When Member of the Legislative Assembly

Derek Fildebrandt looks back on 2016, he
sees it as a successful year.
Since taking office in 2015, Fildebrandt
has always made a constructive effort to get
his corner of the province recognized by the
NDP in Edmonton.
The biggest accomplishment that I saw
last year was getting the necessary funding
for the upgrades needed at the Strathmore
Hospital, said Fildebrandt. It was promised
for over a decade and went on without action
for too long.
Back in July, more than $2.8 million was
awarded to the hospital for upgrades to expand the emergency department, increase the
number of treatment spaces and improve other patient care areas. The hospital has the second busiest emergency room in rural Alberta.
It was very badly needed, added Fildebrandt.
Along with helping out the hospital, Fildebrandt is also proud of keeping pressure to repeal Bill 6, a bill that would impact farmers
and ranchers in the province.
We kept the pressure up on Bill 6, working with everyday farmers and ranchers in the
conversation on the regulations of the Bill and
the ones that still havent been proclaimed,
said Fildebrandt. Bill 6 still hasnt come into
effect, which I think is a positive thing. We
are committed to repeal Bill 6 even after the
next election and replace it with something a
little bit more reasonable
Transitioning into the New Year, Fildebrandt claims to repeal legislation of carbon
tax and the NDP heavy-handed attack on the
provinces oil and gas industry.
Seeing the NDP planning to take on $14
billion in new debt this year came as a shock
to the Shadow Finance Minister. He intends
to keep an eye on the oil and gas industry; he
also plans to undo the NDP agenda moving
forward.
Most of the finance issues tend to have a
relatively equal application across the province, said Fildebrandt. Every single constituency benefits from a balanced budget, getting
taxes back to a reasonable level and getting
spending under control.
Heading into his third year in office, the job
hasnt been quite as expected for the native
of Ottawa.

Local artist publishes adult colouring book

ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter

Six years ago, at her first zentangle
class, Patricia Timmermans couldnt
have guessed that in a few years she
would become an accomplished artist and have a published book that
would be aptly named Serenity, Adult
Colouring.
Her book is aptly named because
serenity is the exact energy Patricia
Timmermans emanates.
I took my first zentangle class in
2011 with Hope Bridges, it really
caught my attention, said Timmermans. The drawing techniques that
they showed us were small and intricate and detailed, but not difficult.
Once I went to a few classes and
created a few pieces I realized that I
could do it.
For most people who know Timmermans or have heard her story, this
is nothing short of impressive.
Timmermans was diagnosed at a
young age with retinitis pigmentosa
(RP), which means that the rods and
cones of her retina are dying. The
condition usually starts with the loss
of night vision, which for Timmermans happened when she was about
10 years old, followed by the loss of
peripheral vision until it leaves you
completely blind.
There is no cure, but there is a lot of
research being done.
Personally Im very fortunate that
its been a very slow progression for
me, said Timmermans who is now
60, adding that some people can go
completely blind within months of
their diagnosis.
Timmermans stated that she has
often struggled with sadness at the
thought of her condition, but that she
doesnt let it keep her down for long.
Life is too short, she said. Ive always been interested in art and I have
the art and music kind of mind and
gift. Im drawn to it.
After the zentangle classes and
watching countless videos and tutorials on YouTube of how to draw, Timmermans fell in love with drawing
and would soon find herself drawing
away entire afternoons and not realizing what time it was when she finally
looked up from the paper.
Every new thing I try I tend to
think that I only have so long to learn
it (because of my eye condition), so
I have to give it my all. I only have
around five years of sight left; then I
wont be able to draw anymore, so I
get seriously into it and just dive in

and learn what I can, said Timmermans, who enjoys creating a variety
of images including detail drawings,
3D, animals and nature, and colouring book style based from her original
zentangle courses.
After she posted a small detail colouring book style drawing on her
Facebook page, Timmermans received
overwhelming positive support from
family and friends stating they would
love to colour the page and that she
should make a colouring book for
adults.
The positive responses from friends
really got me thinking about making a
colouring book, she noted.
Timmermans took no time in creating 30 different drawings with content
ranging from scenes, nature, details
and mandalas. She approached a publishing company to create her book.
After several meetings and negotiations, it was decided she needed some
more images to create a full book.
I love creating a variety of images.
I dont care how long it takes to create an image I will just work at it,
she said.
I drew some more drawings and as
I got better I would scrap some of the
first 30 drawings and add new ones
to it, said Timmermans, who after a
years time created a beautiful colouring book with 46 unique sketches in
it. Im really, really pleased with the
final product.
The book was published in November 2016 by Friesen Press and is available in a soft or hard shell copy on
Amazon, Indigo and Chapters, Barns
and Noble, or directly from Timmermans (contact information is on her
website at luv2draw.com), and ranges
between $15-$28.
Timmermans will be receiving, at
no cost to her, a seeing eye dog and
a licence to keep the dog with her
wherever she goes, sometime in the
first half of this year from Dogs with
Wings. To give back to the non-profit
organization that will be providing
her with a companion and a form of
sight, 20 per cent of all proceeds from
the purchase of her colouring book,
Serenity, Adult Colouring, will go directly to the organization.
The most important reason for
making the book and donating and
just doing this is to encourage other
people who may suffer from the same
eye condition or another disability or
challenge; to do something that lets
you feel accomplished and takes your
mind off it. Give back somehow, do
something that is a little bigger than

which has 46 hand drawn pictures to colour depicting scenes, detailed drawings, and mandalas.

