Indonesia,
the Host Country
The Republic of Indonesia is the largest
archipelago in the world comprising 17,508
large and small tropical islands fringed with
white sandy beaches, many still uninhabited
and a number even still unnamed. Straddling
the equator, situated between the continents
of Asia and Australia and between the Pacic
and the Indian Oceans, it is as wide as the
United States from San Francisco to New York,
equaling the distance between London and
Moscow. Indonesia has a total population of
more than 215 million people from more than
200 ethnic groups. The national language is
Bahasa Indonesia.

Culturally, Indonesia fascinates with her rich

diversity of ancient temples, music, ranging
from the traditional to modern pop, dances,
rituals and ways of life, changing from island to
island, from region to region. Yet everywhere
the visitor feels welcomed with that warm,
gracious innate friendliness of the Indonesian
people that is not easily forgotten.
Facilities-wise Indonesia's hotels are second to
none. In fact, many of our luxurious and unique
hotels have constantly been listed as some of
the best in the world, located on white sandy
beaches, overlooking green river valleys, or
situated in the heart of busy capital Jakarta.
While Indonesia's cities like Jakarta, Bandung,
Surabaya, or Makassar are a hive of activities
for business and leisure and a paradise for
shoppers, offering upscale boutiques selling
top brand names, to local goods at road-side
stalls. Here gourmets can treat themselves to
the many regions' delectable spicy cuisine or
dine sumptuously at international restaurants.
And for sheer relaxation, Indonesia Spas are
second to none to reinvigorate both body and
mind.

Among the most well known islands are

Sumatra, Java, Bali, Kalimantan (formerly
Borneo), Sulawesi (formerly Celebes), the
Maluku Islands (or better known as Moluccas,
the original Spice Islands) and Papua. Then,
there is Bali the world's best island resort
with its enchanting culture, beaches, dynamic
dances and music. But Indonesia still has many
unexplored islands with grand mountain views,
green rainforests to trek through, rolling waves
to surf and deep blue pristine seas to dive in
where one can swim with dugongs, dolphins
and large mantarays.

Convention centers are equipped with stateof-the-art facilities, as many top international
conferences and exhibitions are held in
Jakarta, Bali to Manado, ranging from the
Global Climate Change Conference in Bali to
the World Ocean Conference in Manado , to
trade and investment exhibitions and tourism
trade shows in many provincial capital cities.

Because of her location, and geology,

Indonesia is blessed with the most diverse
landscape, from fertile ricelands on Java and
Bali to the luxuriant rainforests of Sumatra,
Kalimantan and Sulawesi, to the savannah
grasslands of the Nusa Tenggara islands to
snow-capped peaks of West Papua.

Jakarta, Bali, Medan, Padang, Bandung, Solo,

Yo g y a k a r t a , S u r a b a y a , M a k a s s a r a r e
connected by direct international ights, and
many regular and low cost carriers y
passengers to Indonesia's towns or remote
locations.

Her wildlife ranges from the prehistoric giant

Komodo lizard to the Orang Utan and the Java
rhino, to the Sulawesi anoa dwarf buffalos, to
birds with exquisite plumage like the cockatoo
and the bird of paradise. This is also the habitat
of the Rafesia the world's largest ower, wild
orchids, an amazing variety of spices, and
aromatic hardwood and a large variety of fruit
trees. Underwater, scientists have found in
North Sulawesi the prehistoric coelacanth sh,
a living fossil sh, predating the dinosaurs
living some 400 million years ago, while
whales migrate yearly through these waters
from the South Pole. Here are hundreds of
species of colourful coral and tropical sh to
admire.

THEME
Enabling Trade. Energizing The World
Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world with more than seventeen thousand islands.
Which anked by two continents, Asia and the Australian Continent and two oceans namely the
Pacic Ocean and the Indian Ocean made the position of Indonesia very strategic to be passed
by the intersection of international trafc either the sea or air. This condition makes the role of
ports in Indonesia is very important as the gate of the country's economy, as well as the linkage
of the international trade.
The Indonesia government have a big vision for the country that is aimed to transform Indonesia into
a Global Maritime Axis. The vision will be as a priority program for the infrastructure and economic
development of Indonesia. Through numerous innovations and transformation in the maritime
industry, is expected to accelerate freight ow, reduce logistic costs, promote new industries, and
increase economic growth, so that its impact will be perceived not just locally but also regionally and
globally. Energizing The World!

TOPICS
1

Greeneld Port Project: Challenges and Opportunities

Increase in world's freight ow followed by technological innovation in maritime industry demand

development and revamp of Indonesia's hard infrastructure. World ports must be able to serve
larger vessel, provide deeper channel, and also provide quicker and more efcient equipment. Many
countries, including Indonesia, has invested massively in constructing New Port/ Greeneld Port to
anticipate increase in demand and technological evolution and also provide benets to its host
country.
Although construction of new port has many opportunities and benets, many challenges are also
faced, so that mature planning process is highly required in order to provide maximum benet.
Specically, this session will discuss many Greeneld Port Projects, which have been and will be
built, not only in the host country but also in other countries globally.

2 Port Hinterland Connectivity and Multimodal Logistics

Connectivity between a port and its hinterland is vital to ensure the success of said port. The
hinterland connectivity usually consists of roads, inland waterway and railway. Each country
possesses its own characteristics in developing its hinterland connectivity to suit their geographical
conditions. Many countries has successfully developed multimodal logistics concept, in which
roads, inland waterway, and railway are integrated to realize a more efcient supply chain.
How good hinterland connectivity may support port performance, and how many form of
transportation mode could be integrated so that logistic costs, transportation time, and eventually
may support reduction of air pollution will be an interesting topic to be discussed among
practitioners of port and logistics industry.

The Evolution of Global Shipping Industries and

Shipping Routes

Global shipping industries have faced tremendous growth and advance in recent years. It is
commonly known that shipping industry and shipping routes serve as one of the most important
pillars in the world maritime industry, which aims to deliver efcient and effective logistics chain. In
the same time, challenges and potentials were faced by its stakeholders.
Development of vessel size is very rapid, even outside the comprehension of common people, which
then raises the question How Big, How Efcient? Furthermore, the implementation of current
shipping route is questioned on whether or not they could provide a more effective and efcient
maritime logistic chains.

4 The Effect of Special Economic Zone on the Port Growth

Growth of a port in general, is dependent upon surrounding industries. The more rapid industrial
development in an area will increase served cargoes in a port and also have implication on the
increased service quality within the port. Several countries around the world has a concept named
Special Economic Zone (SEZ), which can be dened as an industrial zone which possess several
incentives for its stakeholders.
The SEZs shall be connected with international ports to provide the benets of economic of scale
and also through the reduction of logistic costs. The synergy between SEZ and the ports shall deliver
multiplier effect both for trafc generation in the ports and industrial development in the SEZ area.
How SEZ provide benets to the port will be answered in this topic.

5 Indonesia Maritime Transformation

With all potentials as the world's largest archipelago nation, Indonesia faces massive challenges.
Through governmental commitment, maritime transformation program become one of the priority
in the national development plan. Numerous innovations, both from the soft and hard infrastructure
sides, are conducted as a part of the Maritime Transformation program to give more benet to the
country.
This session specically will address various maritime program both ongoing and currently under
planning stage in Indonesia. These maritime programs demand collaboration from all stakeholders,
namely the Indonesian Government as regulator, and state-owned or private company as business
stakeholders, with potential in investment.
