Chapter Overview
This chapter provides a basic introduction to grounded theory
along with an invitation to the reader to learn about the
method, its roots, and its development. I begin by arguing that
grounded theory is of particular value for the social work
profession. I introduce three excellent grounded theory
studies that will be used throughout this pocket guide to
illustrate the grounded theory method, and to show how it can
be used in social work and related fields. I also provide some
historical background on the method, emphasizing its common
roots with those of the social work profession. I include an
introduction to the theory of symbolic interactionism,

because its ideas are central to both social work and grounded
theory. Finally, I introduce the basic characteristics and key
components of the grounded theory method and briefly
discuss how it has evolved since the late 1960s, including
recent developments such as constructivist and postmodern
models. Several suggested exercises follow the chapter.

Theoretical
sensitivity is
the ability of
the researcher to be analytic, that is, to see what is being
studied in theoretical terms and to go beyond the entities
themselves and to identify characteristics of these entities.
Theoretical sensitivity is based on familiarity with sociological
theories and concepts, but it is also based on personal
experience, professional experience, and temperament.
Theoretical sensitivity is something that grows over time and
is related to many years of thinking theoretically (Glaser &
Strauss, 1967, p. 46).

The Grounded
Theory Process
The
components
work together
in a
multistage
process that
builds theory.
The
researcher
first selects a
topic and
begins to
gather some
data, using
his or her
theoretical sensitivity. Then, he or she uses constant
comparison to generate concepts from the data, while
applying theoretical sensitivity to understand the concepts
and raise them to a higher conceptual level. Theoretical
sampling is used to guide the next stage of data gathering
and to further develop and verify the concepts. This process,
called the grounded theory method (GTM), continues in
multiple stages until theoretical saturation is reached (see
Figure 1.1).
Unfortunately, there are many studies in the social work
literature that describe themselves as grounded theory but
that lack most of the characteristics of grounded theory
discussed here (OConnor, Netting, & Thomas, 2008) (see
exercise #3). It is not uncommon for researchers (in social
work as well as many other fields) to borrow some of the

reason why
grounded
theory is so
valuable is
because it is a
kind of hybrid.
As described
above,
grounded
theory was
born out of the
work of a
quantitative
(positivist)
researcher
(Glaser) and a
qualitative
researcher
trained in
symbolic
interaction
theory
(Strauss). Both
mens views
changed as
they worked
together and
learned from
each other (Stern & Porr, 2011). When I examine Discovery (Glaser
& Strauss, 1967), for each statement I find that suggests that there
is a single, knowable reality, I can find another that suggests a
complex, ever-changing, constructed view of reality. For each
reference to the objective researcher, I can find another that shows
that the authors recognized that true objectivity is impossible to

1. Read each of the exemplar social work grounded
theory studies. Consider how the middle-range theories
developed in each can be used in social work practice
or education.
2. Consider a research topic that interests you. Try to
use terms and assumptions from symbolic interaction
theory to describe the topic. Can you identify human
actors? Actions? Interactions? Roles? Can you
describe the topic in terms of a self that is shaped by
interactions between the individual and his or her
social world?
