, it provides authentic
synchronous and asynchronous communication channels.
Language learners can communicate directly, inexpensively,
and conveniently with other learners or native speakers of the
target language at any time in any place.
