Analysis of existing magazine titles

Billboard

The title "Billboard" is very simple and matches the content that is used inside of the
magazine. This magazine is based around the billboard charts and therefore the title is
placed there to match the theme. This then makes the inside of the magazine very
predictable to an audience. I would like my magazine to be predictable as it makes
more sense and would make my magazine an easier read. Each headline also shows
which genre of music the specific magazine is exploring. It is a very creative cover of
the magazine yet the masthead is very basic. I would like my magazine to be very
creative but through my masthead and the cover lines on the cover, I would like the
contents of my magazine to be revealed and for it to be well established.
Q

This magazine follows a very consistent colour pattern as red and white is used to make
the colours stand out and makes the masthead very noticeable. Q is a very unique,
small title so therefore would give nothing away about the contents of the magazine.
The title is always in the same font and always remains in the same place on the
magazine. This shows a consistency in both theme and genre in all sectors of the
magazine. As the title is always the same it could show that the same style of music
remains the same. It also helps draw the attention to the artists face as they sometimes
cover or overlap the title block. I would like magazine title to have vibrant colours and
stand out as much as this title does.

Rolling Stones

Rolling Stones title is very hidden behind Artists heads and the writing is very simplistic.
The colouring of red stays predominant throughout most of the magazines which helps
it to stand out as it is usually on a much darker background. The font portrays a very
handwritten style and one that can be associated with younger ages. The colouring,
dependent on the background, always stands out the most and is the one of the most
recognisable title as it is also the name of a very well populated and recognized band.
By keeping the title the same, it shows consistently on not just the rand but inside the
magazine as well.
i-D

This magazine has a very clear and sophisticated design and the outcome can be made
very clear. This is due to the font remaining the same on all specific types of magazine
and although the title sometimes turns at a 90 degrees angle, it remains in the same
section, the left hand side of the page. It is a very simple name as it only consists of 2
letters but due to this it can be easily recognisable and the reader would remember it a
lot more. The i-D represents a winking face which is always imitated by the artist on the
front cover so it shows that there is a pattern and consistency between both the artist
and the title. This can then be another recognizable trait for the magazine.
