The Impact of Mobile Phone for Work/Life

Balance
1. Introduction
Mobile phones bring many changes and facilities to accommodate our life.
People and mobile phones are more or less equipped each other and ease

the communication between people in many ways either by connecting

through the phones, text messaging using short message systems (SMS),
video call, photographing and many more. People can play various games
through downloading applications and filled in their leisure hours. Other
special addition or facilities offered in the phones are people can access
the Internet via mobile phones.
Here, they can read and send the emails, log in face book, etc. mobile
phones also entertained people through the MP3 where people can get
the music as much as they want. Mobile phones are also useful during
emergency hours.

They are light and easy to carry anywhere.

Rechargeable battery of the mobile phones make them really useful to

everyone compare to usage of the fixed lines.
The question is as long as you use the mobile phones, are you aware of
the radiation sourced by them?

Radiation of the mobile phones give

negative impacts to work and life balance.

Other than carry along the

advantage as mentioned earlier, the mobile phones radiation also brings

hazardous affects to the users and people around them.

This report is

held to study how the disadvantages of mobile phones affected the life
and work balanced.
It is known that the mobile phones radiation/microwave radiation have
dark side affects to the users especially the affects in health and social
life. For example, those who exposed over hours on the phone might get
the brain cancer as well as other hazardous like insomnia, driving safety,
fertility etc.

(1)

Peoples awareness about the impact of the exposure of mobile phone is

still new and few. Why? Thats because people seems to be addicted to
mobile phones and they become a necessity that equipped peoples life.
Through this study, the recommendations are provided to help the society
to reduce/minimize the risk of mobile phones impact in their life and help
them to balance the health and carrier. How would it has to be done and
achieve will be described later. The most important is changing towards
better surrounding and facilities and keep staying healthy is worth than a
sack of gold.

2. Body
2.1 Background of the study
2.1.1 This study is involved about 100 respondents, 60 females and 40
males of Gigantic Hypermarket in Kuala Terengganu. All the respondents
are the local residents and the study has been successfully done with the
full cooperation. All the respondents are aged between 23 to 46 years old
and all of them are mobile phone users. A set of questionnaires are given
and the results are based on their answers. The purpose of the study is to
evaluate their choice of the mobile phones, reasons based on the costs
and identify the problems occur related to the usage of the mobile
phones.

The questions given are closely related to their working

environment and also social life. These agendas are involve in their daily
business. So, the study is going to reveal three main points:
i)

Choice of the mobile phones according to their needs and

ii)

capability to purchase the selected mobile phones.

Identify the relevant matters that might occur due to the current

iii)

usage of the mobile phones.

Come out with the suitable and possible recommendations to
overcome the problems involved to maintain their balances work
and life.

2.2 The Findings

2.2.1 From the questionnaires, it is found that most of the respondents
have at least one mobile phone or equal to 55%, 23% say they have two
mobile phones and 12% say they have more than two hand phones. The
most chosen mobile phone brand is Nokia (73.2%), Sony Ericsson (10.3%),
Samsung (7.5%), Motorola (5.5%) and Alcatel (4.5%).

Through the

observation, the cost of the mobile phone purchased by the respondents

are RM 1000.00 and above because as the employees they have the
money power to purchase their selected mobile phones.

The other

reasons are they bought the mobile phones because they are stylish and

trendy, suits to their appearance, working status and most important is,
the price wont burn their pocket if they want to have the stylish, latest
and trendy mobile phones.

(3)
2.2.2 In the aspect of the mobile phones functions, the result shows that
the mobile phones are used for communicating most rather than text
messaging, video call and others. The reason is, connecting directly can
convey the message of the conversation clearer than texting and
messaging.

Other than that, additional functions and features in the

phones help them to surf the important information via mobile phones
internet access, keep in touch through the face book, surfing and
downloading music and entertainment.
2..3 Problems
2.3.1 Mobile phones radiation can be absorb by the human body at the
beginning people start to press they keypad and the phones ring at any
time it is reachable. Talking about perceive safety, the result shows that
70% of the respondents come to work by car with the speed or
acceleration of 60km/h-100km/h.

Hanging on the phone contributes to

accidents and loss of property and lives. Actually, 80% of the drivers are
not aware of these factors because they think that would never happen to
them. During the massive jam to the workplace, accidents can happen
anywhere especially at the T-junction and intersections.

Holding the

phones while driving can divide the drivers attention into two parts, one
of it to the details of the conversation and the other is to the road traffic.
Here, they are suggetted to use the hands free devices but yet still need
to beware and be careful all the way long to get rid of the uninvited
incidents.

2.3.2 Phones rings and conversation after the sleeping hours should be
avoided.

The results shows that 60% of the respondents are totally

agreed that phone rings in the middle of the night can contribute to
insomnia, a type of disease where people cannot sleep at night and even
worse, they have to depend on the sleeping pills to help them to sleep.
Usually, the phone rings come from someone that suddenly out of your
contact lists. 20% of the respondents agree, 15% quite disagree and 5%
totally disagree with the statement. They say that they are normally feel
dizzy and sleepy the next day and these can affect their working
performance.

(4)
2.3.3 Radiation of the mobile phone can affect the health of the human
being.

Radiation can cause the brain cancer, breast cancer, leukemia,

fatigue, appetite lost and memory lost that link to Alzheimer. According to
the results, 45% of the respondents say that they never knew about the
impact of radiation, 35% say that they knew about it but not much study
have reveal the actual facts, so they ignore it until today and assuming
that mobile phones radiation is not a serious matters while 20% of them
say that they are in win-win situation, either to believe or not to believe.
Thats because the radiation transmitted is everywhere and this visible
danger can yet have no concrete supportive reasons to be thought deeply
by anyone else.

