Little Steps. Big Faith.
A new way to help
children take their first
steps of faith.

We are excited to announce a new

program at St. Johns which will begin
TODAY, January 15, 2017, at 10:00 a.m.
in the nursery for children ages 0-3. This
program offers classes for parents or
caregivers and their children. Caregivers
may be any caring adult who is
committed to the childs faith formation.
A caregiver must attend with the child.
The class will include a Bible Story,
songs, and then play time in any of the
learning centers that enhance the Bible
Story of the Day. If you would be
interested in being a class leader, please
contact Jolene by checking the church
register slip, email
jziebell55.cableone.com, or call 402371-1985.

CALL COMMITTEE REPORT

In November the Nebraska Synod office
submitted the names of two candidates for us to
review. The call committee felt the one candidate
did not meet the needs of St. John's and we
decided to not continue the call process.
After reviewing the other candidate's profile it
was agreed to proceed with a Skype interview.
After the interview and after prayerfully
considering St. John's this candidate did not sense
the call of the Holy Spirit to continue in our Senior
Pastor call process.
We ask the congregation to keep the search of a
new Senior Pastor in their prayers as we await
information on new candidates.

From Lisa Kramme, Director of Faith

Formation, NE Synod ELCA:
"Thanks to a generous grant from the
Immanuel Vision Foundation in early 2016, the
Nebraska Synod launched a new ministry
called the LYON Leadership Team. LYON,
which stands for Lutheran Youth of Nebraska,
has a long history in our synod. With Immanuel
grant funds, we intentionally invited, gathered
and equipped youth for the sake of faith
formation and leadership development. In
addition, the Team planned the 2016 LYON
Assembly, an annual gathering of high school
youth and their adult leaders in our synod."
The letter goes on to request identification of
youth who could be part of the LYON
Leadership Team in 2017. Young people
currently in grades 8-11 are welcome to apply
for the LYON Leadership Team by completing
an application. Up to three youth may apply
from any one congregation. The application
must be sent and received no later
than January 27, 2017. The youth must be
available in Lincoln on Sun., March 19, 2017, in
Omaha on the weekend of September 30 October 1, 2017, and in Hastings from
November 17-19, 2017. The youth must be
willing to attend gatherings of the Team in April
(online), July (face-to face), August (online) and
October (online). The face-to-face gathering will
take place at a location that is a geographically
central location for Team members. If
interested, please request a 2017 LYON
Leadership Team application from the church
office.

Mission Outreach for

January and February
Brr-rr-rr! The weather is cold and it is cold
and flu season.
Good Neighbors can use our monetary help
to help others pay heating bills. If you are
able to contribute monies during January and
February, it would be appreciated.
In addition, the Rescue Mission can use
paper products. St. Johns will be collecting
paper products for the Rescue Mission during
the remaining part of January and all of
February. Paper products include napkins,
paper towels, toilet paper, tissues (like Puffs,
Kleenex). The first 4 items are what is most
needed but they could use paper plates, cups,
disposable tableware. Watch for collection
areas in the church!

COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS December, 2016

At the December meeting, the St. Johns Council
prepared for the upcoming annual meeting. After
reviewing it in October and November, the Council
unanimously approved a budget for 2017 to submit to
the congregation.
The November treasurers report was discussed at
length with thoughts on covering the considerable
shortfall in giving for the general fund.
Candidates for Council, Benefaction, Synod
Assembly Representatives, and the Legacy Fund (if
approved) were discussed. Several candidates are still
needed.
The Congregational Audit Report was reviewed
and discussed. Some recommendations were identified
to act on at the January meeting. The remainder of the
suggestions were being followed or can easily be
changed in practice.
A motion was passed to support Ron Lofgren in
the PMA program. The financial support for Lofgren
and Nancy Jacobs is reflected in the proposed budget.
A complete copy of the minutes is available
outside the church office or by mailing or emailing the
church office.

Warmth, Peace and Pajamas Project

We are deeply moved by th4e generosity of
your church family. Thank you for your
donations of either money or an actual pair of
new pajamas. Through your generosity and
many others in Norfolk, we were able to give
needy children a new pair of pajamas. You gave
many children a very merry Christmas. God
thanks you for being such good servants! Our
deepest wishes for a blessed New Year
