Anas ibn Mlik I reported that Allhs Messenger H said I am

Muammad, the son of Abdullh, the son of Abd al-Mualib,
the son of Hshim, the son of Abd Manf, the son of Quayy,
the son of Kilb, the son of Murrah, the son of Kab, the son of
Luayy, the son of Ghlib, the son of Fihr, the son of Mlik, the
son of Nar, the son of Kinnah, the son of Khuzaymah, the son
of Mudrikah, the son of Ilys, the son of Muar, the son of Nizr,
the son of Maadd, the son of Adnn.
Whenever people split into two groups, Allh placed me in the
better of the two. So I was begotten by my parents untouched in
anyway by the fornication [prevalent] in the Time of Ignorance
29

(Jhilyah). I was born from a union of marriage and I did not come
from a relationship of fornication since the time of dam, until I
was born to my father and my mother. So I have the best lineage
among you and the best forefathers.4 (Bayhaq in Dalil al-Nubwah)5

4.Several scholars have recommended knowing, and even memorizing, the

lineage of the Prophet H as mentioned in Imm Bjrs Rislat al-Tawd and
Imm Jurdns Murshid al-Anm. See Appendix #1 for a memorization chart of
the Prophets paternal lineage.
5.Dalil al-Nubwah, vol. 1, p. 174
This transmission chain (isnd) of this adth is weak (af) due to Abdullh ibn
Muammad ibn Rabah al-Qudmah S appearing in it. fi Ibn ajar S, Ibn Ad
S and many other scholars have concluded that he is a weak narrator. Abdullh ibn
Muammads narrations are especially problematic when he reports from Imm
Mlik ibn Anas S, as he has done so in this adth. (Lisn al-Mzn 4399)
However, it should be noted that other narrations do exist that substantiate this
report. For example, Imm Amad ibn anbal S has recorded a version of this narration through another isnd in his Musnad (no. 1788) which Shaykh Shuayb al-Arn
i has classified as extrinsically authentic (a li ghayrih). Imm al-Tirmidh S
has also recorded a similar narration in his Jmi (no. 3532).
