This page was designed to help you understand what is gauss. Gauss is a unit of
measurement used to measure a magnetic flux density or magnetic induction, also
known as magnetic field.
Gauss does not measure magnetic strength but the intensity of the magnetic field.
As a base, a refrigerator magnet is usually around 10 gauss, however some are
made a little stronger than 10 gauss. It can range anywhere from 10 - 100 gauss
for refrigerator magnets.
Gauss was named after Karl Friedrich Gauss (1777-1855), a German
mathematician, used mathematical principles to measure magnetism.
At first I had understood gauss as the measurement of the strength of the
magnetic field. As I continued to research what is gauss I learned that this is not
so.
Gauss refers to the intensity of the magnetic field. What that means is how far the
magnetic field reaches. It could be 2 inches or 6 feet.
A refrigerator magnet is not a therapeutic magnet because it has a very weak
magnetic field.
The magnet's gauss rating determines the speed in which it works, and the
magnet's thickness determines the depth of penetration.
My magnetic field generator has been rated at 1800 gauss. I know that when I
place a magnetic field detector it detects the field through my body. Pretty strong
stuff.
In order to determine the strength of the magnet, you need to factor in the size
(mass) and material (such as neodymium or ceramic) of the magnets. Gauss alone
does not determine the strength of the magnet.
For example, let's assume that these two magnets are of the same size. Magnet A
has 10,000 gauss and magnet B has 4,000 gauss. Magnet A has the stronger
magnetic field because it has a higher gauss rating.
Since size and mass contributes to the strength of a magnet, let's assume that
magnet A (10,000 gauss) is 1/2 inch in diameter and is 1/4 inches thick and
magnet B (4,000 gauss) is 3/4 inches in diameter and 1/2 inches thick. Magnet B
will have the stronger field because of the extra mass and size.
rating and that it's stronger, the gauss for each magnet stays the same. Your gauss
is still only 3,000.