your disability because no matter

what it is, youre bigger than it, said
Timmermans, who is already looking
at starting a new colouring book but
isnt quite sure what it will look like
yet.
Other plans include learning to play
music, which she is well on her way
to doing as she has received a keyboard this past Christmas and has already learned to read music.
I want people to know me for who
I am. And while my vision loss is a
part of me, it does not define me, she
said.

Paint and Refresh at Meadowlark

ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter

Hope Bridges is coming back into full swing this
New Year with a variety of classes scheduled.
The most recent class held was a Paint and Refresh class that took place at the Meadowlark Seniors Care Facility on Jan. 4.
The class, solely comprised of residents of the
care facility, was a two-hour long painting session
during which the students painted the silhouette
of an owl sitting on the branches of a tree against
a blue sky.
Hope Bridges offers a few of these painting classes each month; the first at Parent Link on every
second Thursday of every month, and this one at
Meadowlark on the first Wednesday of every month
from 1 to 3 p.m.
The Meadowlark class is particularly interesting
because all the residents of Meadowlark have dementia.
All the patients here have dementia so it is quite
an accomplishment for them to do this. Sometimes
they dont even remember doing this the next
day, said Debbie Wakelam, owner and operator of
Meadowlark Seniors Care Facility.
Wakelam is already seeing the benefit of bringing art into the facility by partnering with Hope
Bridges.
For individuals living with dementia, often it is
very hard for them to verbally express themselves,
she said. Its surprising how incredible some of

the residents are with painting; they become totally

engrossed in it.
Although this class is held in a care facility, anyone is welcome to join in on the class.
It is an open event (and) anyone is encouraged
to come and participate, noted Wakelam. It is
held here because it is convenient for us and for
residents in wheel chairs, but that doesnt mean
someone who wanted to come, couldnt. It would
be great to get some younger people in to mix with
our seniors.
There is a new painting every month and there
are different levels of expertise: beginner, intermediate and advanced. The paintings are walked
through step-by-step.
There is no right or wrong when creating these
paintings. No one is judging you. You can do it how
you want and just have fun, said Melinda PhillipsOslund, the artist and facilitator of Hope Bridges
Paint and Refresh days.
Painting classes arent the only thing Hope Bridges has going on this year; they are also offering a
Drum fit and drumming class on Jan. 26 from 1 to
3 p.m. at the Hope Church Youth Room for $25.
Drum fit is a class that can be done standing or
sitting and it involves movement to music while
drumming on exercise balls, and will be combined
in a two-hour class with drumming on the balls.
Other classes offered include Go Green Upcycling, Sing Your High Note and Hand Built Pottery.
Please visit hopebridges.ca to view the classes and
to sign up.

Private Members Motion M-108

MARTIN SHIELDS
Member of Parliament Bow River Riding

Happy New Year and best wishes for a prosperous and healthy 2017.
The past year has been an economic challenge
for some, especially in the resource and ranching
sector. Lets hope for a better 2017.
A big upcoming project that I am working on is
a Private Members Motion that I expect to introduce later this year.
The text of the Motion, called M-108, is as follows: That, in the opinion of the House, the government should recognize that the ongoing contribution of ranchers and farmers as stewards of
the land and conservationists is part of our history, proudly shared by all Canadians, and should
consider establishing policies which would support and encourage the development of private
farm and ranch land conservation and restoration
projects.
M-108 is an important way for the Parliament of
Canada to recognize the role that our hardworking ranch and farm families work every day to
ensure that environmental preservation is always
a number one priority.
I believe it is important to share with all Canadians this important fact. Environmental stew-

ardship is critical to our ranch and farm families.

Without a healthy and strong environment, farms
and ranches would simply disappear. Its in the
best interest of ranchers and farmers to ensure
that they are doing their best to be good stewards
of the land they depend on for their livelihoods.
I have also been trying to emphasize this fact
as a member of the House of Commons Standing Committee on Environment and Sustainable
Development. Ranchers and farmers play an important role in environmental protection, and I
believe that as we try and find better and more
effective ways to protect our environment, we will
need to rely on the expertise of ranch and farm
families to help us find solutions.
I will be working in the months ahead to seek
support from MPs from all parties, as well as Canadians in every province and territory for this
important motion. I invite you to share with your
family and friends, and to contact my office with
any questions or comments that you may have.
My designated staff working on this project is
my legislative assistant, Andrew Poncia. He can be
reached at 613-992-0761 or martin.shields@parl.
gc.ca. I will also be posting updates on my website regarding M-108, so feel free to check back in
the future (martinshieldbowriver.ca).

