Selling on Instagram in Malaysia, the reality.


The increment of internet users and better internet accessibility in Malaysia have open a new door to simplied
online selling. Instagram is not the only platform, thats a fact. However, number of users on Instagram in
Malaysia have increased signicantly in past years.
This make me wonders:
1. Is it easy to sell on Instagram?
2. Why do Malaysian buy through Instagram?
3. How to set an online store on Instagram?

Why Instagram?
In my personal experience, it is simple. Instagram has less spam than the other platform which I choose not to
name here. Of course there are spam, mostly in the comment section. That can be easily nullify by turning the
comment of or blocking certain users comment.
The best part of Instagram is less people scan the content but actually engage to the post. When we open our
Instagram account rst we see is a list of our feed, which we need to scroll down. Sometime there are
sponsored content which mean somebody paid for it to get our attention.
We can always tell Instagram if we dont like any of it.
Giving like to post is easy. Double tap it quickly and a heart will appear. We can now continue to scroll down.
There is no sidebar, pop up or splash page. Never once I have to enter an email to see any content on
Instagram
So, for me Instagram is simple.

How to sell on Instagram.


For a starter, you have to sign up, and become a user if that is not obvious. The following part is actually an art.
There is no exact one way to sell on Instagram. Here are some examples;
1. If you have an online store, put the link in your bio. Your post on Instagram will be around your products,
testimonies from previous customers, activities in your store and time sensitive promotions. This way,
your Instagram is more look like a front door and the sales happen at your actual e-store. just remember
to remind the visitors to check out your bio in each post.
2. You dont have to have a store to sell. Stock some product at your home and promote it through
Instagram. At your bio, instead of a link, you put contact and payment option for potential buyer. Simple
and straight forward. Even though ti is not automated, it is still doable for home-based business.
3. Instead of products, you can also promote service or attract visitors to your blog (like what I am doing
so far).

What not to post on Instagram?

Instagram is notoriously known for removing post and taking down accounts that do not comply with their term

Okay, lets talk about customers feedback a.k.a testimonies. In Malaysia, most Insta shop are using whatsapp for
closing deals between potential buyer and sellers. So, some seller screen shot these conversation and post it
straight away on their Instagram. Dont do that.
Why this is not helpful?
I know, they want build condence to their crowd, but notice how Instagram arrange its gallery to the viewer?
Something like the photo I posted up there. Now imagine if all nine frame are screen shots of whatsapp
conversation. That just ugly.

What is a better way to post customers feedback on Instagram.


There are a few ways to do that.
1. Ask your customers to post on their Instagram account (or other social media account) the item their
received from you. Then you re-post that picture to your account. If the customers tag you on theirs
account, that event better.

2. Focus on activities of your shop rather than screen shots of feed back. Post your product, some picture of
you or your sta packing it, and when they are ready for delivery.
3. Focus on problem and answer. Post pictures that best represent the problem your potential customers
may be having. Then, post pictures of benets or solutions they can get after using your product or
services.

Video vs still picture: Instagram.


While both work well, try combining the two balancely. All video post on account can be a turn o for a slow
internet users. Make your gallerry mainly compose of pictures and then mixed it up with some videos.
However, a videos can be a useful if your product need technical tutorial to use it. Demonstrate that on your
instagram video. Oh, if you are modelling it yourself, make yourself look decent. Buyer will have more condent
compare to looking at sloppy sellers.

Instagram is design for photography.


Instagram is design for photography. Dont go against it, leverage it. A good picture always get tons of like on
Instagram and tend to get you more followers. It does not take a digital SLR camera to shoot photo to be publish
here. Just a simple smartphone will deliver good results with all those lters available.
So, start building your follower now. Maybe you are not selling anything today, but who knows when some
opportunity come around.
