Cunoscut, r`spl`tit [i urm`rit de toate imperiile
care-[i disputau \n epoc` influen]a asupra }`rilor
Romne, Manuc Bei a fost \n egal` m`sur`
negustor, bancher, antreprenor, aventurier [i
agent secret.
N`scut \n 1769, la Rusciuc (ast`zi Ruse, \n
Bulgaria) Manuc a \nv`]at limbile [i practica vie]ii
de la un negustor armean din Ia[i. Energic, ager
[i amabil, Manuc avea ...darul vorbirii [i al
prevederii, descurca pe to]i din nenorocire.
Scurt`tura lui c`tre bog`]ie s-a numit Tersenicli
Oglu, guvernatorul-bandit al Rusciucului, c`ruia
Manuc i-a dat bani cu o singur` condi]ie s` se
\mprumute numai de la el. Cum Tersenicli era
extrem de solvabil, Manuc ajunge rapid primnegustor [i vistier al Rusciucului, Serdar & Paharnic.

Care va urca spectaculos \n ierharhia otoman`,
ajungnd chiar Mare Vizir.
{i chiar [i dup` uciderea lui Bairactar, Manuc
Bei iese tot \n c[tig legenda zice c` a fugit cu
aurul marelui vizir ascuns \n butoaie cu pe[te, \n
ajunul asasin`rii acestuia la Constantinopole.
Dup` aceste aventuri, Manuc Bei se refugiaz`
la nord de Dun`re [i \ncepe s` opereze din
Bucure[ti, f`cnd ce [tie el mai bine s` fac`: ajut`
pe toat` lumea.
|i informeaz` pe ru[i despre mi[c`rile armatei
otomane. Devine diplomat al ambelor tabere [i
negociaz` \n numele fiec`reia. Ob]ine condi]ii mai

bune pentru turci. Salveaz` boierii romni osndi]i


la moarte pentru c` au ajutat la aprovizionarea
armatei ruse. {i tot a[a, tot timpul, pentru toat`
lumea.
|n 1806, dup` devastarea Moldovei de c`tre
armata turc` \n retragere, Manuc gr`be[te [i
deviaz` retragerea turcilor prin Valahia, salvnd
astfel Bucure[tii de la distrugere sigur`. Motiv
pentru care mai trziu va fi l`sat s` cumpere
terenul din preajma fostei Cur]i Domne[ti pe care
va ridica Hanul lui Manuc. |n 1810 este \n mod
oficial r`spl`tit pentru spionaj Manuc este
decorat cu crucea Sf. Vladimir, pentru ajutorul dat
ru[ilor \n r`zboi.

\n regiunea Predealului, Manuc \ncepe s` practice
agricultura modern`, organizat` pe latifundii
mari [i avnd grij` s` ocroteasc` ]`r`nimea de pe
mo[iile sale.
|ns` curnd are o alt` idee, mai grandioas`.
|[i schimb` mo[iile din Valahia pe una din
Basarabia Hnce[ti. Care ar trebui s` fie baza de
pe care s` \nceap` proiectul vie]ii: Alexandropol.
Ora[ul lui Alexandru (]arul rus din acea
vreme) este numele pe care Manuc vrea s`-l dea
unui ora[ pe care vrea s`-l ridice de la zero, la
v`rsarea Prutului \n Dun`re. Acesta ar trebui s`
aib` parte de privilegii ca Odessa [i s` beneficieze
de scutiri extraordinare de impozite pentru
popula]ie, de libertatea negustorilor, de libertate
confesional` [i de libertatea coloniz`rii.
|n 1815 }arul Alexandru se arat` extrem de
favorabil ora[ului lui Manuc. Se deseneaz`
planurile ora[ului, se taie lemnul necesar pentru
primele construc]ii, dar totul se termin` doi ani
mai trziu. Manuc moare pe 21 iunie 1817, \ntr-un
accident. Tocmai demonstra unor generali ru[i
cteva trucuri de c`l`rie din Orient.

known as Dragoman and Bey of
the Sublime Porte, Royal
Quartermaster, Royal
Cupbearer and Bey in the
Romanian Principalities, Knight of Russia, Prince
of the Armenians at the Vienna Congress was,
according to the description of one of his
contemporaries a smart Armenian and
overwhelmingly rich.
Recognized, rewarded and pursued by all the
empires fighting for influence over the Romanian
Principalities at that time, Manuc Bey was, all at
once, merchant, banker, entrepreneur,
adventurer and secret agent.
Born in 1769 in Rusciuc (todays Ruse, Bulgaria),
Manuc learnt the languages and practices of life
from a merchant in Jassy. Energetic, astute and
considerate, Manuc had the gift of the gab,
uncanny foresight and helped everyone out of
trouble.
His shortcut to wealth was Tersenicli Oglu, the
bandit-governor of Rusciuc, to whom Manuc lent
money on one condition that Tersenicli Oglu
borrows only from him. Since Tersenicli was always
solvent, Manuc made it fast to prime-merchant
and treasurer of Rusciuc, Serdar and Cupbearer.

After the assassination of Tersenicli Oglu, Manuc
bet and won again his new protector at high level
was Mustafa Bairactar, the Ayan Haznadar, who
would climb spectacularly the Ottoman hierarchy
to become the Great Vizier of the empire.
Manuc Bey didnt lose his luck even when
Bairactar was eventually assassinated. Legend has
it that he fled with the Great Viziers gold, hidden
in fish barrels, right before the assassination in
Constantinople.
Following these adventures, Manuc Bey took
refuge north of the Danube and started operating
from Bucharest, doing what he knew best: helping
everybody out of trouble, of course.
He informed the Russians about the Ottoman
Army movements.

He became a diplomat of both parties and


negotiated for both. He got better terms of peace
for the Ottomans. He saved the Romanian
noblemen, who were sentenced to death for
helping the Russian army with supplies. And so
on, all the time, for everybody.
In 1806, after the Turkish army ransacked
Moldova while retreating, Manuc deflected and
hurried the retreat of the Turkish army through
Wallachia and, thus, saving Bucharest from
certain destruction. Therefore, he was later
allowed to buy the land around the former Royal
Palace where he would build The Inn of Manuc
Hanu lui Manuc. In 1810, he was officially
rewarded for espionage Manuc was awarded
with the St. Vladimir Cross for the help given to
the Russians in war.

With estates in Bucharest and in the mountains,
near Predeal, Manuc started to practice modern
agriculture, organized in large plots, protecting
the peasants on his lands.
Soon, he had an even greater idea. He swapped
all of his properties in Wallachia for a single one
in Basarabia Hancesti. This should be the base
for his lifes project: Alexandropol.
The City of Alexander (the Russian Tsar at
that time) is the name Manuc wanted for a city
built from scratch, located where the Prut flows
into the Danube. It should enjoy the same
privileges as Odessa and special tax exemptions
for its inhabitants, freedom for the merchants,
religious freedom and the freedom to settle.
In 1815 Tsar Alexander was very pleased with
Manucs city. The city plans were drawn, the
wood for the first buildings was cut, but everything
ends abruptly two years later. Manuc died on June
21, 1817 in an accident. He was demonstrating to
a party of Russian generals some horse riding tricks
he learned in the Orient.
