Summary statements of the authors main ideas

The U.S discovers a beacon that was emitting a signal and it was coming from classified
computers. This was significant because this was the first time the Department of Defense was
hacked. Though just 24 hours after the NSA build and found a solution for the beacon, now all
that was left was to find where the beacon came from. The book also hints to another
cyberattack that would occur in two years. Also a change in president happens and Barrack
Obama comes into office. Also there was an idea shown to change the Department of
Homeland security into a NSA for civilian infrastructure, though there was a problem with
money, manpower, and technical talent. So, the solution they came up with is to appoint a
second deputy director of the NSA. They took this idea to Obama and he passed it on to his
national security adviser

Embedded quotation (page #)

How does it answer/relate to the Guiding Question?

The U.S Department of Defense

has been hacked: the militarys
classified networks werent
connected to the public Internet;
the two were separated by an air
gap which everyone said,
couldnt be crossed by the wiliest
hacker(Kaplan 181).

This answers my question because it shows that if

America was hacked by another country one effect
that it would have would that they would be able to
see our Military plans and files. This also relates to
my guiding question because this shows that
America was arrogant that their system was not
going to be hacked and that they were going to be
safe.
