I. UNPACKING
A. Shipping
Post Glover neutral grounding resistors are placed, in their normal mounting position, onto a wooden skid
and securely fastened to the skid with lag bolts. The units are then covered with plastic bubble pack material to protect the finish and to prevent dirt or moisture buildup that can occur during shipping or storage.
Where extra support is needed during shipment, banding is used inside the enclosure to support the resistor
banks. Finally, the units are crated with 2 X IO lumber. All crated resistors are clearly marked with complete shipping information, including customer marks and the shipping weight. The finished crate is easily
handled by forklift.
All crates are loaded by forklift into the enclosed van of a common carrier. At that point, it is the responsibility of the carrier to provide proper care in shipping and handling.
B. Receiving
Once received, the crated unit should be unloaded and moved by forklift. At this point, a preliminary inspection of the crate should be made to ensure that proper handling was practiced during shipment. It is
recommended that the unit remain crated until it reaches the job site to prevent possible damage during
transfer. For more on inspection procedures, see Installation & Inspection.
All crated neutral grounding resistors are suitable for prolonged storage. If the crated unit is to be stored,
it should sit horizontally (as shipped). Never store the unit on the sides or top as this could result in damage
to the bushings or insulators. Do not stack.
II. INSTALLATION
Upon arrival at the job site, uncrate the unit and remove the lag bolts which fasten it to the skid. All units
are crated securely, so care should be exercised during crate removal to prevent damage to the enclosure
or top mounted bushings.
Note: It is recommended that all packing material within the enclosure remain intact until the unit is installed.
Top mounted eye-bolts are provided for easy hoisting and placements by crane. A forklift can be used
to place the unit providing that extra precaution is taken to ensure the forks rest against the steel angles
of the enclosure and not the bottom screening.
Post Glover neutral grounding resistors can be mounted on a concrete pad or support stand near the transformer (or directly on top of the transformer if the units size and weight permit). It is important that the
grounding resistor be mounted horizontally (as shipped). This keeps the unit drip-proof, allows for adequate cooling, and prevents unnecessary strain on the support insulators. The unit should be bolted to the
mounting surface using the 5/S holes provided at the bottom of each enclosure leg. Expansion type atchars are recommended for concrete pad mounting.
Note: The enclosure should always be securely grounded to prevent a shock hazard to personnel or wildlife.

INSPECTION
After the unit has been securely mounted and grounded, remove the front panel to allow inspection and wiring.
The front panel can be identified by the POST GLOVER nameplate.
CAUTION
Remove all packing material, if any, used to protect the insulators and resistor banks during shipment.
Note:

It is important that all packing material be removed from within the enclosure before energizing. Failure to remove this material may result in fire
hazard.

With all packing material removed, carefully inspect the inside of the unit for broken insulators, bushings
and other parts that may have been damaged during shipment.
Note:

IV.

If any damaged parts are found, contact the carrier immediately. Energizingtheunit withdefectivepartsmaydamagetheresistorandcreateashock
hazard to personnel. Check all electrical connections to ensure that they are
tight.

CONNECTION
A. Neutral Lead
The neutral lead from the transformer or generator may be connected one of three ways depending upon
the specific design:
1. The connection is made directly to a top mounted entrance bushing. The bushing may have an eyebolt
connector (accepts bare cable), a copper stud connector (requires customer supplied lug) or a NEMA
two or four hold pad type connector. (See Figure 1.)
2 . The connection is made directly to the resistive element inside the enclosure via rigid conduit entering
from the bottom. The neutral terminal is tagged for easy identification. A compression type lug (that
accepts up to 410 cable) is used for terminal connection and requires a 718 wrench to tighten the lug.
Location and termination of the conduit is the customers responsibility. (See Figure 2.)
3 . The connection is made directly to the primary terminal of the current transformer which is mounted
inside the enclosure. This terminal will be tagged neutraland requires a customer supplied lug and
bolt. The other primary terminal of the current transformer has been factory wired to the resistive element. The neutral lead usually enters from the bottom through conduit. (See Figure 3.) Sometimes
the current transformer is factory wired to a top mounted entrance bushing, in which case the connection is the same as the first example above. (See Figure 4.)
In all cases, the neutral terminal is tagged for easy identification and the proper connection is shown schematically on the drawing. Check to see that all connections arefirmly tightened.

