What is so special about Vijayawada? . . .

Well, lots of things are special about Vijayawada; most of them, including the history
and culture of it, have already been highlighted by other writers. So, I will not repeat
what is already said about Vijayawada.
But, rst, a caveat: I was not born in Vijayawada; but my anity is no less deep
because I have spent a major part of my life there: starting as a student to becoming a
leader of trade and industry at the national level. Vijayawada has oered me enough
challenges to become smart and sensible - only the Vijayawadians have a rare
business acumen. But, ofcourse, most of the Vijayawadians became successful after
moving outside as the town can not absorb them beyond a point. In a sense, it has
been the spring board for many lm personalities (both on screen and behind it),
dramatists, musicians, singers, hoteliers, technical super heroes, political leaders,

industrialists, top notch doctors. A large number of them (except the politicos) who
left the town are abroad - particularly in USA and Europe.
The most important aspect and beauty of Vijayawada is the perennial water resource
in the shape of the river Krishna and the wonderful sight of three canals with their
serpentine movement through Vijayawada and the Buckingham Canal on the
Southern side o the river. Thats why Vijayawada is called as the Venice of the East.
These canals take plenty of water to the elds and thats how the hinterland of
Vijayawada has become very rich with agricultural diversity.
Then there are beautiful mountains around Vijayawada town, particularly on the
Western side where the Indrakeeladri mountain majestically stands. Its here that the
presiding deity (Gramadevatha) of the town, Sri Kanaka Durga Devi overlooks the
entire populace and continues to shower her choicest blessings to all. There are
several other important temples; but Sri Kanaka Durga temple is the second largest in
Andhra Pradesh.
With the highest inow of passengers daily from across the State and India,
Vijayawada is a bustling city oering lots of entertainment and business
opportunities to all. Over the decades, the city has been famous for its delicacies whether you savour them in a star restaurant or at a street corner. I am yet to hear a
single complaint on the taste as also the cost of the food in Vijayawada. In fact, many
of my friends and colleagues grab even the smallest opportunity to go over to
Vijayawada - just to enjoy the food - vegetarian or otherwise.
Vijayawada could have been several times better and bigger had its political leaders
(whatever be their political aliations) exhibited more sagacity and sincerity to
develop the city. If Vijayawada continues to be special across the world, it is inspite of
these leaders and their lethargy. At one time, we had stalwarts like, Dr KL Rao as the
MP who rose to become the Union Minister for Irrigation, Government of India, Dr
TVS Chalapathy Rao, Sri Marupilla Chitti as the MLAs. Today we are not fortunate
enough to have such leaders.
In the eighties, we had suggested the Municipality and the State government to move
the sluice gates/locks on the canals to about 25 Kms away from Vijayawada to enable
retention of water level in the canal alround the year. As canals are abutting the
arterial roads of the city, commuting on them (on boats) would be extremely pleasant,
cheap, environment friendly, reduce congestion on the roads and help the city grow
faster by giving birth to satellite towns. It would have made Vijayawada truly the
Venice of the East. Even now it can be done, instead of going for capital intensive
BRTS or Metro . . . but who cares?!
In one go, Vijayawada oers historical and mythological back ground, excellent
connectivity through roads, railways and now air; an unending delight to
connoisseurs of good food; fair health care; wide educational avenues; engaging
business opportunities. It is very dicult to name any other place which oers so
much for so less, that too with a smile. Vijayawada shall remain special for all the time
to come because of the intense emotional touch the Vijayawadians give to life and
living!

There are many legends behind the origin of the name Vijayawada.Goddess Durga
killed the demon and relaxed in this place for some time. As she was victorious
(vijaya), the place came to be known as Vijayawada (vijaya translates to victory and

Bengal . Hence, Arjuna made a bejjam (hole) through the mountains and the place
came to be known as Bejjamwada which later changed to Bezawada.

Vijayawadas Central location (It is a connector between North and South India).

Any city would require Land, Water, Air, Road and Rail connectivity for it to develop
as a World class city.
Vijayawada has all of these (Valid plans from both State and Central government):
Land - National highways 5 and 9, Inner and Outer ring roads, Bridges and yovers
connecting CRDA region(Vijayawada, Guntur, Tenali, Mangalagiri, Amaravathi)
Air - Gannavaram International airport
Water - Machilipatnam port and Buckingham canal development.
Road - One of the Biggest Bus station among Asia, BRTS(Bus Rapid Transit System)
Rail - Biggest Railway junction classied as A1 status. Metro rail
Other investments like AIIMS hospital, International schools, Adventure sports in
Bhavani islands, etc.
(Vijaywada's Family Destination for water sports & fun adventures )
Now that Vijayawada is declared as Capital of Andhra Pradesh, we see many
companies registering their Head oces here to maintain their companies in both
Telangana and Andhra Pradesh states.
Also there are lot of investments from Seemandhra people to this new Capital city.
I feel that Hyderabad will see reduction in real estate prices (around 40% reduction)
and Vijayawada will see increase in prices (around 50%) after the immediate news of
Bifurcation which is justiable.
Also, international investments from Chinese and Japanese investors will be towards
Amaravathi because of Buddhism etc
But the long-term beneciary would be Vijayawada city even if few plans materialize
like Special status to AP state, Shifting of all government employees (huge number if
their families are included which brings in few secondary jobs to the city), etc

