Incident 1
1. What problems had Pat not anticipated when he
took the assignment?
He did not realize how different the
communication barrier was and how the
French he learned in the United States was
completely different in Haiti.
2. How could the company have assisted Pat to
reduce the difficulties that he confronted?
The company should have told him what he
was going to get himself into and also how
their local customs, beliefs, communication,
and how they go on with their everyday life is
different from an average American.
3. Do you believe the situation that Pat confronted
is typical of an American going to a foreign
assignment? Discuss
Yes, I do believe the situation that Pat
confronted is typical of an American going to a
foreign assignment because you are going to a
country where it is new and you do not know
anything or anybody. It will take time to adjust
the way of living and how everything works in
a new country.
Incident 2
really research his location and try to bridge the gap before he even got off the
plane.
2. How could the company have assisted Pat to reduce the difficulties that he
confronted?
Pat needed to be aware of the dialect issues he might have incurred; Haiti
speaks creole, which is a mix of French and Native. There should have been a
briefing on local customs, culture, and what is considered acceptable in the
workplace and in public.
3. Do you believe the situation that Pat confronted is typical of an American
going to a foreign assignment?
You could say that this is typical of an American going to a foreign
assignment. Pat really wasnt prepared enough for Haiti, or any other country for
that matter.
Was There Enough Preparation?
1. Do you believe that Sams family is adequately prepared for the move to
Japan?
No, I dont believe that Sams family is adequately prepared for the move
to Japan. Not enough was covered, not only for Sams wife, but his children on
what all to expect, what they should and shouldnt do, nor how to be engaged
when they get to Japan.
2. Should the companys orientation program have included training for Sams
family?
Yes, the company should have had an orientation program that included
training for Sams family. They need to be able to assimilate just as Sam does. Itll
help them learn more about the culture, location, and customs of Japan.
3. Is repatriation orientation and training necessary for Sams family on their
return to the United States?
Yes, repatriation orientation and training is necessary for Sams family on
their return to the states. Though its great for Sam to get all that he needs, his
family is moving their entire lives and adapting to this new culture. They cannot
be expected to just assimilate without help coming back to America. Having this
transition will make it easier on the entire family.