A few of the Legions crazy dart players drove to Legion #1 in Calgary on the
7th, on the winter highway. I will let you know how well they did or did not do,
in the next issue of the Times.
The 2017 Executive were officially installed on the 6th. Comrade Doug
Earnshaw is the Sgt.-at-Arms; Comrade Hap Hanson is the Branch Service

the next issue or two of the Times.
It is also my pleasure to announce that I am the new Poppy Chair. Any requests for bursaries for continued education for the children/grand-children of
Veterans who are members of our Legion should be directed to my attention for

at the Branch and follow the instructions contained thereon. Failure to comply
will result in a delay of the bursary approval procedure.
All events at the Branch: Darts, Bingo, Crib, The Kitchen, etc., are all set to

Cancer detecting canines

ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter

Service dogs and bio-detection dogs are commonly used throughout Alberta and Canada, and
around the world.
But there is one process that isnt as commonly
used with dogs, and Langdon resident Liz Dick
hopes to change that.
There are many bio-detection dogs that can
detect epilepsy or diabetes, but I am looking specifically to train dogs to detect cancer, said Dick,
who throughout her life has trained her own, her
familys and her friends dogs.
Although controversial as to its effectiveness
and validity, cancer detection done by mans best
friend has been around since the 1990s. Several research facilities and working centres exist
across the world, one of them being the In Situ
Foundation in California which has been operating as a canine cancer detection facility in partnership with surrounding universities, hospitals and
cancer clinics.
The In Situ Foundation (dogsdetectcancer.org)
has trained over 50 dogs in the past 12 years to
detect cancer, and as of October 2016, is now offering classes to eight people a month who want
to learn how to train dogs to detect cancer. One of
these people is Dick, who will be taking the sixday course in February.
There are a few clinics all over the world that
train dogs to detect cancer, but this is the only one
that teaches people how to train the dogs, said
Dick. They only accept students who have dog
training experience, or they will accept doctors,
oncologists and nurses because they are in the
profession. This will teach me everything I need
to know to train a dog and get partnerships in
place and a clinic set up. There are only a handful of people in the whole world who have this
certification.
Unsure how a dog can detect cancer? The answer is through scent detection. Canines can smell
in parts-per-trillion, making a dogs sense of smell
approximately 100,000 times more accurate than
a humans. Using scent training has already proven effective through such practices as searching
for narcotics or bombs, and alerting people when
they are about to have a seizure or go into diabetic shock.
The In Situ Foundation found they could train
the dogs to detect cancer using scent training on
cancer samples, healthy control samples and dis-

ease control samples. A dog smells a breath sample, or a urine or saliva sample from humans, and
is positively reinforced if it is correct when it alerts
you that its found a cancer sample. Over time, the
odour of cancer is generalized to the medical
scent detection dog. They have been found to detect some types of cancers with an accuracy rate
of 98 per cent.
It takes about 300 breath samples to train a
medical scent detection dog, and so far, it has
been found that dogs can detect the very early
stages of prostate, breast, upper thoracic, melanoma, lung, ovarian and bladder cancers.
Once Dick returns from the course, she will begin working on setting up a viable foundation and
business.
I have a lot of questions that I still need answered. But this is what I want to do, Im committed and Im going to make this work, said Dick.
At the age of 55 Ive finally figured out what I
want to be when I grow up. Now Im going to use
the second half of my life, my next 55 years, to
work on this.
Dick has been researching this form of cancer
detection for over a year, but it wasnt until last
August that Dicks passion spurted, unfortunately
due to the death of her mother.
My mother died of cancer this past August. After that I knew I had to take my knowledge of
canine scent detection to the next level and apply
it to cancer detection, said Dick.
This will be a long process. I need to get partnerships put in place and get a facility where I
can do this, she added. Then it will take six to
18 months to train each dog using breath samples. After that I will be able to start working with
doctors and hospitals to give real results to real
people.
Dick plans on starting a GoFundMe page after
she gets a plan in place in the hopes people will
see the benefit of her research and would like to
help donate so she can get a centre up and running.
I want people to contact me and ask questions
after I take the course in February so that I can
tell them what Im doing, said Dick, who can be
reached by e-mail at liz.dick212@gmail.com.
If through all the months and months of training, and even all the expense this research will
incur, if just one persons life could be saved because I made the effort to train the dogs to specifically detect cancer cells, it will all be worth it,
she added.

