Detailed Project Report for Fisheries Development of

Bundelkhand region.
Introduction:Fisheries sector is a source of livelihood for people engaged in
fully, partially or in subsidiary activities. It's an integral component of
rural development programme and its requirement of capital investment
is relatively low and gestation period short. Moreover it is gaining
importance due to its potential for employment generation. It caters
primarily to the needs of socio economically weaker and backward
communities of fishermen, SC, ST & OBC's, who constitute the poorest
section of the society. The end product is also an important and nutrient
rich food commodity.
The State Department of fisheries has taken a number of
innovative steps to encourage sustainable fish production from reservoirs
and ponds. It is also giving adequate emphasis on the conservation of
fish bio- diversity. The department is committed to encourage the
management of fisheries resources with adequate emphasis on various
welfare measures for poor fishers. It is also making serious efforts to
introduce appropriate technologies for improving per hectare production
from the reservoirs and ponds.. It is expected that the new initiatives
undertaken by the department in recent years would act as a necessary
engine for scaling new heights and opening up of new vistas in the
fisheries sector of the State. Availability of genetically improved seeds
of Indian major carps and exotic carps is also one of the prime objectives
of the department.

Detailed Project Report for Fisheries Development of Bundelkhand Region

Objectives of the Project:The objectives of the project are as follows:1.

2.

3.
4.
5.

To generate rural employment. Fish culture is helping in

increasing rural income and improving socio-economic status of
fishermen and members of SC, ST & OBC communities.
To enhance fish productivity and production by bringing
additional water area under fish culture through adoption of
scientific fish culture.
To promote co-operative sector for development and marketing of
fish.
To promote capacity building programme for fisher folks.
To make available protein rich food (fish) to the masses in the
rural areas.

Resources:Madhya Pradesh possesses 3.94 lakh hectare of water area in the

form of large, medium and small irrigation reservoirs, village ponds and
private ponds. Out of this 3.31 lakh ha. water area (99%) of the reservoirs
and 0.60 lakh ha water area (93%) of the village ponds and tanks i.e. a
total of 3.89 lakh ha. (98.12%) water area has been brought under fish
culture.
The inland fisheries resources of M.P. are vast and varied and one
of the richest in India. It includes 5 great river systems namely Ganges,
Narmada, Tapti, Mahi and Godavari and extensive network of their
irrigation canals, man made reservoirs, ponds and tanks. River Narmada
is the lifeline of Madhya Pradesh. The rivers and their tributaries form a
network of 17088 Kms. The tributaries of Ganges, Yamuna like
Chambal, Betwa, Ken, Sone & Sindh have their origin in the state. In
Bundelkhand region river Betwa, Ken , Dhasaan run across the area and
are available for fisheries activities . Under 1st phase of Bundelkhand

For management of fisheries in the region, the Department is

committed to develop fisheries through the people associated with this
trade through formation of their cooperatives , providing them ponds and
tanks and training them about the recent strides in the field of fish
culture and seed production.
Fish culture activity in the Bundelkhand region comprise of
culture-cum-capture techniques, which requires more emphasis on
stocking of large fingerlings, technology transfer to the ground level and
assistance in creation of infrastructure for developmental activities.

To give boost to development of fisheries and to generate

employment opportunities through it, the Govt. has taken the following
steps:1.
"Fishermen" has been defined as "A person who earns his
livelihood by catching fish by actually entering into the water
irrespective of his caste."
2.
All ponds above 5.00 ha. water areas are leased out, preferably to
fishermen cooperative societies.
3.
Fishermen cooperative societies are organized on the basis of
available water area.
4.
To attain self sufficiency in fish seed production, special attention
in being paid for use of selected seasonal ponds for rearing seed
on large scale by encouraging co-op societies & private fish
farmers.
5.
Provide short term loan on zero percent interest for working
capital through Fishermen Credit Card.
6.
Loans on easy installments with low interest rate to be provided to
fishermen for nets and boats.
7.
Peripheral fish seed rearing model & Pen culture techniques are
being popularized to raise large fingerlings for stocking the
reservoirs.

Emphasis on genetically improved broods from the natural

resources will be given. All efforts will be made to improve the survival
percentage from spawn to fry and fingerlings. There is need to maintain
right ratio of stocking catla, rohu and mrigal in reservoirs and
introduction of grass carp, silver carp and common carp in the ponds and
tanks. Raising the stunted fingerlings for stocking in reservoirs and sort
seasonal ponds will be popularized. Likewise, stocking of large
fingerlings will be encouraged.
Fish Production:During the year 2012-13, the fish production of the state was
85236 tons. The contribution of Bundelkhand region is as under :

To increase fish production from reservoirs, the fishermen cooperatives will be encouraged to raise large size fingerlings insitu and
also raise stunted fingerlings to ensure increased retrievals. To improve
the per unit catch, the fishers will be provided with suitable craft and
tackles. They will also be trained in fish storage, preservation and
transportation and linkages to the market. The role of middle man in fish
marketing will be eliminated or reduced so that the benefit of the product
may accrue to the producer. There is no doubt that the fisheries can
improve the socio-economic status of the people associated with this
trade.
