you will need to print out the application form, sign it, and mail it along with the required

I.

Online application

1.

Do I need to register in the online application system (Move-in)?

Having finished the interview part for the first time, you have to register. This means you
create a username and a password, with this data you can login to your application(s) as
often as you like. If you want to modify your application or apply for another course at
the University of Tbingen, please login with this data!

2.

In the online application system, I am asked for school education/school leaving

certificate. What does that mean?
In general, the school leaving certificate enables you to start with a Bachelor program at a
college or university. In some countries, this is the high school diploma.

3.

The drop down menu of the courses of the University of Tbingen is mainly in
German. Could you please help me?
Neural & Behavioural Sciences = Neuro- und Verhaltenswissenschaften
Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience = Zellulre und Molekulare Neurowissenschaften
Neural Information Processing is listed in English

4.

You ask for two addresses in the online application system. What is the difference
between correspondence address and permanent address?
You should inform us at any time about your current address. In case you have been
selected for a place in one of the Masters programs, the university will send the letter of
admission by post to your correspondence address. We will arrange subject tests in
February in your home country. We therefore need to know your where about between
the 1st and the 21st of February.

5.

I have trouble with uploading documents in the upload area. It says, acceptable files
are PDF, but I am facing problems in uploading them.
If you have trouble to upload the PDF files, most likely you should use another internet
browser: Microsoft Internet Explorer Version 5.5 or higher, or Mozilla Firefox 1.04 or
higher. Please ensure that the size of the file does not exceed the size limit.

6.

On my application page there is no section for me to upload my reference letters.

As the reference letters are optional, there is no longer a special section. Please upload the
letters at the section additional documents.

7.

I have submitted my online application and now I am confused about the requested
document knowledge of German.
A proof of German language knowledge is not required! This is a mistake in the move-in
application system. You only have to give proof of your English language skills. Please
upload an empty page or again your English language proficiency certificate when you are
asked for a document proving German proficiency.

8.

Is it necessary that I present my Bachelors Diploma at the time of application?

You will have to show your Bachelors Diploma in October, for the enrolment at the
university.

9.

My school leaving certificate is written in my native language (not English or

German), and I really have a big difficulty in translating it. My BSc transcript is
written in English. Is that OK?
Both certificates have to be translated (into English or German).

10.

I'm a Chinese student, and I want to apply for the Masters program, but I can't
provide the result of APS before the application deadline. Can I provide the APS
result afterwards?
You can apply without providing an APS, but please hand it in later as soon as possible;
start the APS procedure right away! Besides, the APS certificate is essential to get your
visa.

II.

English certificates

1.

The language of instruction in my BSc course was English. Do I need a TOEFL/IELTS?

No. If your program was in English you dont need an additional English certificate. In that
case include a certification from your former university, please.

2.

Do you need my official TOEFL score sent from ETS or can I mail you a copy of my
unofficial TOEFL score?
You can upload a copy of the test results you received.

3.

I plan to take TOEFL/IELTS exam at the end of April because the exam is being held
only every two or three months in my country. Is it possible to give me a time
extension to take TOEFL/IELTS exam?
You can hand in the results after the application deadline. Please state the date of your
exam in the online application.

III. Subject test

1.

Is there any mock test that I could use to get an impression on the type of questions
asked in the test? What topics are asked for in the test?
There is no mock test available for you.
The Neural & Behavioural Science subject test asks for general background knowledge in
Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Statistics, Psychology, Cognitive Science, Brain Imaging,
Cell Biology, and General & Neurobiology. The Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience subject
test asks for general background knowledge in Chemistry, Cell Biology, General &
Neurobiology, Molecular Biology, and Biochemistry.
Style and level of the multiple choice questions are similar to the Graduate Record
Examination (GRE) Subject Test. Handbooks for this GRE subject test and common
undergraduate textbooks are therefore recommended for preparation. Free sample
questions from the GRE subject test are available on the GRE website (see Test
Preparation/Subject Tests/).
For the Neural Information Processing subject test you should be prepared very well in
Maths and Statistics.

2.

I am not able to come to Germany or even Tbingen to take part in the test. Is it
possible to organize it in my home country / near my home town?
The subject test is typically conducted in the home countries of the applicants and is
supervised by local branches of the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), Goethe
Institutes, Max Mueller Bhavan, German embassies, or scientific partners abroad. The tests
are returned to the coordination office by our partners via express mail or fax. Grading
takes several days and all participants will be informed about their results by email
thereafter.

3.

Is the subject test / the interview entirely in English?

The subject test and also the following interview will be entirely in English. You dont
need any German skills for the program.

4.

Will the date of the subject test be notified to me via email or in any other way?
You will be informed by email. Please check your account regularly.

5.

I have applied for two programs; will there be a problem in taking the subject test in
case I am invited to both of them?
If you have applied for both Neural & Behavioural Science and Cellular & Molecular
Neuroscience, you can take both tests at the same time. In case you have additionally
applied for Neural Information Processing you will be given additional time or we will try
to arrange an additional date.

IV. General questions

1.

I applied for the wrong program and the deadline has already expired. Is there any
chance that you can consider my Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience application as a
Neural & Behavioural Sciences application?
No, that is not possible.

2.

I am interested in two programs of the Graduate Training Centre. Can I apply for
both of them or do I have to decide now?
You can apply for both of them.

3.

What are the odds to get a place in one of the Masters programs?
It depends on the application situation, which differs a bit from year to year. But in
general we have approximately 8 applicants per place in the Neural & Behavioural Science
program. For the Cellular & Molecular Neuroscience program and the Neural Information
Processing program we have approximately 5 to 6 applicants per place.

ATTENTION: Once you have completed the online application form and submitted it electronically,
