Ben Burtt

''In the production of a film there's really three jobs that relate to what you
hear in the final soundtrack, three creative jobs which ultimately result in what
you hear and one of them is the production recordist, which is a person who
is recording during the actual filming of the movie, they'll have a microphone
on the set, and they will gather dialogue and some sound effects if they are
available during the actual shooting.''
Ben Burtt was the sound designer for the Star Wars movies and used
innovative ways to create many of the sounds we will forever recognise. The
lightsaber sound effect was the first sound effect he made for the film,
creating the sound by using TV interference and harmonies from an interlock
motor. He received concept paintings which allowed him to completely
visualise the sounds he wanted to create, and generate more ideas.
"The concept for the sound of Darth Vader came about from the first film,
and the script described him as some kind of a strange dark being who is in
some kind of life support system. That he was breathing strange, that maybe
you heard mechanics or motors, he might be part robot, he might be part
human, we really didn't know.'' He thought he sounded like and emergency
room, moving around.
Burtt loved films as a child and went to university in Southern California
wanting to be a film director. He received a call from the producer of Star
Wars, Gary Kurtz led to his career in the sound design for the film.