REMEMBERING OUR ROOTS

JOHN GODSMAN
Times Contributor
The Sauve family has been traced
back to France and the first Sauve, a
soldier, arrived in Lachine, Que. in approximately 1663. The family eventually moved to Gentilly, Minn., where
Kens grandfather owned a hardware
store.
Kens father, Achille, arrived in the
Gleichen area in 1920 to visit his sister, Del Menard, and to assist in the
building of a house for her and her
family. He decided to stay, and did
carpentry work in the area until 1931,
when he purchased land and operated a mixed farm. That year he married
Myrtle Cunningham, who had moved
to Gleichen from Minnesota with her
family in 1918. They had five sons, of
which Ken Sauve was the last one,
born in 1944. They lived on the farm
through 1965, when they moved into
Gleichen.
Ken attended school in Gleichen
from Grades 1-8, then moved to Cluny
for Grades 9-11, before attending Olds
Agricultural College for two years. He
then returned to farm Tareyton Farms
with his brother Harvey after their dad
retired in 1963.
Ken and Judy met while he was attending Olds College. Judys sister
Mary Ann was a fellow student at
Olds, and introduced them.
They were married in 1965, and
raised three sons: Todd Joseph, born
in 1966, Michael James, born in 1968,
and Jason Kenneth, born in 1971.
Ken and Harvey operated a mixed
farm with purebred Herefords until 1981 when they decided to divide
the land and cattle. Kens portion became Ken and Judy Sauve Herefords
where they grain farmed and raised
registered Horned Herefords.
Judys father, Joseph Cummins, was
born in Ireland in 1901, and came to Al-

to Canada in 1926. Judy grew up on a
farm west of Carstairs, and was raised
along with her siblings by her Uncle
Roy and Aunt Anna Cam-eron. She attended a one-room school called Banner, which was west of Carstairs, until
Grade 6, then completed her schooling
in Carstairs. Follow-ing her graduation
at Grade 12, she was employed at the
main branch
of the Royal Bank of

she married

Kens activities have included coaching hockey

of the Bow North Gas Co-Op, director
of Wheatland Surface Rights Group,
director of Crowfoot Creek Watershed Group, president of the Central
Alberta Hockey League for two years,
and councillor for Wheat-land County
for nine years. Judy helped set up the

on the arena board, was a member of
the Gleichen Communi-ties in Bloom

A quote in the article Martin Shields excited for 2017 in the Jan. 6 edition of the

Ken and Judy feel their lives are
indeed blessed, as they get to spend
very happy times with all their children and grandchildren.
Some of the biggest changes theyve
seen in this area over the past 50 years
is the decline of small towns and villages. Many places have com-pletely
disappeared, with not even a marker
showing where they had once stood.
The new technology available in agriculture with GPS-guided equipment

Shavasana at Gleichen Library

ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter
Any ladies, flexible or otherwise, are
invited to participate in a self-directed
morning yoga session on Thursdays at
the Gleichen Library.
We dont have an instructor and we
are mostly mature women, so we start
with breathing, move on to some gentle isometrics for toning and stretching, and then do a few yoga moves
just to say we did, said Trish McLeod,
manager of the Gleichen and District
Library.
The class was an idea to have a ladies workout option available to local
women interested in stretching and
getting in shape as there are many
other fitness destinations in town.
None of us are super bendy. We
like to finish up with shavasana, at
which we excel, said McLeod. It is in
the library on Thursday mornings at
10:30 a.m. sharp. I lock the door then,
so dont be late.
Those who are interested in participating in the class may call McLeod
for more information at 403-734-2390.
The Gleichen Library hours are
Tuesday and Thursday from noon to 6
p.m. and Friday from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Membership fees are $5 for children

age 12 and under, $10 for a single person and $15 for a family membership.
There are computers for use for
members and non-members (preference is given to library members) and
free Wi-Fi for customers own devices.
Printing and outgoing fax services are
also available.
On Tuesday nights from 4 to 6 p.m.
and on flex Fridays, the library hosts
Tween and Teen Game Night. Kids
can play games or cards, or just hang
out in the Library.
The library is accepting book donations for 5 for Life, an early childhood development coalition that promotes positive early development in
children. Those interested can donate
books into the book drop-off bin in
the library.
Interested in having your child participate in a pre-school reading period
for half an hour once a week? The library is looking for interested people
to call the library at 403-734-2390 so
that a program can be set up. With
enough interest, the 30-minute program will include a story, a small craft
related to the story, juice and a cookie.
For more programming or general information on the Gleichen and
District Library, feel free to visit their

New Tim Hortons for Strathmore

ADELLE ELLIS
Times Reporter

A new Tim Hortons restaurant is opening at the
end of the month at 245 Edgefield Place, just north
of Calgary Co-op.
The franchise sandwich and coffee shop will be
the third location open in Strathmore. It will be officially open as of 6 a.m. on Jan. 30.
Most of the new development is on this east
end of town, said owner and operator Kevin Korpi. There is a new school and recreation centre
being built as well as the new commercial and
residential development, so this is where the new
location needs to be.
Korpi and his wife, Tracy Korpi, have been in
this business for three and a half years. This is their
third Tim Hortons location; they also own the Pine
Road location and another location in Langdon.
This will steal some business from our Pine
Road location, there is no doubt about that. But
because it will be more convenient to get to, it will
attract new customers as well. Its a great location,
it wont be as congested, said Korpi. A big part
is convenience and speed of service. If you can
go through the drive through and get out of here
within three minutes with a coffee in hand, then
people are more inclined to visit.
According to Tracy Korpi, the Pine Road location
is busting at the seams.
She added that by having a restaurant along
westbound highway lanes as opposed to the eastbound highway lanes, people wont have to cross
the TransCanada Highway and leave the residential zones to grab lunch or a coffee.
The 2,500 sq. ft. building can hold up to 40 customers, and it features a newer design and features typical to that of newly designed Tim Hor-

