St John Cassian - On the Eight Vices -On Anger

If we desire to attain Perfection and rightly to pursue the
Spiritual Way, we should make ourselves strangers to
all sinful anger and wrath.
'St Paul exhorted us to ...rid yourselves of all bitterness,
wrath, anger, clamour, evil speaking and all malice...'
(EPHESIANS 4:31)

In saying 'all' St Paul leaves no excuse for regarding any

anger as necessary or reasonable.
If we want to correct our Brethren when they are doing
wrong or to punish them, we must strive to remain calm,
otherwise we, ourselves, may catch the sickness that we
are seeking to cure and we may find that the Words of the
Holy Gospel now apply to us!
Let us keep in mind two important Teachings:

'Physician, heal thyself!... (LUKE 4:23)

'Why do you look at the speck of dust in your Brother's
eye, and not notice the beam in your own eye?' (MATTHEW 7:3).
