Project 1, Reharmonization, chord/scales, voicings, styles discussion

PART I: assign and discuss Project 1: DUE DATE October 17
Reharmonization of a Standard: EITHER All the Things You
Are or How Deep is the Ocean? using:
a) iiV key center approach with diatonically non-related common
tone major, minor, dominant chord technique
b) Triads over bass notes and modal chords from either the Major
scale or melodic minor scale system
PART II: Review
- chord/scale connection for Stella, discuss chord/scale
connection discuss common names for melodic minor modes
Observations from homework to mention always put chord
symbols on page ABOVE staff, use only 5 note voicings, discuss
common chord alterations in specific metric/root movement
locations, use more melodic minor, avoid 6 on minor chords, discuss
proper pitch area for 3/7, discuss linear voice leading, linear
rhythmic phrasing, development of energy
PART III: EAR TRAINING:
chord tensions, melodic minor modes and related chords, diatonic
chord progressions, upper structure triads
PART IV: ANALYSIS:
- review melodic Minor modes and chord/scale applications in Stella
- review 5 note chord voicings
- Discuss upper structure triads in Major and Mel Min system
- Discuss major pentatonic scales in Major and Mel Min system

- discuss Don Grolnicks tune Pools for Diminished and Mel Min