tons shops.
Along with a full menu and single lane drive
through, the most unique design of the building
is the theatre baking station. This is a counter
space visible for customers to watch the baking
process and see the donuts getting made, filled
and dipped.
The whole idea of it is the back area that customers cant see is very small. Everything is up
front so you can see everything that is going on,
said Korpi. Its kind of like a theatre show.
The new Tim Hortons location is also creating
jobs in the Town of Strathmore as 40 people have
already been hired to work in the new location. It
is also presenting the opportunity for employees
to be promoted within the company: the new manager for the Edgefield location has been promoted
from assistant manager at the Pine Road location,
and the new assistant manager at Edgefield has
been promoted from a supervisor at Pine Road.
There are still a few part time positions left to be
filled; apply in-store at the Pine Road Tim Hortons.
Along with providing a desired service and jobs
to the residents of Strathmore, having a third Tim
Hortons restaurant will provide the opportunity
for two more kids to go to Tim Hortons Childrens
Camp every year.
Every restaurant location sends two kids to
camp every year. So by opening this location it
means that six kids from Strathmore will get to
go to childrens camp every year, and thats really
good, said Korpi.
We are excited to be here. The town has been
so supportive of our business. Its been a good run
for us and we are excited to be expanding and to
be providing another 40 jobs and to be promoting
employees who have been with us for a while, he
added.

Fizer figures
in road win
TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter

Tarun Fizer wasted no time in proving why he was named
the Foothills CFR Chemicals Bisons player of the month for
December.
In what was a rematch from a thrilling Macs AAA Midget
Hockey Tournament quarterfinal, the Bisons dumped the
Calgary Royals 5-1 in Alberta Midget Hockey League action
Jan. 8 at Stu Peppard Arena.
Brandon Machado entered the offensive zone flanked with
captain Brett Trentham on a two-on-one. Driving to the net,
Machado deked, shot, and his rebound kicked out to the
trailing Fizer, who chipped in the opening goal 2:10 into the
game.
Tarun is a super explosive guy and a very quick thinker,
said Bisons head coach Sandy Henry. He tracks the play
well, knows where the pucks are going to pop out and
jumps on them. And on top of all that, he possesses a very
solid shot.
Always a fast-paced game when these two teams square
off, the Bisons led 1-0 after the first and 18-8 in shots.
In the second, grinder Kaden Hanas won a battle in the
Royals zone, walked out front and tried to jam the puck
home. The rebound squirted to a pinching Landon Melzer,
who stabbed at the puck, floating it over Samuel Burford.
Now healthy from a lower-body injury, the Bisons (19-3-3)
are reaping the rewards of the clean-shaven Canmore product.
It was very frustrating trying to come back from an injury
like that, said Melzer. It would feel good one day, and then
the next day I would take a misstep and tweak it again. It
was hard to tell when it was good to go.
In the second, Melzer stapled his man to the boards, turned
around to retrieve the puck and was sent flying by one of the
Royals (14-6-4) forwards.
He came back to the bench after that hit and said, Now
Im having fun! Thats just the type of kid he is: big, strong,
moves the puck well and has more skill than you might
think, said Henry.
The Bisons opened up the game in the second when Cole
Clayton wristed a high shot from the point. He collected his
own rebound through a maze of legs and buried his third of
the season.
Lost from the score sheet in the second was Fizer undressing Pickles to the backhand and roofing his would-be second goal of the game. Pickles bit so hard on the fake, he slid
back into the net, dislodging it from its moorings milliseconds before Fizer fired the puck into the net. No goal.
When you get a goal like that called back, you really want
another one and kind of get that one back, said the Victoria
Cougars prospect Fizer.
Later in the third, he picked off a dee-to-dee pass from
Sam Atkinson to Eric Gilholme deep in Royals territory. In
alone, Fizer went back to the well and used the same move
to render Pickles useless. This time, the net stayed on.
Joel Krahenbil put the game on ice when he shoveled in a

rebound off a Clayton drive attempt.

