Loyalist, 13 Feb. 2016. Web. 01 Dec. 2016.
This article starts with ancient Egyptian beauty trends. Egypt is known for their acceptance and extravagance
of beauty. Most of their trends started as adaptations that were made to the climate, labor, and status of a
person. They evolved overtime but still were used for protection, efficiency and traditions. Kohl was used by
the rich and poor. Some used it as eye protection from the sun as they worked many long hours in the sun,
and others that were more wealthy used it as a black eyeliner purely for looks. It was also used for tradition
rituals. Men and women often shaved their heads to prevent diseases and just wore wigs. Light skin was more
desirable because a tanned body showed that they worked outside for long hours which suggested they were
not wealthy. In 18th century france, round faces and double chins were popular. Larger bodies were more
desirable because of the lack of food in the country. This article suggests that body types change drastically
over the centuries and people should be confident and unique in discovering their fashion.
The article was published earlier this year, making it very current. The author is credible because she has a lot
of other related articles about similar topic . The purpose of this article was to show the evolution of beauty
starting centuries ago and how beauty trends are affected by need, location, culture, and climate .
Cosgrove, Natalie. "How and Why Has Fashion Changed over the Last 50 Years?" FashioNZ. 25 Oct. 2016.
Web. 06 Dec. 2016.
This article starts out by saying that the way that fashion changes shows how that society and culture changes.
The clothing that someone might wear could show how someone acts or what they believe. This author
suggests that world events and trends inspire clothing the change in response to what is going on. Fashion can
also show the economy and environment of a where you life. For example, countries that dont value women
have set standards that limit a woman from even showing certain parts of her body. What people are wearing
can showcase what is going on in history. For example, in the 1960, the mini skirt became very popular.
Around this time, the attitude towards female bodies changed, becoming more liberal. Around the time of
WWII, women's roles started to change, which was shown by the drastic change from1930 look, (long
sleeves, mid calf skirt and little heels for shoes) to the 1940 look (shorter skirts, short sleeved dresses, and a
higher heel on shoes).
The article was published in a couple months ago, making it very, current and up to date. The author is
credible because she has worked with fashion and clothing over the years. In my opinion, she has a good
amount of experience observing trends. The purpose of this article was to tell that clothing has the capability
to show exactly what was happening in history and that it plays a much larger role than most people think it
does.

"Decade by Decade." AboutEducation. N.p., 19 May 2014. Web. 02 Dec. 2016.

This article highlights big events in American history starting in 1900 and goes through 1955. The point of
including this article was to relate history to fashion in a time period. Some of the trends that would have

