HOW TO MAKE A SKETCHBOOK

OUT OF RECYCLED MATERIALS

Essential Questions:
What is a sketchbook?
What is the purpose of a sketchbook?
Why do artists think it is important to keep a sketchbook?
How can you make a sketchbook out of recycled materials?

Students will be learning


Students will understand how to create a sketchbook out of recycled materials and simple
binding.
How students will learn
In this lesson, students will be making their own sketchbook out of recycled cereal boxes, copy
paper, and yarn.
Students will show what theyve learned by

preserve ideas in order to produce works of art.

ART TERMS

Art: the quality, production, expression, according to aesthetic principles, of what is beautiful,
appealing, or of more than ordinary significance. (Imaginative skill as applied to representations
of the natural world or figments of the imagination.)
Sketchbook: a book of paper containing sketches/ for making sketches.
Sketch: a rough or unfinished drawing or painting, often made to assist in making a more finished
picture/artwork.
Recycled art: artwork that used materials that undergo reuse or renewal; be subject to or suitable
for further use, activity, etc.

Basic Sketchbook Materials

Fold cardboard in half (1 side of cereal


box.) Make sure the cardboard cover is
on the outside for your design. (Printed
logo brand is on the inside.)
Design the front and back cover of your
sketchbook. Draw all class period. DO
NOT RUSH. WRITE YOUR NAME ON IT!
Sketch your design in pencil first!
Color the entire front and back cover
SOLID/DARK (No cardboard showing
through.)
Raise your hand when you are finished.
I will give you 6-10 sheets of paper.
Neatly fold the sheets of paper together
in half (all at once.)
If the paper is too big for your cover
after folding- draw a line around the
extended edge- I will cut it down for
you.
Hole punch sketchbook/paper and you
will tie a yarn through the holes to hold
sketchbook in place.
