< INTRODUCTION >

1.

Basis of this specification is composed of excerpts from the Architectural Institute of

Japans Recommendation for Quality Criteria and Inspection General Standards of
Steel Structures based on JASS 6, Additional Rule 6 Steel Structure Accuracy
Inspection Standard, which refers to the control and limit tolerances of major steel
structures, measuring tools and methods.

It serves as the basis for acceptance

criteria for the fabrication and erection of structural steel for common building.
By the way, for mechanical equipment installation, such as Steering Rolls, Loop
Cars and related mechanical equipments in the iron plant, strict fabrication
accuracy is required in general.

Then, special tolelance of accuracy is given

herewith specification based on MHs internal standard.

prescribed for only significant portions of the structure.

Such requirement is
Unless otherwise

prescribed, common acceptance criteria specified in this specification are applicable.

(Special requirement specified in clause 1.2.5 governs common acceptance
criteria.)
*The control tolerances essentially are target values in fabrication.
*The limit tolerances are the maximum permissible errors which shall not be
exceeded as a rule.

2.

In shop fabrication, do not perform any work aiming at the tolerances given herein,
but make every effort to produce quality products with as few errors as possible.
an unavoidable case only, a tolerance given herein shall be used as the maximum
permissible limit for acceptance criteria.

Standards of Steel Structures

1.

General
1.1

Scope
This guide refers to JASS 6, Additional Rule 6 Steel Structure Accuracy
Inspection Standard (1.2 of this guide) and details how to use the rule.

It applies

to general steel structures and does not apply to the following items:
(1)

Cases specially specified or cases approved by responsible persons

(2)

Structures or portions of structures which require very strict accuracies

(3)

Insignificant structures or portions of structures

(4)

Tolerances of steel products specified by JIS

1.2

Steel Structure Accuracy Inspection Standard and standard measuring methods

This section deals with JASS 6, Additional Rule 6 Steel Structure Accuracy
Inspection Standard and with the standard measuring methods according to the
standard.
It is allowable to not use these methods if other methods confirmed to be able to
measure with accuracies equal to or higher than those specified herein are
available.
In measuring dimensions, a suitable measuring position and time, and a suitable
supporting method of structural members shall be selected with consideration to
the deformation, elongation, contraction and rigidity of the members by steel
temperatures.

Measuring devices and jigs shall be well maintained and controlled

to obtain the specified accuracies.

The standard measuring methods, etc., are

described in Section 3.

1) To measure the column length of 10 m

or over, apply a tension of 5 kg. For a
column length of less than 10 m,
tensioning by hand is allowed.
2) Take measurement on an arbitrary
column surface. Place a steel tape
measure along the column flange and
measure the length between first hole
centers for bolted joint and between
ends for welded joints. For the base of
the first tier of column, take
measurement on the bottom surface of
the base plate.

Carpenters square

2) The floor level from the column base to

the first bracket is from the bottom
surface of the base plate, column base
hole center (joint by H.S. bolts) or end of
column base (welded joint) to the upper
surface of the upper flange at the
bracket end.

Jig for bolt pitch

3) The height of floor shall be measured

between the upper flanges at the bracket
end.

to column head is from upper surface of
upper flange of joint to first bolt hole in
capital for bolted joints and to end of
material for welded joints.

Measuring method
1) Curvature can be determined by visual
check as well as by measurement. In
the later case, take measurements in
both height and width directions.
2) For the height direction, lay the beam on
its side, stretch a piano wire or plumb
string along the flange edge, measure
the distances from beam center and
both edges from it. For the width
direction, set the beam on edge and
measure in the same manner.
