Events like NYSD show us that there is a diverse group of teenagers with like-minded civic sensibilities,
that, even when working on separate projects, they are striving for a common goal: a better world for
everyone. Theyre the most tolerant generation weve ever seen in history, Culbertson says. They cant
imagine that somebody should be left out of any aspect of society simply because theyre black or theyre
gay or they have a disability or they come from an ethnic background thats unusual. They just dont look
at those differences as anything more than just part of what it means to be a human. They dont let those
differences get in the way of progress. Thats what makes this the greatest generation I think weve ever
seen in this country, and nobody knows it.

Volunteerism has taken hold of a young generation that is embracing every opportunity to make a
lasting difference. Youth activism levels are at all-time high. The volunteer rate among teens is almost 27
percent, while nearly three quarters of young adults say they have donated money, clothes or food to a
community or church organization over the past few years. They get involved at national and local levels,
and their numbers are growing. Doing good, not gaining recognition, is their motivation.
There is, however, a celebration for these selfless souls and their year-round achievements: National
Youth Service Day (NYSD). Actually, their contributions are so tremendous that the single largest service
event in the world needs three days April 15, 16 and 17 to place Americas young volunteer corps
aptly center stage. Some 115 national non-profit organizations and 50 other lead agencies have joined
coordinator Youth Service America in this effort to mobilize forces while showing the public at large how
this potent yet essentially untapped resource for positive change is doing great works.
Since it began in 1986, NYSD has given some 22 million young people a chance to shine. Weve seen
a huge demand from young people who want their voices heard and who feel theyve got something to
contribute to society, says Youth Service America president Steve Culbertson. And theyre not going to
wait until they grow up to do it.
Clearly. Millions of youth volunteers will be out in force again this year, from five-year-olds visiting and
decorating senior-citizen homes to high school kids tutoring peers. Distributing HIV/AIDS educational
materials, cleaning up the environment, registering voters the list of projects is almost as limitless as the
enthusiasm and energy of the people engaged in them. Making a difference in their communities and
laying a foundation for a future of civic engagement, these volunteers also learn such life skills as creating
financial budgets, planning events, raising funds, and assuming leadership roles and responsibilities.
The examples of sustained local citizenship in action have struck a chord with the corporate sponsor. Just
as the young volunteers whom NYSD honors become personally involved to improve their communities, so
too can a major company.