The Bisons other netminder, Ben Laidlaw, has
been between the pipes for the first two matchups
with the Royals. This time, Hunter Young got his
crack at the Royals.
Young was coming off his least impressive outing of the season, when he allowed four goals to
the Moose Jaw Generals in a mean-nothing game
in the Macs.
Refreshed from the post-Macs break, Young
was razor sharp in the blue ice.
Early, he was quick on the recovery, adjusting to
save deflected shots. In the third, his teammates
took four penalties and the Royals sent waves of
troops crashing towards the net. Twice on one
penalty kill, Young emerged from a pile of bodies
at the whistle, holding the puck.
I was really helped out by my defence today;
[Tyson] Terretta bailed me out and Cayde [Augustine] bailed me out, said Young. It was a little
hectic in there at times, guys are going to try and
get in your head, you just have to stay focused on
the next play.
Young now sits with a 7-2-1 record to go with
a splendid 1.73 goals against average and a .938
save percentage.
That was a huge game by Hunter, said Henry.
I thought he really responded in a pressure game,
little bit of tightness in the standings, playing in a

The Bisons are one of four teams without a
shutout this season. The dream of picking up their
first blank slate came to an end when Connor
Minchin blasted home his second of the season
off a faceoff win to the left of Young with 5:54 to
go in the third.
Honestly, I was pissed when that goal went
in. I really wanted Hunter to get the shutout. I
thought he deserved it, said Henry.
The Bisons were without Blake Wells, Tyler
Strath and Liam Belcourt. Strath came down with
the flu and Wells is still recovering from an upper-body injury sustained in the Macs. Belcourt is
playing with Tri-City Americans of the WHL during their Saskatchewan road swing. He will have
played in six games by the time the trip wraps up
on Jan. 14. Playing in place of the missing Bisons
were Ryan Ries (Airdrie Lightning midget AA) and
Travis Kelton (Wheatland Chiefs midget AA).
Next for the Bisons is a pair of home games.
First, they welcome the Calgary Flames (15-81) Jan. 13 to the Strathmore Family Centre, with
puck drop at 8 p.m. Two days later, on the 15th,
the Red Deer Optimist Chiefs (14-4-7) stroll into
town, with puck drop at 2 p.m.
The Bisons defeated the Flames 7-2 Oct. 30, and
tied the Chiefs 2-2 Oct. 28 and clipped them 5-2
in the Macs.

Central Alberta Hockey League with

a 12-game winning streak stretching
from the end of October to mid December, teams like the Taber Golden
Suns (8-9-6) are going to get a little
more fired up when they take on the
division-leading Chiefs (19-2-2).
Thats exactly what happened Jan. 7
at the Taber Community Centre, when
the local double-A midget team and
Golden Suns skated to a 3-3 tie.
I thought Taber played well, said
Chiefs assistant coach Matt Gass. We
came out as I expected us to come
out after the holiday break. It took a
little bit for us to get into the flow of
things again.
Zachary Suntjens sniped the Chiefs
first goal of 2017 at the 9:47 mark
in the opening frame from Riley Romashenko and Adrian Kusu.
Romashenko added an unassisted marker on the power play in the
second period, but the Golden Suns
matched the Chiefs with a pair of
snipes.
Were at that point of the season
now where teams are game planning
for us, said Gass. They get their No.
1 goalie in. Taber had a system in
place and they executed it.
The Suns broke the tie midway through the third when Zach
Trempner found the back of the net.
With just over six minutes remaining, the leagues leading scorer and
Whitecourt Wolverines prospect Isaac
Benoit took over.
Playing with Kale Clouston for the
first time this season, the two were
clicking early and finally got rewarded
when the Chiefs needed it the most.
Clouston made a great pass up to
Romashenko, who found Benoit and

Reliable

let him take care of the rest. Benoit

leads the league with 25 goals, 18 assists and 43 points. Ty Tarvyd made
33 saves in net to preserve the tie.
In a road-heavy January, the Chiefs
are in action again Jan. 13 when they
travel to take on the Bow Valley Timberwolves (9-8-4) at the Cochrane
Arena. Their next home game goes
Jan. 21 when they host the Red Deer
CanPro (7-10-4) at the Strathmore
Family Centre.
BRAVES FALTER
The warm holiday cheer was nowhere to be found in the Wheatland
Braves locker room following their
4-2 loss to the Airdrie Lightning (6-152) White Jan. 6 at Hussar Arena.
For both teams, it was their first
game back from the holiday break,
and the effort portrayed by the Braves
is starting to grow old with their
bench boss.
For four months now, we have
been trying to get these guys to buy
into working hard and it hasnt happened, said Braves head coach Keith
Klemmensen. From now on, guys are
going to have to earn their ice time. If
youre not willing to put in the effort
then you arent going to play.
The local double-A peewee team
(5-14-2) recieved goals from Nolan
Mahussier and a powerplay tally from
Cole Whelan. Adam Moore, Garrin
Gosling and Mahussier picked up assists.
Rhett Harten started in net for the
Braves. He stopped 18 of 22 shots.
Up next for the Braves sees them
take on the Okotoks Oilers Black (512-2) Jan. 14 at the Murray Arena.
They return home Jan. 22 when they

