B&B Extra June 2016

Christmas in June

Please support
our fine sponsor!

he hustle and bustle of the holiday season is still far off on the horizon, but
we wanted to give you a head start on holiday decorating with a sampling
of cute 3-D Christmas earrings and a gorgeous holiday wall hanging. Not

one for cutesy jewelry? All four earring designs would also be adorable as tree
ornaments or gift toppers. And theyre fast and easy to make, so you can work
up a whole slew of them before the holiday hubbub hits. Ease into these projects
with the candy cane design (p. 7). Its a simple spiraling pattern in tubular peyote.
The wreath (p. 8), a clever take on spiral rope, is also a good one for nearly instant
gratification. The snowman (p. 4) and the tree (p. 16) are a bit more of a challenge, but youll find that they are an absolute delight to make. And the holiday
wall hanging (p. 10) will be a wonderful addition to your holiday
dcor for years to come. Happy beading!

PATTERN

Panel

1 On a comfortable length of thread,

attach a stop bead, leaving a 12-in.
(30 cm) tail. Starting from the upper
right-hand corner of the pattern, pick
up ten color A 150 cylinder beads,
one color D 150 cylinder bead, 14 As,
one D, and 14 As. These beads will shift
to form the first two rows as the next
row is added.
2 To work row 3, read the pattern from
left to right: Pick up five As, skip the last
five As in the previous row, and sew
through the next five beads. Pick up four
As and a D, skip five beads in the previous row, and sew through the next five
beads. Pick up five As, skip five beads
in the previous row, and sew through
the next five beads. Pick up five As, skip
five beads in the previous row, and sew
through the next five beads.
3 Following the pattern, continue working in flat five-drop peyote stitch using
the appropriate color beads and picking up five beads per stitch. End and
add thread as needed.

by one or more numbers followed
by one or more bead letters. The
stitches are separated by a semicolon. If you need to pick-up

Edge embellishments

1 On 1 yd. (.9 m) of thread, exit the

edge bead in the last row with your
needle facing away from the beadwork.
2 Pick up a 150 seed bead, a 3mm
bicone crystal, and a 150. Skip the next
two edge beads, and sew through the
following edge bead (with your needle
facing toward the beadwork) and out
through the next edge bead (with your
needle facing away from the beadwork). Repeat this step along this side
edge until you reach the end row.
3 Pick up 61 150s, and sew under the
thread bridge on the end of the row
on the opposite side edge. Sew back
through the last two rows of peyote
along this end, to exit the first 150 picked
up in this step.
4 Pick up a 150, a crystal, and a 150,
skip four 150s in the loop of 150s, and
then sew through the next 150 in the
loop. Repeat until you exit the last 150
in the loop on the opposite side.
5 Work as in step 2 to add edge embellishment along this edge. End the working thread.

LOOP

EDGE EMBELLISHMENTS

Fringe

1 Add 3 yd. (2.7 m) of thread to the end

row (opposite the hanging loop), and
exit the first bead in the row with your
needle facing toward the beadwork.
2 Pick up seven 150s, a 6 mm bugle
bead, a 150, a color H 4 mm bicone
crystal, a 150, a 6 mm bugle, a 150,
a color I 4 mm bicone crystal, a 150,
a 12 mm bugle bead, three 150s, a topdrilled crystal, and three 150s. Skip the
last seven beads added, and sew back
through the 12 mm bugle. Continue
back through the remaining beads
just added, and the next two beads
in the end row.
3 Continue making fringe strands as in
step 2, but add an additional five 150s
at the beginning of each strand from
what was added in the previous strand
until you reach the center of the panel.
Then continue by subtracting five 150s
from the beginning of each strand until
you reach the other edge. w

a color B 110 seed bead and 23 color
A 110 seed beads, and tie the beads
into a ring using a square knot, leaving
a 10-in. (25 cm) tail. Sew through the

Star

1 Pick up a color D 110 seed bead, and

sew through the opposite A in the last
round. Sew back through the D and the
A your thread exited at the start of this
step, and continue through the D just
added (figure 3).

thread exited at the start of this step,
going in the same direction. Retrace
the thread path several times, and end
the working thread, but not the tail.
