: In creating English environment learning

1. Problems
From the first day I entered the school, the pupils still did not manage to use
English during my class. Only a few of them who are really smart try to use
English, but only for a few words. When I gave them instructions, the pupils seem
curious and flustered since they could not comprehend the language. Though I
have used token system in order to enforce them to use English words more, I
still did not managed to encourage them to use the English words frequently.
Apart from that, the pupils were too comfortable to use Malay language during
the teaching and the learning session. I always remind them to use English even
a few words, yet I found that the pupils afraid to make errors so they did not want
to try to use the English language in the class.
2. Analysis
From my observation, since most of the pupils are from the rural area, they
have little exposure on English environmental. This is one of the reason why the
pupils dont really use English. Since they have little exposure, it leads to limited
vocabulary. Therefore, they lack of confidence to use English language and
caused difficulty to them to understand English. Other than that, the pupils have
less opportunity to use English language so this thing cause them were very
unfamiliar with this language. Besides, they find that English is very difficult for
them since it is uncommon to them. Furthermore, maybe I am too kind with pupils
until they become too comfortable to use Malay in the English classroom.
3. Suggestion

To overcome the problems, I need to use simple English words to my pupils


since they were very weak. According to (Harmer, 2007), we need to adjust the
classroom language we use to the level we are working with. Hence, since I know
that my pupils are weak, I need to use a lot of materials, sources and realia to
explain the words, phrases or sentences that are new to them. Apart from that, I
need to give the pupils with extensive guidance and explicit explanation when
assigning a task to them. I need to be aware of my pupils progression so that I
will know which pupils need my guidance more. Next, I will adapt some materials
in the textbook which are quite complex for my pupils. Referring to (Chitravelu,
Sithaparam, & Choon, 2005), select material that is motivating and within the
ability of students. Since I want to create an English environment learning, I
should select materials that is motivating them and consequently they will love
English language. When they interested in learning the language, this thing will
encourage them to use the language.
4. Follow-up action/Time
I will provide the pupils with variety of activities that will encourage them to
speak or utter in English words. For example, since the pupils were enjoyed very
much with game-based learning, I will come out interesting game in order to
enhance their communication in using English.
