Opera: Le Nozze Di Figaro
Composer: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
Le Nozze Di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro) is an opera buffa composed by
Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart in 1786. The opera continues the plot of Mozarts The
Barber of Seville wherein after a few years, the Count Almaviva has already
seemingly lost his love for the Countess (Rosina) and is now trying to woo Susanna,
the Countess servant and future wife of Figaro. Through the scheming of the
Countess, Susanna, and Figaro, the Count regains his love for the Countess
Almaviva.

Opera: Porgy and Bess
Composer: George Gershwin
Referring to it as a folk opera, Porgy and Bess is an English opera composed in
1934 by George Gershwin. Premiered in 1935 in New York City, the opera featured
an all-African American cast of classical singers.
Porgy and Bess tells the story of Porgy, a disabled beggar, who tries his best to
help Porgy break free from the clutches of her lover, Crown, and the drug dealer,
Sportin Life.

Les Contes DHoffman (The Tales of Hoffman) is an opera fantastique in three
acts composed by Jacques Offenbach. The opera tells of the story of Hoffman and
his tales of love for three women: Olympia (a mechanical doll), Antonia (a young
girl), and Giulietta (a courtesan).
Elle a fui, la tourterelle! is sung by Antonia in the second act. She refers here
to Hoffman as her turtledove who has flown away. Antonia is afflicted by a
sickness. She has inherited her mothers voice. However, singing will cause her
death. In the end, she chose a life of passion than a life not lived.

Always Through The Changing
Opera: The Ballad of Baby Doe
Composer: Douglas Moore
Premiered in the Central City Opera in Colorado in 1956, The Ballad of Baby
Doe is Moores most loved and frequently staged English opera. Based on the lives
of Horace Tabor, Augusta Tabor, and Elizabeth Baby Doe Tabor, the opera retells
the story of the Matchless Mine and the scandal that rocked Leadville, Colorado
when Horace decided to divorce Augusta in order to marry Baby Doe.
Dearest Mama (The Letter Aria) was sung by Baby Doe while writing a letter to
her Mother, telling her that her marriage with Harvey Doe was over but that she has
found love in Horace Tabor, who was still married to Augusta. In spite of the odds,
Horace was able to divorce Augusta. Baby Doe and Horace were married in a lavish
ceremony in Colorado.
Thirty years later, silver was losing its value and Horace and Baby Doe found
themselves living in abject poverty and selling their properties, including an opera
theater. However, Horace kept the Matchless Mine where Baby Doe lived out the
rest of her life in poverty until her death. Always Through The Changing was the
last aria in the opera sung by Baby Doe as Horace lays dying in her arms.

What Will It Be For Me?
Opera: Regina
Composer: Marc Blitzstein
The opera was set in the 1900s in the Deep South. Regina Giddens, along
with her brothers, devises plans to obtain more money. When her husband Horace
vocally expressed his disapproval of her plans, she denied him his heart medication
which subsequently led to his death. Reginas daughter, Alexandra, discovers the
real cause of her fathers death and decides to leave Regina. Regina dies wealthy
but alone.
