Vedic Astrology
Astrology sees mankind as being not only influenced by hereditary factors and
the environment, but also by the state of our solar system at the moment of
birth. The planets are regarded as basic life-forces, the tools we live by as well
as the basis of our very substance. These planetary forces take on different
forms, depending on their zodiacal position and on the way they relate to one
another. The aspects formed between the planets describe these
relationships, the positions of the planets in relation to the place of birth tell us
of their expression in the spheres of life depicted by the astrological houses.
By interpreting the roles of these players (the planets) and their qualities (the
elements, signs and houses) and creating a synthesis, astrology is able to
present a complete and comprehensive picture of the person and his
potential, based on the natal horoscope.
Astrology is without doubt the original science, the oldest of the sysytems of
knowledge devised by human beings. It is the science of fate/destiny used for
understanding events happening on earth.
Astrology is not only the foremost of the outer sciences which deal with the
nature of the physical universe, it is one of the most important of the inner or
spiritual sciences which deal with the mind and soul.
Branches of Vedic Astrology

Vedic astrology (Jyotisha) has three main branches:

Siddhanta (Astronomy)
Samhita (Mundane astrology)
Hora (Predictive astrology)

Astrology as science
It is true that Astrological Science in all its implications extends into deep and
far-reaching metaphysical and philosophical domains, but after all what
Science does not? The mathematical concepts of Einstein, Eddinton and
others have already crossed the border from the domains of fixed form, and
materialistic limitation into so-called fourth dimensional territories. Why should
scientists, therefore, scoff at the implications contained in Astrology?
They seem to have forgotten or at least have decided to completely ignore the
fact that most of the so- called exact knowledge now in their possession,
which concerns the actual movements of the stars, planets and other
heavenly bodies, is a legacy handed down to them by the ancient star
scientists, the Astrologers. They have arbitrarily accepted part of this
knowledge, and just as arbitrarily decided to discard the rest without any
investigation whatever.
For Astrology, while embracing all the other Sciences was divided by the
ancient Scientists into two main sections:
(1) That which dealt with the observation and recording of the relative
positions and motions of the celestial bodies in time.

(2) That which dealt with the observation and recording of the
correspondences between these positions and:
(a) Natural phenomena occuring on the earth, such as weather, tides, earthquakes, floods, volcanic eruptions , growth and evolution of plant and animal
life.
(b) Human physical Phenomena, such as childbirth, death, menstruation of
the female, illness, disease, accident.
(c) Human psychological phenomena, such as love, hate, envy, jealousy, the
sex urge, avarice, greed, and th e physical actions resulting from these
emotional states, such as mating, murder, robbery, plunder, rape, combats
and wars.
Of these two divisions of Astrological scientific research, that which dealt with
the mere observance of th e relative motions of the celestial bodies,
(Astronomy), was considered as incidental. .It was a step-the first step-toward
the acquisition of the real knowledge -the only knowledge which really
mattered-the knowledge of Man, his origin and his destiny.
This first division-Astronomy is recognized today as a science, because
modern scientists with the aid of modern mechanical devices, continued and
extended the observations of the ancient star scientists. The second division
is not so recognized simply because on account of rank prejudice and
skepticism. it has been ignored almost completely by present day scientists

who have made no attempt whatever to study it and rationalize it. And yet
there is no logical reason for this. Certainly there are a few welI known facts
occurring in nature and faIling within the scope of the second division of
Astrological knowledge, which would seem to indicate that further
investigations along this path would confirm the other findings of the ancient
scientists.
Of these natural facts there are three which are outstanding:
(l) There does exist a correspondence between the phases of the Moon and
the Tides. (Natural phenomenon).
(2) There does exist a correspondence between the phases of the Moon and
the Menstrual periods of the Female . (Human physical phenomenon).
(3) There does exist a correspondence between the periods of the Full Moon
and New Moon and the intensity of emotional disturbance among the Insane.
(Human psychological phenomenon).
One of these facts happens to fall within the scope of each of the three
subdivisions of the second section of Astrology indicated above. If these
correspondence are true of the Moon is it not rather presumptious to discard
as old wives' tales, the rules set down by the ancient Astrologers concerning
the corres pondences, which after many years of observation, they found to
exist between the relative positions of the other planets and stars and the
thoughts and actions of normal men and women? After all, these observations
and records were made by the same Astrologers, who firstcatalogued all the

