The U.S. Embassy is a group of facilities stationed in most countries.

It covers such a wide variety

of services for our country, the people that are in a foreign country from the U.S., the relationship
between countries, and the foreign country itself. It offers access to manly the workers itself and
their family. The Embassy has a very strong view on confidentiality because it stores a lot of
secret information about the government. It has 26 different departments. Having this job requires
you to be flexible because the jobs often rotate between the different Embassies in the world
every 2 years. Each Embassy is designed to represent their country. For example, Japans
embassy is designed like temples. Each Embassy is different in their own ways.
One of the departments is Economics. It deals with the full range of bilateral, regional, and
multilateral economic issues as well as environmental, energy, natural resources, health,
innovation, and science & technology affairs. It helps Australia as a whole by hosting meetings,
writing papers, having visitors, and phone calls. A normal day would be working on projects and
papers with a team of 3 people. Katie Garry got into this job by interning.
Another department is the Health Unit. The Health Unit provides primary care, special
referral, basic laboratory testing to mission employees and their family members. It also covers
consulates. Not all embassy have these departments but because the United States Embassy is
very large it is necessary. They provide a friendly competition with the staff of the embassy. They
do The Biggest Loser and have about 74 participants at the moment. They do this to promote
health and motivation to live healthier. Mary Nicholson got into this job because her husband
worked at the embassy and they were really in need of a nurse even though she did not
necessarily want to work.
Two departments in one are the Consular and Political units. The Consular has about 15
people on their team. They provide help and advice to American citizens living in Australia. This
may include replacing travel documents, advise and support in case of an accident, death, or
serious crimes while overseas. The Political part works to advance the global partnership
between the U.S. and Australia. The relationship between the two countries is Australias
strongest. We share military and alliance. Because America is by far the most technologically
advanced country, the goal is to help other countries follow a rule-based government. Jim
Manlowe landed this job after having 6 other carriers.
The Regional Security Office was our next stop. This department is full of special agents
of the U.S. Diplomatic Security Service that serve overseas. It has 2,000 special agents. Their
duty is to protect important people of Australia people going into the U.S. They also have criminal
investigations with visas, passports, and prepare and train for terrorist attacks. They have control
over the U.S. Marines. If there were to be an emergency at any point all they would have to do is
go to their lockers and get their reaction gear on. Jamie Berlowitz got the job after it randomly
popped up after already being in the field for 9 years.
The 337th Air Support Flight consists of 7 members. Their job is to provide a personal
exchange program. Services that are provided include; transportation, finance, legal, and
personnel (medical, housing, education, etc.) They exchange about 25 members and officers. It is
very rare that an Embassy would include this department.
The Management department is pretty basic. It oversees the function of multiple areas. It
really does not require much qualification. You must still go through testing and training There is
about 100 people on a management team. They look for people with different mindsets. A strong

Embassy would consist of lots of different types of minds. William Boyle was actually on broadway
for 3 years, then the Army, then the Embassy.
The Public Affairs section leads U.S. public diplomacy efforts in Australia. That is the
conduct of foreign relations directly with the average citizen of a country, rather than with officials
of a countrys foreign ministry. It deals more with media, public, society, not the government. They
do this by sending Aussies to the U.S. They also bring U.S. speakers to Australia. Kelli Long got
her job at the Embassy by originally working in the news and tested through in about 1 year and a
half.
Facilities Maintenance department plays a big role that does not get recognized that much.
They do all the maintenance and repair services to government owned buildings and residences,
along with servicing government installed appliances in all residences. This job can also be for
local Australians who qualify. They have about 25 staff.
The next major department is the Financial Management Center. This department provides
comprehensive financial services to the Mission through 5 departments. They keep track of all
payments within the U.S. An example may be leases, utilities, medical, paying security & military.
There are 8 accountants and 6 vouchers.
The final stop was the Front Office. The front office the the executive office for the Chief of
Mission and Deputy Chief of Mission. The four-person staff handles preparations and
arrangements for the Ambassador and DCM as the Presidents senior representatives in country.
In the main office is the Ambassador office which has a personal bathroom, it is big and comfy as
well. The furniture has to be from America, packaged and shipped very carefully, and still X-rayed
before coming into the Embassy.
All the people working in the Embassy have different backgrounds and some only have a
high school diploma. The spouses of the workers give up their life most of the time to help the
other so the Embassy will often provide a smaller job for them. The computers throughout the
Embassy must not face the windows due to the fear of satellites catching up on signals.
Everything must be kept track of very carefully. The United States Embassy in Australia was the
first ever in Australia. It was built in 1940. Everyone should be interested in these top secret
facilities because they do a lot more than realized for our country.