affected beauty and clothing include the following. America joined WWI around the same time Girl Scouts
was formed. A couple years later in 1919, WWI is ended. Prohibition started in the 1920s and women were
given the right to vote in 1920. The first Miss America pageant was held in 1921 and the first television was
invented in 1927. The great depression had a large effect on clothing because of the shortage of fabric and
people started to buy less clothing. The US joined WWII in 1941, and the war ended in 1945. The
introduction of the first credit card was in the 1950, and the first color television was first for sale in 1953.
These are some of the main events that I believe had an effect on clothing.
The article was published in 2014, making it fairly current. It does not need to be exactly up to date because it
is talking about past American history. The website is credible because I found a lot of different sources that
link to this one. When cross-checking the information, it all matched up. The purpose of this article was to
show American history decade by decade.
Firchua, R. J. "100 Years of Mens Fashion." The GentleManual. N.p., 02 Sept. 2015. Web. 06 Dec. 2016.
This article describes men fashion trends starting in 1900 and goes to current trends. Starting from 19001920, men usually wore a jacket, trousers, and a vest. Evening suits were usually darker and the collars on
button shirts were usually detachable. After 1920, suits started becoming slimmer and more formfitting. Bow
ties gained popularity at this time, suits were overall more slimming look. During the depression in the 1930s,
fabric was more restricted, so straighter pant legs commonly seen. Around 1940, the time of WWII, anyone
seen wearing a flashy or expensive suit was considered unpatriotic. The waistline in men's pants rose about 3
inches compared to the 1930s. Ties became wider and shorter and colorful ties were a way for men to express
themselves. In the 1950s, the fashion became much more simple. Suits, once again got rid of shoulder pads,
and shirt collars became less pronounced. Suits started to be made out of lighter material. The iconic slicked
back hair with white shirt and skinny black jeans became the image for teenagers. Around 1960, flared jeans,
flower shirts, clothes with bright colors, silk scarves velvet pants, and puffy sleeves became all the rage.
Then, around 1970, vests, pullover sweaters, and quarter button up shirts, bell bottoms, and flashy patterns
were often seen. Around 1980, activewear started to gain popularity. Matching sweatshirt and sweatpants and
bomber jackets were more casual, and men's suits were often neutral colors, and a skinny tie was commonly
seen accompanying a suit. 1990 style was not a huge contrast to 1980s style, but oversize shirts and loose
clothing were introduced.
The article was published in 2016, making it very current. The author is credible because he is considered a
male fashion expert. He has a lot of training and experience with mens clothing. The purpose of this article
was to show the evolution of suits and other male trends over the decades.
Gold, Grace. "15 Shocking Female Beauty Trends Around The World." TheTalko. 08 Feb. 2015. Web. 01 Dec.
2016.
In this article, they describe in depth many different culture trends around the world. It starts out by
explaining trends are a part of rituals, cultural traditions or done with the goal of looking and feeling
beautiful. Many of these are extreme trends, but they are still common. In Thailand, a longer neck is seen as
more desirable. Starting at a young age, girls wear brass rings around their neck, and over time they add more
coils which pushes their shoulders down, creating the illusion of a longer neck. In France, natural beauty is
considered more attractive. Some women choose only one feature to highlight and pay very little to no
attention to the others. In many East African countries, overeating is a sign of wealth. The status of women is
determined by her size: the larger the better. In Japan, skin whitening is very common. White skins is often

achieved by bleaching or whitening skin products which are very bad for the skin. Lastly, in Kenyan women
use shaved heads and stretched earlobes as a sign of age and wisdom.
The article was published in 2015, making it very current. The website is credible because they documented
as they traveled through a lot of different countries, how different people located in different places lived. The
purpose of this article was to show how different people live.
Hart, Maria. "See How Much the "Perfect" Female Body Has Changed in 100 Years." Greatist. 15 Jan. 2015.
Web. 30 Nov. 2016.
This article starts by introducing the idea that the ideal woman changes frequently. They go on to explain
the it girl through every century, starting in 1910. A small waist was achieved with a very tight, cinched, and
uncomfortable corset. Long flowing dresses, accompanied with big curled hair were very common. In the
1920s, women's ideal figure moved from hourglass (big and curvy with a small waist) to more of the
rectangle figure (straight seam lines, little hips, small chest, petite figure). Accessories, such as headbands,
headpieces, feathers, bags, long necklaces, and other sparkly jewelry were added to enhance the dresses worn.
In the 1930s, it explains the subtle return of curves. The natural waist was introduced and as well was
occasionally enhancing the shoulders. 1940 took a slight turn with more broad, boxy shoulders (called the
military shoulder because of WWII), more curves being introduced, and tall becoming more popular. In the
1950s, curves became very popular (many women bought hip padding to round out their figure) and
sweetheart necklines as well as circle skirts became very popular. In the 1960s, there was a big change
moving more towards a similar dress line to the 1920s: narrow hips, small chest, petite, rectangular figure.
Brighter colors were introduced as well as a natural waist was very common. (Women started going girdlefree which made weight loss more common in order to achieve the flat waist through dieting) In 1970, pants
were introduced for women although they were still encouraged to keep the slim, flat stomached and small
hips were still popular. In the 80s, legs were the emphasis with the explosion of aerobics and jogging.
Muscles, for the first time, were encouraged for women. In the 90s, spandex were received as a modern day
corset. Shoulder pads, slouchy jeans, and oversized sweaters were very popular. In the 2000s spray tans were
invented and became popular very fast and midriff was starting to be exposed. The article concludes by
saying that rather than chase the attributes the media is looking for, women should embrace what they have
and be confident in what they wear.
The article was published in 2015, making it very current. The website is credible because it is a very popular
website for finding current or past trends. The purpose of this article was to show how people should be
confident in what they wear no matter what the trends say they should do.
Leal, Samantha. "Surprising Beauty Trends Around the World." Marie Claire. Hearst Communications, 10
Aug. 2015. Web. 28 Nov. 2016.
Some beauty trends around the world are very different and drastic, and others are a little different, but just
change a little from the beauty trends we commonly see. This article talks about the trends between a couple
different cultures that are more similar and more commonly seen. In Brazil, it is very common to make the
lower lash line more emphasized. This can be achieved with waterproof mascara or a very thick eyeliner. In
Japan, their goal for make up is to achieve a doll-face look. A lighter face powder and a soft rosy blush is
applied to create the porcelain doll look. Skin whiteners are also used to lighten the skin giving a more
accurate doll look. In Korea, a natural look is common. They try to get the doll look as well, but they try to
achieve a more natural look. Eyeliner is used to make the eyes look bigger, and the blush more commonly