Those who live within 7 kilometers of the mast base

stations are also exposed to the danger of the radiation exposures. If they
stay longer than 5 years, the chances to get brain cancers are higher than
those who live elsewhere.
2.3.4 The fourth problem occur is the supervision of the internet access
among the kids at home. Social problems among the children caused by

the overexposed of the pornography films through the internet. From the
observation, 45% of the respondents are married, 25% are seriously will
be married sooner or later and the rest 30% are still single. Out of these
respondents 75% have wireless internet connection at home, either they
are married or still single, while 25% say that they are not having the
connection at home.

With children at home, while the parents are

working, they may surf the internet without any supervision. Passwords
are not big deals anymore because the children are normally the Internet
experts compare to their parents.

Thus, through the face books, they

knew new friends, meeting during late nights to early dusks, some may
return home but some may not, or some may be captured living together
with the lovers as if they are living in the west side of the world.
The bad influence must be avoided and parents should play the roles to
give support and advice the kids to behave as the expected to be and as
what is required by the religions.

Childrens fault is the results of the

parents fault as they are failed to decorate the gifted white cloth given to
them as a gift from heaven.

(5)
3. Recommendations/suggestions
Based on the problems stated, suggestions and recommendations are
provided to overcome these problems. They began with a habit but in the
end of the day, they became problems. So, everyone has to come out of
the comfort zones and make changes to balance their life and work
burdens.
3.1 For the first problem that related to the driving safety, the
respondents are recommended to use hands free in between phone

conversation and driving. Other than hands free devices, they can use
the earpiece, a Bluetooth device that functioned almost the same with the
mobile phones.

It is safer and less radiation compare to the usual

exposure of the mobile phones.

Government also can take actions

towards these reckless driver to reduce or minimize the risk of accidents

by introducing the new legislation due to the mobile phones used while
driving.

Those who also used the similar devices while driving can be

prosecuted.

Otherwise, the Government can increase the penalty for

hand held of mobile phone while driving. Any conviction in court may not
be allowed for bail and lock up duration should be increase to maximum
possible years.
3.2 Unexpected telephone rings disturb the precious time sleep of the
respondents.

They cannot sleep well after getting engaged on the

phones. The best solution is put the phone away so it is unreachable if

rings. For example, before going to bed, make an effort to put the mobile
phones outside the bedroom. Usually call during the middle of the night
not always to be happen unless something happened accidently or any
other emergency case. They can be put in silent mode as you always do
when you are in some places that require you to off the phone such as in
the cinema, hospital, in the aircraft and so on.

Any miscalled can be

replied back right after you wake up early in the morning. Furthermore,
avoid phone conversation with spouse, lovers, fiances and others over
the sleeping hours.

Its better to chat through the SMS or face book

because that ways are saving the energy, time and cost. Dont feel shy
and guilty to tell them that you are going to bed now as they are also in
need to do so. Say goodbye and other necessary words and get to bed as
usual. Those sleepovers are

highly risks to get illness such as migraine

and high blood pressure due to insufficient rest and sleep.

(6)

3.3

Brain cancer due to the exposure of the radiation is supported by

several studies. One of them is the study by Dr. Hayland entitled How
Exposure To Mobile Phone Base Station Signals Can Adversely Affect
Human. It is found that the mast station also expose radiation that can
affect humans health as well as the mobile phones.

Children are the

main target victims who can be diagnose with the cancers easily.

The

mast station can affect lives especially when the residents are living
within 400 meters of the base station.
Children are involved easily because the kids skulls are thinner than
adults skulls.

Between the development of the nervous system, they

have the least robust of nervous systems. Furthermore, the absorption of

the radiation is indicated as below:
I year old kid absorb double the amount of radiation absorption
compare to adult while 5 years old kid absorb 60% more of radiation
absorption compare to adult.
So, it is recommend that, everyone should not get the babies and the kids
to get overexposed to the mobile phones, computers, ipad, tablets and so
on.

In the new and latest development of the technology, parents are

encouraging their children to be computer experts as well as the mobile

phones experts without realizing the true hidden danger behind the
technology.

Other than that, people has to make sure that their

residential areas are not too close to the mast stations. Lodge a report
and consult with the related authority if any of the mast is built near your
residential areas.

(7)
3.4 Mobile phones abused the minds of children especially are lack of the
parental guidance.

The internet and development of cyberspace

technology lead them to the consequences of their actions where they are
online through the Internet. One of the problems is mainly about the
online pornography film watched by the kids. Based on a survey by UK
Children Go Online survey, within a group aged of 11-19 years old, 54%
say that they do not feel bothered watching the pornography films, 14%
says that it is not a proper show to be watched and hate what they saw,
20% feel that they are disgusted, 8% wished that they had never seen it,
7% say that it is interesting and good to try and other 7% say they
enjoyed it. Working parents are complaining that they dont have much
time to supervise their kids. That is wrong reasons because kids can be
lead to talk heart-to-heart especially the teenagers. Parents should spend
some of the precious hours of the weekend to be with the children. It is
suggested that lack of communication resulting the children to be Internet
experts. Activities during the weekend with the family are great ideas to
have the fun together as well as getting the closer to one another.

(8)

Closure
The special features and addition in mobile phones has their special and
unique functions.

they transformed life and working environment. It

benefits people especially is the terms of getting connected to someone

that is important and close to you.

Parents can identify where their

children are if they are coming back later.

The mobile phone release the burden at the workplace where all the data
and information needed is at the end of the fingertips.

This can save

time, energy and cost of the management because the workers need not
move from here and there or in long distance.
Through the disadvantages side, people should realize and consider about
the hazardous affect of the mobile phones.

Ones it attack our health

balance, nothing could come to place the good old days that you have
before. Think wisely as the power of choice is in your hands.
