Parts of speech can be very useful in guessing

the meaning, especially if the students know lots
of affixes and grammatical endings. In English,
however, it is important to pay close attention to
where in the sentence the word appears, as in
questions 6-7 here.

ANSWER KEY

The antonym for the word in grey is improbable.

The title or heading of an article often carries clues

as to what is coming next. Anything which will help
students predict the contents of a text will make
the task of reading easier. Students should know
that this can save a lot of time in an exam situation.

Tune in to Writing (page 14)

a cat strolling casually down the garden and

into the house! I had this dream every night,
knowing that the baby crying was really a cat
and that the cat was fine.
Then, one Saturday afternoon, I was at home.
I couldnt play tennis as usual because there
was a terrible storm. Suddenly, I heard the
baby crying just like in the dream! I ran
excitedly out into the garden and went
straight to the tree. To my surprise, instead
of finding a desperate baby, I found a badly
injured cat. I tried to pick it up, but it was
scared of me and moved away. Eventually,
I managed to carry it carefully into the house.

This reviews the Writing section on pages 18-19 of

the Students Book. It further develops the skill of
writing a narrative.

Students work in pairs. They look at the pictures

and order them to make a story.

ANSWER KEY
Students own answers

Students read the story and discuss what is

similar or different about their own story.

ANSWER KEY
The correct order of the pictures is: d, c, a, b.

Tune in to Culture (page 15)

Point out the anagrams and explain that they are
all adverbs. Students solve each anagram.
Afterwards, ask the students which words the
adverbs describe (these are given in brackets in
the answer key).

This Tune in to Culture page, Idioms quiz,

introduces various idiomatic expressions. Students
need to be aware of the existence of idioms and
have strategies available for understanding them
when they appear.

Point out the rewritten first paragraph and ask

what has been changed. We often use present
tenses when we tell stories orally, to add a
feeling of immediacy to the narration. In the
paragraph here, the first part of the story has
been rewritten using past narrative tenses.

Students rewrite the rest of the story, changing

the verb forms into past narrative tenses. Explain
that the last paragraph does not need to be
rewritten as it is the present result of the past
events.

Students work in pairs to answer the questions

about idioms. Note that probably all of these
idioms will be new, so encourage students to use
the rest of the model dialogue to guess the
answers that they do not know.

ANSWER KEY
In the dream I was inside my house and there
was a terrible storm. I heard a baby crying
furiously outside. I went into the garden,
following the sound. It was raining torrentially
so it was almost impossible to see anything.
After a while, I heard the baby crying again.
The sound was coming from the bottom of
the garden. I rushed anxiously down the path.
The baby was screaming madly from behind a
tree. Slowly, I took a look immediately, the
weather changed it was warm and sunny,
and instead of a desperate baby, I found
