The Formation of the

Curriculum Research Group


In January 1983, following the Inter- Bank Seminar on Training in the Banking Industry held in August
1982, The Curriculum Research Group was appointed to organize programmes for the education and
training of members of the banking profession. The CRG comprises of members of the represented
banks and held its first meeting on March 11th 1983. This meeting was held at NIHERST Conference
Room, with the late Dr. Carol Keller of School of Education UWI as a Consultant.

The Curriculum Research Group recognizing, the Institute of Banking most important objective was the
education and training of banking professional, identified five (5) central issues.
i.
ii.

The concept and definition of the business of banking and the professional banker ;
The aims and objective of the education and training programme of the Institute of
Banking ;
iii.
The philosophy of rationale underlying the attempt to achieve these aims and objective ;
iv. The methods to be used in achieving those aims and objectives: and
v. The measurement and evaluation of the achievement of the Institutes evaluation
objective.
The Curriculum Research Group, in an effort to avoid corruption with its educational programme, took
measures to ensure that proper steps were taken with the, syllabus construction, teaching methods,
examination and assessment. The Curriculum Research Group saw its work programme as comprising
of six (6) distinct but inter-related steps or tasks.
i. Discussion and determination of the business of banking;
ii.
Development of a statement of the philosophy of banking and banking education;
iii.
Consideration of the results of the Needs Analysis Survey ;
iv.
Structuring of the educational programme and courses within the programme ;
v. Consideration of Teaching Methods ;
vi.
Consideration of Methods of Assessment.
Taking into consideration its mandate for training, the Institutes constitution enabled it to award
Associate in Banking (AIB) and Fellows in Banking (FIB) qualifications. The CRG saw the AIB
as the IBF core formal education. The AIB programme would provide adequate training for the
projected expansion
