INSTRUCTIONS. This sheet is not to be unfolded until pupils are

ready to begin writing the test and is to be unfolded in the presence
of. the pupils.
Tear the sheet along the perforated lines into four parts. In giving
out tests, care must be taken that each child has time enough before
the next intermission to complete BOTH sides of the sheet, if printed
on both sides.
While this is not a time test, two subjects may easily be finished
between two intermissions. If desired; pupils may use scrap paper .for
preliminary work, which paper need not be turned in unless requested
by the teacher; for example, in arithmetic pupils may first perform computations on other paper if desired. In drawing, pupils are to use regular
drawing paper. In language and, occasionally, in other subjects, a short
composition may be called for and turned in with the test sheet.
The "ACHIEVEMENT TEST MANUAL" gives a condensed summary of the work to be covered in each grade for each period, including
the exact words to be given in the spelling test, so far as the words in
the course of study are concerned. A copy of the "ACHIEVEMENT
TEST MANUAL" is provided for each teacher and should be. used
CONSISTENTLY by the children. It will be a great help if each
FAMILY has a copy of this MANUAL to be used by the children in
different grades. Though .it is, practically, the course of study, condensed,
it has a special significance to children because it bears directly on the
tests they are to take.
Instruct children NOT to fold papers. It is suggested that the tests
for each child be kept in booklet form during the year and used for
review at the end of the year. The six period tests, neatly bound together,
constitute good review material for the final examinations. Except in
PRIMARY GRADES, children should write tests in INK.

1. Comprehension. New Year's Day in Shanghai. (From Uncle Ben in
China, published by American Education Press, Inc.)
Dear Boys and Girls,
Strange to say, the Chinese are still celebrating the coming of the New
Year. They call it the First Day of the Full Moon. They celebrate from
January 29 to February 2. Last year the government of China said to its
people, "You must celebrate New Year's on January 1 as other countries do."
January 1 was made a holiday, but the Chinese still celebrate the old date.
For this reason, Shanghai was very gay when I landed. The streets
were crowded and everyone was having a good time. The Chinese seem to
be more light hearted and happy than the Japanese. They sing and laugh
and seem to have a better time.
Love to you all, Uncle Ben.

were cut in two. These are the last parts of the sentences: .(are happy and
gay, to celebrate January 1, from January 29 to February 2, January 1,

sentences and write it after the sentence.

5. Comprehension. A Christmas Vacation in Switzerland (from "My Progress Book SerJes).

The children looked out of the windows as the little mountain train
neared the station. Dear old grandpa was there waiting for them, in his
big bobsled.
The train stopped. With great excitement, the children gathered up
their skis and snowshoes.
How beautiful the snowy mountains were! The cold mountain air turned
their cheeks crimson. They asked him where the best ski tracks were, and
when the winter sport races began.
Up through the mountains they went. Soon they saw a light. It was
their beloved Swiss farmhouse. Grandma was on the upper porch waving
to them.
That night was Christmas Eve. After a hot supper, they sang carols
around the Christmas tree. Then they drove to a near-by village church to
join in the singing of Christmas carols.
Toward the end of their vacation, a great winter sport carnival was
held. People from all nations came to enter races in skating, skiing, and
tobogganing. It was very exciting to see men on skis jump from great mountain heights. They sailed through the air like large birds. The children
watched breathlessly.
After ten days in the mountains, the children said good-pye to their
grandparents. Never before had they had such fun during the Christmas
holidays!

4-D
ACHIEVEMENT TEST SHEET
FOURTH GRADE-TEST D
FOURTH SIX WEEKS; JANUARY-FEBRUARY

INSTRUCTIONS. This sheet is not to be unfolded until pupils are

ready to begin writing the test and is to be unfolded in the presence
of the pupils.
Tear the sheet along the perforated lines into eight parts. In giving
out tests, care must be taken that each child has time enough before
the next intermission to complete BOTH sides of the sheet, if printed
on both sides.
While this is not a time test, two subjects may easily be finished
between two intermissions. H desired, pupils may use scrap paper for
preliminary work, which paper need not be turned in unless requested
by the teacher; for example, in arithmetic pupils may first perform computations on other paper if desired. In drawing, pupils are to, use regular
drawing paper. In language and. occasionally, in other subjects, a short
composition 'may be called for and turned in with the test sheet. '
The "ACHIEVEMENT TEST MANUAL" gives a condensed summary of the work to be covered in each grade for each period, including
the exact words to be given in the spelling test, so far as the words in
the course of study are concerned. A copy of the "ACHIEVEMENT
TEST MANUAL" is provided for each teacher and should be used
CONSISTENTLY by the children. It will be a great help if each
FAMILY has a copy of this MANUAL to be used by the children in
different grades. Though it ia, practically, the course of study, condensed,
it has a special significance to children because it bears directly on the
tests they are to take.
Instruct children NOT to fold papers. It is suggested that the testa
for each child be kept in booklet form during the year and used for
review at the end of the year. The six period tests, neatly bound together,
constitute good review material for the IDal examinations. Except in
PRIMARY GRADES, children should write tests in INK.
THE ACHIEVEMENT TESTS are written by V. H. Culp, I. D. Weeks,
Mrs. I. D. Weeks, and M. M. Guhin, all of Northern State Teachers College, Aberdeen, South Dakota.

Published by The aub City School Supply Co.