used has a orange tone instead of pink. This article shows that most cultures do have very different make up,
but they are often more related than most people think.
The article was published in 2015, making it very current. The author is credible because she actually traveled
to many different places across the globe to see different trends. Some of the trends shown are not as popular
so that could possibly throw some people off. The purpose of this article was to show that people around the
world do have very different lifestyles, but there are also a lot of similarities.
Maini, Harmainder. "The Changing Trends of Fashion." SelfGrowth. N.p., 7 May 2016. Web. 06 Dec. 2016.
The main point of this article is to show that what you wear doesnt matter as much as the confidence you
display as you wear it. This idea could possible be accountable for how style changes. If a person wears
something totally different than what is usually being worn but they have confidence, no one around them
will think they are out of style or ugly. Today, it would most likely be considered very trendy, retro, or true
hipster. The article says that style is always changing, but people do not need to limit themselves to what is
usually accepted. The author argues that not limiting ourselves to current trends is what actually sets trends.
Some of could be considered extreme trends, but they are still accepted by most people.
The article was published earlier this year, making it very current. The author is credible because he has many
years of experience working in the textile industry and with clothing. The purpose of this article was to show
that trends do not have to be set in stone.
Uku, Andrea. "A Timeline of Beauty Defined throughout the Ages." TheFashionSpot. 02 Apr. 2013. Web. 28
Nov. 2016.
In this article, they explain trends in women's fashion and beauty from the 1400's to the current trends.
Starting with the 1400s and going to the 1600s, pale skin, light hair, and the occasional bold lip color was
fairly common, and full, natural bodies and big gowns were often worn. Next, it goes on to explain the
transition into the 1800s, which was smaller and more flowy gowns. Tiny waistlines were the goal and
minimal makeup was worn. (Some religions even proclaimed beauty products to be of the devil) In the
1920s, a flat chest and flat hair was very common, and this article suggested that women were trying to
achieve a little boy look. Pale skin powder, thin but bold eyebrows, and dark eyeliner was use to create a
bolder makeup look. In the 1930s and 40s, womens style was more feminine fashion started to accent legs
and arms. In the 60s, thin was becoming more popular, and low maintenance hairstylers were more common.
Fake eyelashes and mascara became more popular at this time. In the 1970s, layered, feathered haircuts and
self tanners were a big. In the 1980s, big hair, bright clothing, and over the top make up was commonly seen.
The article goes on to describe fashion in the 1990s, which included loose clothing, flannel, denim and
miniskirts. The article concludes by describing current fashion as a combination of a lot of past trends ranging
from floral prints, low rise pants, natural makeup, and a wide variety of hair.
The article was published in 2013, so it is not super current, but because it stops after 2000, a little older
publication date is fine. The website is credible because it has a very large following with many different
views. There were no ads on the site. The purpose of this article was to show the evolution of womens
fashion over the years.

