Synopsis, Stakeholder and Dilemma of Villain, Hero and Heroine

Miracle in Cell No 7 portrayed a father love, Yong Goo toward his six intellect
years old daughter, Ye Sung. He always put Ye Sung as his priority as he save all
his payment just to buy a Sailormoon bag for her. In that winter, Yonggoo who
has mental impaired being accused for molested and murdering a police
commissioners daughter. It is happened when the police commissioners
daughter dies in a freak accident where she slips on ice and sustained a fatal
injury at the back of her head while taking Yonggoo to other shop that sell the
Sailormoon bag. Hence, the in charge police has taking advantage on his
disability by forcing him to admit committing the crime and at the same time
ignoring the evident. Thus, Yonggoo is imprisoned in cell no 7 with injustice death
sentence. While him in prison, the gang leader Yong Ho treated him so badly
after read his crime file. But, Yonggoo sill save his inmate from being stabbed by
rival gang leader despite the treatment he been received. Over the time, the
inmates started to doubt about the accusation on him. So they started to believe
in him and helping him to reverse the verdict during his retrial.
The stakeholders in this story are YeSung and cell no 7 inmates. YeSung is
Yonggoo daughter who is being illegally smuggled into the cell since his father
eager to see her. While, the inmates is the second major stakeholder in this story
because they always help Yonggoo in preparing evidences to reverse the verdict,
bravely smuggling a girl into the cell as well as helping them to escape from the
prison.
The villain of the story is the police commissioner because he did not portrayed a
proper attitude that a police should have. He cannot accept the fact that his
daughter is dead because of slipping on the ice. He also ignored the evidences
and released his anger by beating Yonggoo right before the retrial begins. He
also forced Yonggoo to admit the crime even he knows about Yonggoo disability
by threaten to kill Yesung.
The hero in this story is Yonggoo because he portrayed how a good father should
be and bravery. He is a good father to his daughter and a good friend to cell no 7
inmates. He is bravely rescued one of his inmate from being stabbed and a
prison warden during the fire incident at prison despite of treatment received by
him. He also bravely accepts the death sentence even he has the evidences that
will reverse his verdict for the sake of YeSung life. Thus, the heroine of the story

is YeSung because she saw how her father being unfairly accused for a severe
crime. She back as a lawyer year after to open back his father case and claiming
justice for her unfairly accused father after gathered all the evidences.

Ethical and Legal Issues in the Movie

The first ethical issue can be seen from the scene where the police officers who
brought Lee Yong Goo to the crime scene for the crime re-enactment told him to
re-enact the scene but ignoring the facts that Yong Goo is actually trying to save
the girls life by doing CPR. The police officers also told Yong Goo to take off his
pants to show to public that he is the one responsible for killing and molesting
the Police Commissioners daughter.

It is unethical for the police officers to

instruct the defendant to do something that is not true and promises him that he
will get to see his daughter if he does exactly what they told him to.
The second ethical issue is when the Prison Chief talks to the detective who
worked on the case and asked him to show the cases file. When he read the file,
he noticed that the report shows nothing like what Yong Goo would write, due to
his mental capabilities. It can be concluded that there were someone who wrote
it and make it seems true that Yong Goo is in fact, the culprit. Furthermore, the
detectives were not supposed to enclose private and confidential details to
outsiders like the Prison Chief.
The first legal issue can be seen in the scene when the public lawyer who was
supposed to help Yong Goo on the case is not taking the case seriously. He is
depending on the fact that the victim is the Police Commissioners daughter, who
is a very inconsiderate man, which will make him lose the case. It shows that the
public lawyer is not practicing his code of ethics which include use their duty of
care and diligence to help people in need. Even when the Prison Chief handed
him the papers showing support from prisoners, the public lawyer did not take it,
saying that it wont help reduce the punishment.
The second legal issue is when Police Commissioner pays Yong Goo a visit before
the trial. The next scene shows Yong Goos face is bruised as if he was beaten
up. And its true because prior to the trial, the Police Commissioner had
threatened Yong Goo by beating him up and even convinced him to accept the
punishment or he will do the same to Yong Goos daughter.
Actions taken by the Villain from a consequentialist point of view
Consequentialism is the ones conduct are the ultimate basis for any judgment
about the rightness of that conduct which in the end it will produce the outcome,
either good outcome or contrast which is consequence, negative outcome.

Based on this story, the main villain is the police commissioner. After the death
of his daughter, he wants Yong Goo to take the responsibility because of the
death of his daughter. He blame Yong Goo and wants him to get the punishment
even though Yong Goo is not a murderer. Jang Min Hwan which is the head of the
prison, he knows that Yong Goo is not guilty so he asks the police commissioner
to give him chance to investigate and find proof to clean Yong Goos name and
release him from prison but the police commissioner refused to do so. Min Hwan
insists to find proves and he found proves that can make Yong Goo out from the
prison.
Days before Yong Goo will be brought to the court for his case, the police
commissioner calls him and talked to him. He told him to admit in front of the
judges that he had committed the crime but Yong Goo does not want to follow
his order because he thinks about his only one daughter, Ye Sung. He got beaten
by the police commissioner and the police commissioner threaten him if he does
not want to admit that he killed the police commissioners daughter, he will kill
Yong Goos daughter, Ye Sung because he want justice for his daughter. So, Yong
Goo had no choice and during the judgment, he shocked the others that came by
admitting that he killed the police commissioners daughter and because of that,
he was sentenced to death.
The police commissioner acts on this movie give negative outcome towards Yong
Goo. Because of him, he does not have a chance to see his daughter growing up.
Because of him also, Yong Goo is dead even he is not guilty.
Actions taken by the heroine from a deontology point of view
Deontology is judges the morality of an action based on the actions adherence
to a rule or rules. It is sometimes described as duty or obligation or rule
based ethics, because rules blind us to our duty.
In this movie, the action taken by the heroine from deontology point of view is
where the heroine which is Ye Sung, daughter of Yong Goo became a judicial
apprentice after she grew up. She wants to prove to others that his father is
innocent, not a murderer. She wants to clear her father from false accusation.
Finally she got a sentence of innocence. This is all she wants because when she
was kid, she does not have the chance to do so. She really loves her father, Yong
Goo. She knows her father wont do such thing and because of her fathers poor
intellect and kindness that makes people treat him badly.