(1-17-4) to the Strathmore Family
Centre.
WARRIORS LOSE 3-1
The Wheatland Warriors got off to a
slow start this season, going 2-6-2 in
their first 10 games.
In the 10 games leading up to the
holiday break, the local double-A bantam team was playing better, going
5-5 in that stretch.
At the time, head coach Cody Brown
was apprehensive about the holiday
break, not wanting to take a break
having seen his team turn a page in
their progress.
In the Warriors (8-12-2) first game
back, they fell 3-1 to the Olds Grizzlys
at the Olds and District Sports Complex.
Scoreless after the opening frame,
the Grizzlys (12-6-1) popped two past
Logan Grant in the second.
Logan stood on his head for us,
said assistant coach Brandon Neufeld.
We got out to a slow start, and if it
wasnt for him, then we would have
lost by a lot more.
Grant finished with 34 saves.
Adam Kirkpatrick cut the lead in
half when he sniped his ninth from
Zach Stangness with 3:33 remaining
in the frame.
The Warriors tried to claw back in
the third, but were forced to pull the
goalie with a minute remaining. Thats
when Jordan Saunders picked up the
empty net marker, icing the Warriors.
The Warriors will look to bounce
back against the very same Grizzlys
Jan. 15 when the two meet up at the
Strathmore Family Centre. Puck drop
is set for 4:15 p.m.

Kelly keeps Cubs at bay

Kings flawless penalty kill finally bent.
After killing eight-straight power play chances,
the Cubs tied it on the five-on-three at the 14:25
mark when captain Keegan Bartram tipped in a
point shot from Alex Engel.
A scoreless overtime saw the two teams head
to a shootout, which hasnt been too kind to either team this season. The Kings were 0-2 and the
Cubs were 0-3 in the skills competition.
Shooting first, Stahl came down the ice, deked
wide and deposited it into the open net.
Kings captain Keenan Ogle came down and
sniped a low blocker.
After two more saves by Kelly, second-year
forward Zachary Meadows ended it with a goal
reminiscent to Ogles.
I came in and I thought the five-hole was going to be there. But as I got closer to the net, I
could see the whole right side open, said Meadows.
Hoover was injured against the No. 2 ranked
Heritage Junior Hockey League team and perpetual Kings bully, the Cochrane Generals (25-4-1).
I thought he played great last night, said
Kings head coach Shadoe Stoodley. There were
probably one or two goals that were a little soft,
but he faced 60 shots and came up with plenty
of big saves.
Entering the beehive, Kelly faced 60 shots,
stopping 54 of them as the Generals skated to a
6-3 win at the Spray Lakes Family Sports Centre.
Coming off the holiday break, the Kings led 1-0
after a first period which Stoodley thought was
their best period all season, but the wheels got
dislodged from the tracks in the second, as the
Generals poured in five goals on 25 shots.
After the second, I just went out in the hallway
and took a minute to relax and refocus, said the
Calgary product Kelly.
The Kings hosted the Banff Academy Bears
Bears (7-19-2) Jan. 10. Next, they take on the High
River Flyers (6-21-2) Jan. 13 at the Bob Snodgrass
Recreation Complex.

Spartans seize consolation final

TYLER LOWEY
Times Reporter
The Strathmore High School Spartans senior
boys basketball team shook off the holiday rust
with the Cobra Classic Tournament in Claresholm
over the weekend.
Short five players still on the holiday break, the
Spartans were bested 67-53 in the opener Jan. 6
by the Livingstone Sabres.
To help get through the game, Spartans head
coach Matt Laslo leaned on junior varsity player
Max Nelson to log some minutes.
Friday night we didnt bring a lot of intensity.
When you come out like that and spot a team the
lead, its tough to catch up, said Laslo.
The Spartans received a boost once they entered the consolation side Jan. 7 when they saw
the return of a pair of seniors in Caleb Funk and
Mackenzie Bain. Freshman guard Josh Filipionek
stepped up his game in the New Year and led the
Spartans to the 79-67 win over the West Island
Wolves.
Josh was incredible on Saturday, he played like
a senior out there, said Laslo. He was doing everything well: making passes, getting baskets and
getting our team out in transition.
The Spartans met the Eagle Butte Talons in the

consolation final and played their best game of

the tournament, clipping the Talons 90-78.
Leading the way was Bain, who was on fire from
the land beyond, dialing up eight three-pointers.
Ive never seen anyone hit that many threes in
a high school game before. He must really like
this tournament, because when he was in Grade
10, he hit six in one half once, said Laslo.
The Talons held a two-point lead with just under five minutes to go, but the Spartans closed out
strong on Bains lights-out shooting.
John Le May has been one of the Spartans best
crunch time players so far and saw his game
evolve in the tournament.
Hes always been able to score. Because of that
ability to score and his size, he is going to draw a
lot of double teams, said Laslo. Now, he is starting to realize that and he is turning into more of a
point-forward, kicking the ball out when he gets
trapped. We are able to score with ease when he
plays like that.
Now that the Spartans (3-1) are back into the
swing of things, they played their first Foothills
Athletic Council game on Jan. 11 (result not available as of press time) when they hosted the Oilfields High School Drillers (0-3).
The team will then take part in another tournament in Beaumont over the weekend.