Timeline From the 1960's." AmericasBestHistory. Mar. 2015. Web. 4 Dec. 2016.

This article also highlights main events in American history, but this article starts in 1960. These are some of
the events that would have affected American fashion and beauty. The cuban missile crisis started in 9162,
and the New York Worlds Fair opened in 1964. Also in 1964, discrimination became illegal. The Vietnam
war had a very big effect on trends and how people thought of wars. The Vietnam war ended in 1975, and
during the whole war, women's trends changed drastically. The Pregnancy discrimination act passed in 1974
which made it illegal for a company to fire or deny a woman a job because she is or may become pregnant. I
think these events may seem unrelated to beauty and clothing, but I will show how they actually do directly
or indirectly affect fashion.
The article was published in 2015, making it somewhat current. The website is credible because there is a lot
of correct history events throughout the years, there are no ads, and it had no purpose other than education.
The purpose of this article was to tell the main event of American history over the years.
Trepainier, Dan. "A Brief History of Mens Fashion & Style." Articles of Style. N.p., 12 Jan. 2015. Web. 06 Dec.
2016.
This article explains mens fashion starting in the late 1800s, and goes through 1920. Starting in the
Victorian age, which ended around 1890, men usually wore tall hats, frock hats, and pocket watches. This
was a much more civilized style compared to the Georgian period which was before the Victorian age. The
Georgian style consisted of men wearing feathers, panty hoes, high heels and brighter colors. In the early
1900s, men were often seen wearing longer and leaner suits. Stiff collars often accompanied the three piece
suit. The suit always had a sack coat, with a waistcoat, and trousers. In the 20s, after WWII, people had more
money to spend on clothing, therefore button down shirts, natural-shouldered jackets, and colorful socks
became common.
The article was published in 2015, making it fairly current. The website is credible because it is linked with
large companies for mens clothing. The purpose of this article was to show how mens fashion has evolved
over the years and how the trends are related.
Westover, Abigail. "History of Costume." History of Costume.14 May 2012. Web. 28 Nov. 2016.
This article talks mostly about European fashion from the early 1400s, to the 1800s. It starts by explaining
the trend setters. Many current trends currently are sent by celebrities, actors and singers. Similar to now, in
the 1400s it was very common for the monarchs. The article shows many of the outfits of Kings and Queens
and said that Henry spent the equivalent to $3.1 Million on his wardrobe. Stuffing and puffing of shoulder,
arm, and upper legs was very common to create illusion of a larger figure. Starting in the Renaissance,
fashion started to make the switch to more colorful clothing. Feathers, jewels, beads and more were used to
make the clothing more extravagant looking. The article suggests that trends are always set by people in the
spotlight that have power, influence, and control of others. This has been true for centuries. Starting even
before the Renaissance, fashion and beauty trends were set by the monarchs. Today many of the current
trends are set by celebrities and well known actors.
The article was published in 2012 so it is a little older, but it is talking about trends from centuries ago,
therefore it does not need to be as new. The author is credible because she has no bias in this topic and she is
writing this solely to show her research of very old trends.

For example, during the Golden Ages of Greece (500 BC), it was developed into an art
form. Makeup consisted of bright red pigment presses on cheeks and lips, and white lead
powder dusted on the face for a lighter look, and kohl, a dark mineral ground to a fine powder,
was used to define and darken the eyes. In contrast, during the Victorian Age (1837-1901)
makeup and showy clothing were discouraged, promoting simple and natural industry during that
time period.
