era of days gone by as you learn about the wines while listening
to the rain come down on the tin roof.
In the crisp winter weather, bundle up and take a stroll
among the crimson vines, or enjoy a lunch you bring along at
one of the picnic tables surrounded by the natural beauty and
quiet countryside. Tour the historic cave and see in its unique
hand-hewn beams and tall shale walls. Dont forget to take a
peak in the century-old blacksmith shop, practically
untouched and complete with tools of the trade. Continue to
walk around the grounds taking in the craftsmanship of long
ago with the original late 1800s buildings all built straddling
the quiet Haus creek. The original farmhouse graces the north
east side of the property complete with stone root cellar that
was used to house goods during prohibition.
Though Pope Valley Winery is off the beaten path, this is
the stop you wont want to miss and well worth the extra drive.
In a tasting room where youre treated more like a friend than
a customer youll enjoy an experience you wont soon forget
and taste wines youll dream about coming back to.

Beringer Vineyards
Beringers Long, Rich History is Featured in Tours, Tastings and Events
Beringer might be one of the oldest and iconic working wineries in
Napa Valley, but its dedication to keeping up with the times, and even
ahead of the curve, is what continues to attract new and recurring
visitors to its St. Helena estate.
With renovations, new private tastings and events added to the
calendar, Beringer wants to offer something for every level of wine
enthusiast.
Steeped in History
Beringer winery has been offering tours of its facilities and
grounds for 82 years; it was the first to offer public tours in Napa
Valley. Its walking tours offer visitors a peek into the contributions of
the Beringer family to winemaking and to the history of the area.
2016 will marked its 140th harvest.
The property is listed on the National Register of Historic Places,
and many visitors come to the winery because of its historic
designation. Visitors can revel in many of the renovations aimed at
preserving the Rhine Houses character and attributes, such as
original stained-glass windows, authentic Ansel Adams photographs
and wood craftsmanship in the details of the old home.
In 1971, the Beringer family sold the winery. Treasury Wine Estates

Continued Innovation
For those new to wine, visitors can meander through the estates
manicured gardens, demonstration vineyard and historic grounds
before stepping up to the bar inside the historic Rhine House for a
traditional flight of Beringer wines.
Those with a bent for history will enjoy learning about the original
home, built in 1883, while a knowledgeable staff member provides
details about the wine they are tasting.
Visitors who want a more in-depth look into Beringers history
can take the Legacy Cave Tour. It is a 30-minute guide through the
old winery and historic tunnels, and includes tastes of three wines.
For a little more in-depth look into the winemaking process and
the art of wine and food pairing, visitors can book an hour-long
Taste of Beringer tour. A guide will walk visitors through the
Beringer property and demonstration vineyard, then lead a wine and
food pairing inside the Rhine House family kitchen. The wine
includes reserve wines paired with seasonal bites prepared by
Beringers own chefs.

celebrates a historic milestone this year, its 117th anniversary. Located in the
heart of the Napa Valley, off Highway 29, Beaulieu Vineyard welcomes visitors,
near and far, to one of the finest wineries in the world. In 1900, Georges de

Theres
Something
HUGE
in Downtown Calistoga
Founded by the owners of Knights Bridge Winery, the Huge Bear namesake comes
from an early twentieth-century newspaper article chronicling a local bear who
repeatedly surprised an early 1900s Knights Valley Justice of the Peace, in whose
home amongst others he could often be found, raiding for food. The bear was never
actually caught, giving motivation to organizers of the Bear Flag Revolt and therefore
was acknowledged on the Bear Flag of the short-lived independent Republic of
California. Today, the winery channels this story of unbridled, unstoppable selfdirection into its releases, and gives back to the community. Currently, with each
bottle sold in the tasting room, Huge Bear will donate back $1 to support local and
national non-profits. After each tasting room purchase, customers can choose to
donate this $1 per bottle to either the Calistoga Boys & Girls Club, The Napa Vine
Trail or The Bear League.

