ASSIGNMENT

#1
INTEGRATED MEDIA and CONTROL
COMP 3096 17W
TECHNOLOGY INTIGRATION 2

For this assignment you will integrate multiple types of media content and control.

INTRUCTIONS:

1) Projects can be prepared by groups of 2 or 3 students (depending on complexity).
Each group can use a single equipment setup, but each individual group member
must demonstrate their own unique content and control programming.

2) Your equipment setup must include a minimum of 3 pieces of hardware and or
software acting as control devices. Hardware or software include:

Lighting playback systems (GIO, Nomad, Light Factory, SCS, Manual console)
Audio playback (CD Players, Media Player/SCS on PC
Video playback (DVD player, Arkaos, Media player, Power point)
Arduino
Relays
Midi Interfaces

3) Use a minimum of 2 different types of control protocols between control devices.

Control protocols include: DMX, Serial, MIDI, Contact closure, Telnet, OSC, Serial
over network.
4) Integrate at minimum of 2 different types of media:

Stage lighting controlled by DMX. Examples; LED, moving lights, dimmers.

Audio content from playback system. Examples; CD player, audio software on
a PC to speakers.
Video content from conventional playback system. Examples: DVD player or
video software on a PC. Display can be projector or LCD monitors.
LED arrays
Lighting using non-conventional equipment such as props with LEDs
Audio using non-conventional equipment such as hacked toys, WAV file
players

This project is due of February 13th 2017 in class and will be demonstrated that day.

ASSIGNMENT 1 EXAMPLES

You are welcome to use one of the following examples or an alteration of. You are encouraged
to also be creative with your own design. If you have another option you would like to pursue
please check with your instructor. Your project description must be discussed with the
instructor and approved before proceeding.

EXAMPLE 1:
The GIO lighting console runs a cue sequence that operates stage lights and sends DMX signals
to trigger sound cues in SCS (Show Cue System) on PC#1. The SCS software in turn sends MIDI
signals to PC#2 that is running Arkaos software. Arkaos software plays back video clips that sync
with the lights and audio cues. BONUS: Arkaos image controls move the projected image so
that a moving spotlight (controlled by GIO) stays centred in the video image as it moves across
stage.

EXAMPLE 2:
An actor reaches into a table lamp onstage and turns a light switch. The switch activates closing
a contact closure on a MIDI generating box. The MIDI box sends a MIDI signal into SCS software
on a PC activating a sound sequence. SCS also sends a DMX signal to a GIO console which
activates a lighting sequence.

EXAMPLE 3:
A switch connected to an Arduino runs an internal program that flickers LEDs built into a prop
torch. The Arduino also sends serial command to a PC running SCS. This activates sound cues
that synchronize with the torch flicker.

EXAMPLE 4:
An OSC interface on an IPAD operates Nomad software on a PC. This sends DMX signals to lights
and serial messages to an internal port. On the same PC, SCS receives the serial messages and
triggers audio cue playback.