Fixed Stars, who tabulated the distances and relative positions of the planets,
their orbits, and their periods of revolution, and who calculated with
astonishing precision, the cycle of the equinoxes. Surely these men were
intellectual giants, and their deductions at least merit investigation.
Astrology, as a matter of fact, is the knowledge derived from the observation
and study of the celes tial bodies-of which our earth is one-in order to
determine all possible relationships or correspondences which may exist
between them and this earth on which we have our being. Such observation
surely should not confine itself to mere mathematical measurements and
calculations of time, space, volume and mass but should concern itself also
with all other relationships which might conceivably exist. To simply dismiss as
impossible any suggestion of correspondence between these time-space
measurements and the events which occur on this Earth or else-where is to
wilfully close the path to an interesting and exciting scientific adventure.

Importance of astrology
Astrology is the language of the stars. it is in fact the Universal
language.
Astrology is basically a science of time. Every moment in time has a certain
quality attached to it. By being born at a particular moment in time under the
heavens we imbibe this quality. The personal horoscope is just a simplified
map of the heavens at the moment we are born. It is in turn a guide map for
our journey through time on the planet known as earth.

Astrology does not pronounce any judgement. Just like nature, it has no good
or bad. It just reveals what was, what is, and what can be.
Astrology is not about depending on fate as a lot of people purport it to be. In
fact, it puts more emphasis on karma than fate. Today's 'karma' is tomorrow's
'fate'.
Astrology is the science of 'light' and lights the path known as life. It is finally
up to us to traverse the path once it has been lighted. Astrology is amazingly
accurate ... it can work accurately even on a daily or hourly basis if required.
Astrology is not only the foremost of the outer sciences which deal with the
nature of the physical universe, it is one of the most important of the inner or
spiritual sciences which deal with the mind and soul.

Basic concept of astrology

The Science of Astrology is concerned with the observations of the positions
of certain bodies and certain points in the heavens in relation to the earth and
with the correspondences between these relative positions and the events
which occur on the Earth. That such correspondences do exist is
unquestionable. Modern scientific experiments and observation could easily
verify this and confirm the findings of the ancient scientists. It does not
necessarily follow that the planets and the stars themselves affect or cause
such events. It is sufficient to note that certain positions or groupings of the

stars or planets in relation to the earth actually do correspond to certain types

of events which occur on the earth.
To make the necessary observations and to translate these observations into
terms of correspondence with events occurring on the Earth, both physical
and psychological, Hindu Astrologers evolved a rational procedure which is
based on five main factors: 1. The Zodiac fixed background to which all
heavenly bodies are referred. This background is divided into twelve equal
parts. (See Figure I). 2. The Asterisms-Subdivisions of the Fixed Background
or Zodiac into smaller sections marked by the Fixed Stars. (See Figure 2.) 3.
The Solar System-The Sun, the Moon and the planets which, like the Earth,
comprise our own Solar system. The motions of these bodies from point to
point within the Fixed Background and in relation to the Earth. 4. The HousesImaginary space divisions, radiating out vertically from any particular point on
the Earth's surface, and marking out divisions of space, traversed by this point
during each twenty-four hours, as the Earth revolves on its own axis. 5. TimeAny given moment at which an event occurs.

THE ZODIAC
In order to determine these positions and groupings accurately, Astrologers
use a fixed background or plane of reference called the Zodiac. The Zodiacal
Circle is in the same plane as the Ecliptic which is the approximate path of the
Earth and Planets in their motion around the Sun. The Zodiac, therefore, is
merely the Ecliptic extended limitlessly into space.