Trentadue Winery
Taste Delicious Sonoma County Winemaking History!
An Oasis of Californian/Italian Hospitality Awaits Your Visit!
Located just outside the small-but-mighty town of Geyserville is an oasis
of Californian/Italian hospitality, just waiting for you to come explore, sip,
savor and stay a while. Trentadue Winery is home to fabulous wines,
gracious hospitality, gorgeous grounds and one of Sonoma Countys
premiere event centers.
The tasting room is an Italianate villa, surrounded with beautiful
landscaping and burbling fountains. There is a beautiful redwood-shaded
picnic area in front of the tasting room, with several tables inviting visitors
to relax and stay a while. The event center sits off to the side, surrounded by
a hedge that encompasses redwood and oak tree shaded lawns.
Trentadue Winery is one of the first places to check out if you are
planning a wedding or other special event. Their event center is fully
equipped for any kind of event you could imagine and its professional
kitchen is a caterers dream.
Gondola tours of the vineyards are available by appointment and
private tasting areas are available for groups of up to 25 people.

Derrick Story
Gary Farrell Winery was founded in 1982 by Gary Farrell, who was
a pioneer in the Russian River Valley wine region. For more than 30
years, Gary Farrell Winery has crafted small-lot artisan wines that
capture the balance and stylistic elegance of some of the finest
vineyard sites in the region. Farrell sold the winery in 2004, and today
winemaker Theresa Heredia is nurturing Gary Farrells legacy of
producing small lots of Burgundian-styled, varietally expressive and
regionally distinctive Russian River Valley Pinot Noir and
Chardonnay. Additional information on the winery is available at
www.garyfarrellwinery.com.

pairing, and wine tasting experiences for both the wine novice and

The Restaurant at Wente Vineyards uses locally grown organic
ingredients and features ingredient-driven California wine country
cuisine. While the menu holds its foundation in American dishes, it is
influenced by French and Italian provincial cuisine. The seasonal menu
changes daily, utilizing produce from The Restaurants organic garden.
Wente Vineyards is also the only winery in Livermore Valley to
offer a championship 18-hole public golf course.
Family, food, entertainment, and of course, the wines beckon
visitors to experience the legacy that is Wente Vineyards.
VASCO ROAD
Livermore Valley, with its rich heritage and variety of wine tasting
experiences, should be a top destination that people consider when
planning their next wine country getaway. As the countrys oldest,
continuously operated, family-owned winery and Californias First
Family of Chardonnay, Wente Vineyards would be a good place to
start the journey. The winery, led by fourth and fifth generation family
members, has clearly proven their leadership both in winegrowing
and in being one of Californias premier wine country destinations.
The Winemakers Studio is an option for consumers to learn more

If you plan to take wine home with you, either in the car or on
a plane, buy a cardboard box with Styrofoam wine inserts. Fill it
during the day and this keeps wine from rolling around in the
trunk.
Check out the smaller wineries. It is a revelation.
Take notes on the wines you most enjoyed.
Take advantage of tours when the winery offers them, but keep
in mind that they take anywhere from 20 minutes to well over an
hour, so one a day is plenty.
Buy wines that you can only find at the winery. These often include smaller (375 ml) bottles of limited production ports or
dessert wines. Dont buy a wine you can get at a supermarket back
home.
Dont give too much thought to ratings and vintages. Its like
art: if you like it, its a good wine. It is as simple as that.
Remember that you dont have to do the driving. It takes no
more than a phone call to rent anything from a Town Car or restored Packard convertible to stretch limos and a 20-passenger bus.
All have drivers that will stow your wine for you and the local companies know the area. Tell the transportation company what you
have in mind and listen to their advice. They know the territory
and the people and personalities.
Know your limits. If you get close to it let others taste and you
can listen. It beats ending the day in a blur, and if need be calling
a taxi is cheaper than the alternative.
And if at a seated tasting, dont be afraid to leave a gratuity. Its
more than worth the five or ten dollars to get wisdom and wine

and a great time.
Do the Math
One of the questions most asked when it comes to wine is how much of this does it take to make that, and so on. We wont pretend that its simple, but here are some industry statistics that will give a pretty good
answer to that query. As with anything agricultural, of course, they are all based on countless variables when it comes to acre yields, but this is a good starting point. The rest of the information varies little if at all.