Brady Hoover has been bailing out the Strathmore Wheatland Kings all season.
On Jan. 6, he went down awkwardly four minutes into the first period and left the game.
Insert rookie netminder Indiana Kelly.
Kelly was named the Kings (11-15-3) started for
their first home game of the New Year when they
play host to the Medicine Hat Cubs (6-19-6) the
next night at the Strathmore Family Centre.
The Kings were shorthanded four times in the
opening frame, but great pressure and stick work
forced many of the Cubs shots to come from the
perimeter.
The closer they get to the net, the more the
puck moves around and the more plays they can
make, said Kelly. If the shots are coming from
the outside, I have more time to track them and
react.
Scoreless after the opening frame, alternate
captain Brenden Moore grabbed Brandon Stahl
from a scrum and started feeding the winger his
lunch. For his malfeasance, Moore was assessed a
fighting major and instigating minor, sending the
Cubs to the power play for seven minutes.
The Kings carried the play whenever they
werent shorthanded, as they led 33-26 in shots
after two scoreless frames.
Hayden Vanderploeg spotted Kody Hammond
streaking through the neutral zone when he hit
him with a sharp two-line pass. Quickly breaking
in on net, Hammond who had already racked
up 16 minutes in penalties made a simple rightto-left move, getting free on the backhand and
roofing it to break the tie.
Finding an odd way to celebrate the go-ahead
goal, Matt Thomson picked a fight with Nolan Acton. The two were kicked out of the game. Thomson and Moore will each miss the next game after
fighting for the third time this year.
The lead stood for nearly 10 minutes, when the

Betty Bolinger passed away January 7, 2017 at the Prince

of Peace Manor near Calgary at the age of 94 years. She
was born at Ghost Pine Creek near Three Hills, Alberta on
November 4, 1922 to parents Walter and Bessie Ticknor.
Betty spent her early years on the family farm where she
developed a lifelong love of nature, birds and animals. After
graduating from Crescent Heights High School in Calgary,
Betty attended Hepburn Business College excelling in calligraphy. While boarding in a home in Crescent Heights, Betty
met her future husband, Mars Bolinger, who had rented the
garage from her landlord. Married in 1943, Betty and Mars
moved to a farm near Gleichen, Alberta in 1946 where they
worked together as a team for sixty years. Their farm yard
was a place of beauty admired by all. Bettys many talents
included gardening, sewing and stitchery. Betty especially
enjoyed her years as a soloist and a charter member of the
Gleichen and District Community Choir. Her beautiful soprano voice, often singing the obbligato, along with her acting,
costume and set design brought enjoyment to many. Betty
was predeceased by her husband Mars in 2004, sister Marjorie Dau in 1982 and son John in 1958. Betty is survived by
her children Susan (Allan) Bragg of Standard, Alberta, Robert (Gwen) Bolinger of Gleichen, Donna-May Bolinger (Colin)
of Sydney, Australia and Allen (Cindy) Bolinger of Gleichen.

Hilda May Northam (nee Sanderson) passed away on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at the Strathmore Hospital after a brief
illness at the age of 75 years young. Although her husband
Francis Lloyd is heartbroken, he rejoices with us that she is
now at peace - resting in the hands of our Lord. Hilda faced
her final days with humour, patience and great courage,
surrounded by family and friends. Ask anyone and they will
tell you that Hilda was a kind and loving person. She looked
after others, often without the other person being aware of
this special gift. She really liked to be in the counting room
at casinos paying great attention to details. Hilda had a special place in her heart for animals and she had several cats
and dogs over the years. Marbles the cat is forlornly looking
for her mother to come home. Hilda loved to listen to the
old time big bands as well as the music from the Maritimes.
Hymns such as Amazing Grace provided much comfort and
strength throughout the years. Hilda was proud to be the
Vice President of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Ladies Auxiliary Chapter 3475. She especially looked forward to attending the meetings and enjoyed the variety of service projects
that were undertaken. Bowling was another pleasure that
she shared with Lloyd. No matter her final score, she was
always laughing about the game, taking great pleasure in
the company of her team-mates. Hilda was predeceased
by her parents and her three brothers Russel, Gordon and
Lloyd. She is survived by her loving husband of 45 years,
Francis Lloyd, her nephew Bruce (Kathy), niece Jodi, and
many extended family members and friends. The family
thanks the staff at the Strathmore Hospital for their care
and support of Hilda on her final journey home. Family
and friends are invited to a visitation on Thursday, January 12, 2017 from 7-9 p.m. at Strathmore Alliance Church
(325 First Avenue, Strathmore, Alberta). A memorial service
will be held on Friday, January 13, 2017 at Strathmore Alliance Church at 10:00 a.m. No flowers please. If desired,
donations can be made directly to the Canadian Diabetes
Association (#204, 2323 32 Ave. N.E., Calgary, T2E 6Z3) or
the Alberta SPCA (10806 124 St., Edmonton AB, T5M 0H3).