These twelve equal sections or divisions of the Zodiac are called the
Signs of the Zodiac and are named and numbered as follows:
1. Aries 2. Taurus 3. Gemini 4. Cancer 5. Leo 6. Virgo 7. Libra 8. Scorpio 9.
Sagittarius 10. Capricorn 11. Aquarius 12. Pisces
Vedic Terminology :
1. Mesha 2. Vrishabha 3. Mithuna 4. Karka 5. Sinha 6. Kanya 7. Tula 8.
Vrischika 9. Dhanu 10. Makara 11. Kumbha 12. Mina

THE ASTERISMS or NAKSHTRA

It was observed by the ancient Astronomers that many changes occurred
within the 30 degree zones mapped out by the Zodiac. It was therefore, found
necessary to subdivide each of the twelve sections or Signs of the Zodiac.
Using the belt of Fixed Stars which encircle the Earth at the Equator as
markers, they divided the Zodiacal Background into 27 sections, the boundary
of each being marked by a particular Fixed Star, located close to the Zodiacal
belt. These sections are known as the Asterisms or Nakshatras.
They begin at the same point in the Constellation Aries which marks the
beginning of the Zodiac,. and since each extends over an arc of 13 deg-20',
there are therefore twenty-seven of them in the complete circle of 360
degrees.

PLANETS

The Zodiac and the Asterisms form the fixed background to which all the
variables or moving points used in Astrology are referred. A sort of backdrop,
in front of which the drama of our solar system is played.
According to Vedic Astrology, the planets are relay stations for the reception
and transmission of stellar energies. In Vedic Astrology, the seven major or
visible planets are normally listed in order of the days they rule: Sun, Mars,
Mercury, Jupiter, Venus, Saturn for Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, Friday and Satutday.

Order of Navagraha(Nine Planets)

Of the planets, the Sun and the Moon, as the two luminaries are most
important. Next in importance are Mars, Jupiter and Saturn as the major
planets beyond the orbit of the earth. Then come Venus and Mercury as the
major planets within the orbit of Earth and therefore always close to the Sun.
The Lunar nodes, norh and south, called Rahu and Ketu, regarded as
shadowy or secondary planets, are of yet less imporatance. After them in
significance we can place the distant planets of Uranus, Neptune and Pluto.

Navagraha and the Qualities of Nature

The planets are generally given the three qualities as follows:

The Zodiac, therefore, divides heavens into twelve equal sections of thirty
degrees each. The Asterisms, however, are sections or divisions of the
heavens of 13deg-20' each. But it was found that changes in conditions and
characteristics occurred even within these smaller boundaries and so each
Asterism is further subdivided into arcs of 3deg-20' or into quarter sections.

Houses
There are twelve celestial houses in Astrology and a house is constituted with
30 degrees. They are derived from an equal division of the circle of
observation in to 12 parts. One-twelfth part of the circle of observation
constitutes an astrological house. In astronomy it is the vertical of the latitude
belonging to the place of the birth. The stars on the earth show the place of
birth.
The rising house is called ascendant and the others are known as angular,
succedent and cadent houses. The angles are four cardipoints in the

They begin at the same point in the Constellation Aries which marks the
beginning of the Zodiac,. and since each extends over an arc of 13 deg-20',
there are therefore twenty-seven of them in the complete circle of 360
degrees.

Vargas or Subtle Divisions

It is easy to appreciate that any given sign remains on the horizon for an
average of two hours, plus or minus a few minutes. This means that all
persons born during that time will have a similar planetary disposition in their
charts. Also, a given sign rises on the horizon at approximately the same time
( with a difference of approx. 4 minutes) on the subsequent day also. It is
possible that the planetary disposition as well as the rising sign may remain
unaffected even if two births happen a day apart. In case of twins too, where
the rising signs and the planetary positions are likely to be similar, segregation

of the natives appear difficult.