Vijayawada is one of the part of the Andhra's capital region and the head quarters of
Andhra's capital region and development authority. It has it's own specialty about
weather it's warm in all seasons and blazing hot during summer (but no complaints it
has its own specialty) . The landscape is really fascinating it is situated on the bank of
Krishna river and the city is blessed with maa Durga called as Kanaka Durga Temple
which is very famous. Vijayawada is a city which attracts tourists so it is one of the
tourist hub , educational hub and industrial hub . It is center of real estate and small
scale industries , textile and automobile buildings.

An ancient city with picturesque landscape with Krishna river surrounded by huge
mountain ranges on either ways of the river.. it is very ancient town where one nd
remains of ancient habitations related to pre buddhist and buddhist era.. In the
present times the city boasts about one of the largest bus stations in the country with
two national highways (one connecting mumbai-Machilipatnam & chennai - kolkatta)
passing through the heart of the city and it is also a major railway junction.. The city
appears cleaner compared to many other cities in the country but it has narrow roads
and horrible summers.
Also there needs a special mention about the villages nearby..

1) Srikakulam (capital of andhradesha in olden days) a village near to vijayawada has

Andhra Maha Vishnu temple(a very old temple related to pre satavahana period)
where Srikrishnadevaraya wrote his book "Amukthamalyada".Also there is a
Sivalayam on the banks of krishna river near this place which people say belongs to
Ravana's period and Ravana used to come here for oering his prayers..
2) Also the world famous Kohinoor and Hope diamonds were mined from a place
called Kollur(in guntur district)a village near to vijayawada and the surrounding
places are very famous for Diamond mining in the ancient days.Even today people
nd diamonds worth lakhs here and there.. U might try your luck ;)
3) Last but not least Amaravthi a noted name in buddhist societies is a famous
buddhist site with a stupa that belongs to the times of ashoka and it is also the capital
of satavahanas ..
Currently Vijayawada and its surrounding are renamed as Amaravathi (meaning an
eternal city ) and is the new capital of Andhra pradesh. it

has also become the

capital of Andhra people for the third time in the entire history..

What I feel great about Vijayawada is purely based on my interests and opinion.
Though Vijayawada is not my birthplace, whenever people ask me where are you from
I say it as Vijayawada. I had a great childhood here. Its a small and beautiful city as
per my view. It has the Krishna river the major drinking water source. This city is
beautifully surrounded by hills. It is known for its best education pool.
The street food here is very good and tasty. It has the biggest railway junction and 2nd
largest bus station in Asia.

It has great transport service with more number of city buses and its very easy to
travel around.
People are friendly and this city also has great political importance.
Concluding I can say that I'm happy to say that I'm a citizen of Vijayawada :)

I think there are number of answers already given;I try to put my answer through my
personal experience: I am a hyderabadee and never visited Vijayawada like many in
Hyderabad.I have been promoted as Manager and posted@vijayawada ,in 1986which
Ive accepted half heartedly thinking to come back after few months. I made my self
to stay in a hotel Called Welcome Hotel in Gandhinagar,Vijayawad.First day I was
shocked at the taste of food and surprised that there is no meals like Plate-Meal which
is very common in Hyderabad and hardly there were any hotels serving full-meals
since that day I thoroughly enjoyed my breakfast and lunch;Even today Vijayawada

I have stayed in that hotel for 6 months ,as I was newly married I had a pressure from
home to rent a home instead of waiting for transfer.I have taken Rail dabba house
(linear 4 Rooms-Oce room Living room bedroom kitchen and toilets). The people
surrounding homes and the owners were so nice that they never allowed me to
change to a better house. I used to spend for petrol 1 ltre for whole week despite my
eld work because the city was in 5km radius.I used run my family very well
(compared to Hyd)with my Salary.
Conclusion:
I went to vijayawada to stay for 6 months but I left in 2002 that I was leaving for USA!
I have stayed 16 years in the same house, the owners never allowed me to leave and my
family members were not interested to change!!
Why? The people and the their Samskaram of course a beautiful cozy place to live
your life!
I miss Vijayawada and the people(no exaggeration please)
