Manga is the Japanese word for comic in general. Outside Japan it is used to refer to
comics of Japanese origin and to drawing style.
Japanese manga has many genres and different formats: animation series, known as
anime, or real image, movies, video games and novels. Each week or month new
magazines are published, whit heroes whose adventures follow readers for years.
The term manga was created by Hokusai Katsushika combining the kanji corresponding to
informal (man) and drawing (ga). It literally translates as "capricious drawings" or
"scribbles".
In Japanese the vignettes and pages are read from right to left, and most of the mangas
that are translated into other languages respect this order, creating a characteristic of the
manga. Another feature is the great size of the eyes of many of the personages.
In the 1980s the manga spread all over the world, thanks to films like Akira and TV series
like Dragon Ball, becoming a mass phenomenon. Conventions were created so that the
followers of the manga, called otakus, can enjoy their hobby, disguising themselves of their
favorite personages.
New technologies, especially the internet that has a lot of information easily accessible,
make the number of followers grow every day.