One of the brilliant method of overcoming the difficulties mentioned above is
the use of Vargas or subtle division. Each sign is divided into specific number
of parts. Thus, the lagna or rising sign falls in a specific area of the division.
Rishi Parashra describes sixteen divisions called as the Shodashavargas.
These Vargas not only help segregate the apparently similar charts, they also
specifically deals with the specific area's of the native life. Thus, the use of
Vargas is essential in order to make accurate and specific predictions.

Sixteen Vargas of Parashara are as follows :

1. Rashi or complete sign of 30deg
2. Hora or one-half of sign (15deg)
3. Drekkana or one-third of a sign (10deg) 4. Chaturthamsha or one-fourth of
a sign (7deg30')
5. Saptamansha or one-seventh of a sign (4deg 20')
6. Navamsha or one-ninth of a sign (3deg 20')
7. Dashamsha or one-tenth of a sign (3.00deg)
8. Dwadashamsha or one-twelfth of a sign(2deg 30')
9. Shodashamsha or one-sixteenth of a sign(1deg 52'30")
10. Vimshamsha or one-twentieth of a sign(1deg 30')
11. Chaturvimshamsha or one-twenty-fourth of a sign(1deg 15')
12. Sapta-Vimsha or one-twenty-seventh of a second(1deg 6'40")
13. Trimshamsha or one-thirtieth of a sign(1deg 00")
14. Khavedamsha or one-fortieth of a sign(0deg 45')

Graha Bala or the strength of Planets

Planet produce their results depending upon their strength or weakness in a

horoscope. Determination of the exact strength of the planets demands an
elaborate mathematical exercise.
It is customary to express the strength of the planets in Rupas and
Shashtyamshas(i.e. units or subunits) make a Rupa(a unit).

Shadbala or Six-fold Strength

Six different sources of strength combine to give planets its actual
strength. These six sources of strength, also known as shadbala, are:
A. Sthana Bala or Positional Strength
B. Dig-Bala or Directional Strength
C. Kaala Bala or Temporal Strength
D. Chesta Bala or Motional Strength
E. Naisargika Bala or Inherent Strength
F. Drig Bala or Aspectual Strength

The Dashas or operational periods of the planets

Application of the dasha system is an extremely brilliant feature of Vedic
astrology. Whereas the horoscopic chart, with its planetary positions, provides
a static picture of the native, the dasha add the dynamic aspect to it. The
promise indicated in a horoscope attains fruition when an appropriate dasha
operates. The dashas thus helps in timing events.
There are numerous dashas system given in Vedic Astrology. The two
widely used are :

1. The Vimshottari dasha, with a cycle of 120 years; and

2. The yogini dasha, with the cycle of 36 years.
The other well known dashas systems are Vimshottatri, Ashtotari and Kaal
Chakra Dasha. There are few more dasha system, followed rarely in different
parts of India.
The Parashri dashas are generally nakshatra based. That is to say, they
depend upon the birth nakshatra or the nakshatra of the Moon in the birth
chart. Of the various dashas mentioned above, the Vimshottari is more widely
used.

Remedy Astrology
Our time and place of birth is not random, it precisely specifies a birth chart for
us, delivering the results of our past actions through the quality of Natural Law
at the time of birth. The act of birth imprints these laws in our physiology and
the environment we are born in. The planetary positions are merely
convenient indicators of those laws, accurate instruments to measure,
calculate and interpret these laws.
The interpretation of the birth chart is merely a reflection of our stage of
evolution at the time of our birth; it does not limit us in any way to grow and
improve upon it. Even though the analysis includes a lifetime of dashas and
transits, one should realize that all of that remains relative to the evolutionary
state at the time of birth. Past actions are the result of past choices. When

people become aware of choices that they no longer wish to keep, they can
change their life by starting to choose differently.
Remedial measures are things we can do to help correct or neutralize the
undesired results of past actions.

There are different types of remedial measures.