Put yourself in the Villains shoes

What ethical action based on the Golden Rule would you have taken if you were
in his shoes?
In making a decision, a person needs to take into a consideration of the Golden
Rule to guide them in the ethical action. Golden Rule is doing unto others as you
would have them do unto you.
Referring to this movie, the Villain character is portrayed by the Police
Commissioner. He is the father of the dead little girl. If I was in his shoes, the
ethical action that I would take in the line with the Golden Rule, firstly, I want the
murderer of my daughter get caught by the police. Then, I want the legal
authority make a thorough investigation related to the case before he is
convicted. Although I am a Police Commissioner, I cannot use my position to
force the offenders to admit for what he did not do. The case should be judge
with true and fair view by the legal authority without bias so that no one is this
case will be wrongly prosecuted. If the offender proven convicted, he should
undergo the punishment assigned by the court. However, if vice versa, the
offender is liable to be released by the court. By doing this ethical action, all
entities would be treated equally by the person in charge.
Cite the feeling of remorse/guilt/shame that you would feel as the Villain.
As a Villain, when I have found out the truth of the story, I would feel guilt to the
offender. I remorse for what I have done because the irrational decision has
made the offender and near family suffered.
Like in this movie, the police commissioner feels guilty to the Yea Seongs father,
Lee Yong Goo. He was convicted and sentence to death by the court. He was
forced to admit that he killed the daughter of the police commissioner in the
court during the judgment day. Since that, Yea Seong lost her dependency. She
has to live with her adopted family. If I am in the shoes of the Villain, I would feel
Page | 6

guilty to both of them, Yea Seong and her father because make them suffered for
what that they actually did not. Besides that, I also feel ashamed because I took
the advantage of the poorly intellectual people by misusing my position to win
the case. As an ethical person, ones should be professional in doing their job.
They should not easily influence by the external issues. Last but not least, I
would also be ashamed to the kindness of Lee Yong Goo. He willing to sacrifice
his life because he doesnt want his daughter killed by the police commissioner.

Lessons learnt from the movie.

The most valuable lesson that I learnt from this movie is the love affection
towards others, which are affection between father and daughter and inmates
caring among them. Despite the fact that there is injustice in the Yong-gus case,
but he has support from others.
At the beginning, we can see Yong-gu tried his hardest to fulfil Ye-sungs desire to
own the Sailor Moon bag even with his low wage rate as parking attendant.
When finally he can buy the Sailor Moon bag as his payday will be the next day,
but the last Sailor Moon has been purchased by somebody else. He pleaded the
clerk that he wants the Sailor Moon bag for Ye-sung which ended up getting
physically assaulted. Ye-sung happiness will be his top priority. Whatever his
decision is, he will put Ye-sung in the first places. He is willing to bear all the cost
of his decision for the benefit of his daughter. This is portrayed when he is being
threaten by the Police Commissioner that he will do the same thing to his
daughter if he is not accept the punishment. After taking a look at the audience
bench which the Police Commissioner and his daughter are, considering what the
Police Commissioner will do to his daughter, he opted to accept the death
sentence in order to protect Ye-sung. Until the end of the court session, Yong-gu
seeking helps for his daughter and admits everything is his faults.
Ye-sung love his father for who he is. She loves her father so much even her
father is intellectually impaired. She took good care of her father which she
always reminded him not to drink tap water at his work and she is the one who
manage the money to pay all the bills. Ye-sung was hospitalized when she was
taken away from his father. She even asked the Chief Warden to arrest her,
where she will able to see her father again. Years after her fathers death, after
became a judicial apprentice she re-opened the case to clear his fathers name.
After an emotional court session, she finally able to prove her fathers innocence.
Being accused as S4, a child kidnapper and rape killer, all the inmates in the
prison had a bad impression toward Yong-gu. Despite being accused as a bad
person, he always doing well to others. After he saving his cellmate, Boss Yangho in the yard accident and the Chief Warden in the fire accident and always
showing pure goodness, they soon realise Yong-gu has been railroaded. His
cellmates in Cell No. 7 helping him smuggle his daughter into the prison so that
he can meet his daughter. They also help him with his trial. They even collect the
Page | 8

petition among the inmates. The Chief Warden also does an investigation on his
case. He learned the case through the cases file he acquired from detective in
charge. He also requested the Police Commissioner to re-investigate the case. He
even adopted Ye-sung after Yong-gus sentence of death.