B. GROUND LEAD
The ground lead from the resistive element to ground may be connected one of two ways:
1. The connection is made directly to the resistive element inside the enclosure via rigid conduit entering
from the bottom. The ground terminal is tagged for easy identification. A compression type lug (that
accepts up to 410 cable) is used for the terminal connection and requires a 718 wrench to tighten the
lug, Location and termination of conduit is the customers responsibility. (See Figure 5.)
2 . The connection is made to top a top mounted exit bushing. The bushing may have an eyebolt connector (accepts bare cable). a copper stud connector (requires customer supplied lug) or a NEMA two
or four hold pad type connector. The bushing will be factory wired to the resistive element. (See Figure 6.)
In both cases, the ground terminal is tagged for easy identification and the proper connection is shown
schematically on the drawing. Check to see that all connections arejkmly tightened.
V. MAINTENANCE
Normally, no maintenance is necessary on a neutral grounding resistor. However, periodic inspections for
damage are needed to ensure that the resistor is still capable of protecting the system. Damage may occur from
lightning, storms, earthquakes, wildlife, overloads or extended service life. Basically, it is necessary to ensure
that the resistive element has not burned open and that the element (including the incoming bushing) is still
properly isolated from ground.
The following procedure is recommended for periodic field inspections.
1. De-energize the system being grounded and break the connection between the system neutral and the
grounding resistor. An isolation switch is sometimes available to break this connection. These precautions are recommended to prevent a shock hazard to maintenance personnel and to prevent the system
from being operated without proper grounding.
2 . Remove the front cover (which is on the same side as the nameplate) and the rear cover. This will allow
for a visual inspection of all internal components.
3 . Carefully check for cracked insulators or bushings. A meggar or Hi-Pot test is the most reliable metIod of ensuring that the porcelain insulation is still providing the necessary electrical isolation.
4 . Check the resistive element for continuity. An ohmmeter reading made between the neutral and the
ground side of the resistor should be within 10% of the nameplate value. If the resistance of the element is more than 15% off from the nameplate value, the resistors should be replaced. Any open resistors should be replaced. Complete nameplate data will be necessary to obtain replacementparts.
5. Check all internal connections for tightness. Check wiring for signs of damage from heat or overloads.
6. Check the enclosure for signs of damage from weather or rodents. Replace all side covers removed
during inspection and check the mounting bolts for tightness.
7. For replacement parts or assistance, call l-800-5374144.

I. RESISTOR
Upon receipt of equipment, check material for breakage. Make ceaain there are no broken insulators or loose
connections between units.
Set support insulators on foundation or floor and place resistor frame on the insulators. Resistors rated 600
volts, line-to-neutral, or less have no support insulators. Bolt resistor to the insulators and insulators to the
foundation. Clearance on all sides of the resistor should be not Iess than the insulator height.
Connect line and ground terminals. Terminals on resistor are l/d x 3 inch (7.4 x 76 mm) flat bus with NEMA
4 hole drilling. If standard cable terminals are provided, they will accommodate AWG #Z to 600 MCM cable,
copper or aluminum. The incoming and outgoing lines must not touch the frame and should be kept as far away
from any part of the frame as is practical. Frames rated over 600 volts have a solid copper wire connected from
the approximate mid-point of the resistor to the frame. This connection should not be removed as it serves to
limit the voltage stress on the spool insulators.
All resistors over 4160 volts, line-to-neutral consist of two ormoreframes (4160volts maximum per frame).
The frame to frame connection should be made with cable using the procedure above. If in doubt about size,
410 is normally the maximum size required.
Periodically and after each ground fault, check the resistor for broken insulators, debris, and loose connections.
SCREEN OR LOUVERED ENCLOSURES
If enclosures are supplied, they are always shipped knocked down. The outline has instructions for assembly.
The screen enclosure, if not supplied with an entrance bushing, should be cut to provide an opening for the
incoming and/or outgoing lines if necessary.
SCREEN OR LOUVERED COVERS
If covers are supplied, they are bolted directly to the resistor frame at the factory. They include two ceramic
bushings for cable entrance and exit. These covers are not grounded and so do not provide personnel protection
in themselves. For voltages of 600 and under. they can be grounded because they do not set on support insula-

tars. Bolt-on covers are not designed to support current and potential transformers, stand-off insulators or similar access&es.
STANDS

When zinc chromate plated steel stands are supplied, they are shipped knocked down. The outline has
suffcient information for assembly. These are normally furnished with mounting provision for one entrance bushing, one current transformer and one stand-off insulator.
If aluminum pipe stands are supplied, they are shipped assembled. The outljne has instructions for mounting
of options which may be supplied. If an entrance bushing is not supplied, the top screen should be cut to provide
an opening for the incoming and/of outgoing lines if necessary.
RENEWAL PARTS

Because all resistor elements in each tier are welded, individual resistor elements cannot be supplied. If aresisfor element does burn out, replacement will be on a whole tier basis only. Refer to the nearest GE Company
office giving the complete catalog number and the number of the tier from the top or bottom that the element
is in. For insulators, order by description also, giving the complete catalog number of the resistor.
If any que, stions arise which are not covered by these instructions, contact the nearest General Electric office.
