(Do not use pencil. Answer to all parts of a question must be at one place and in sequence)
Q1.
(a) Given an information sequence as 10100111 and the divisor as 10111. Generate the code word
at sender site.
[12]
(b) A sender need to send the four 16-bit data items given in hexadecimal form as: 3456, ABCC,
02BC, and EEEE. Answer the following:
(i) Find the checksum at the sender site.
(ii) Find the checksum at the receiver site if the second data (ABCC) is changed to ABCE and the
third data (02BC) is changed to 02BA. Are you able to detect the error?
[4+4]
Q2.
(a)
(i) A single stage space switch (non-blocking) was designed to support 128 subscribers. Find the
total number of switching elements required.
(ii) You are required to replace this single stage switch with a 3-stage space switch, such that
blocking probability will not exceed 0.05, for inlet utilization of 0.1. Assume the number of
arrays in first and third stage are 8 (i.e. n=16). Give and draw your design to have minimum
number of switching elements. Calculate the switching elements used in this 3-stage switch.
(iii) Calculate the switching advantage of this 3-stage switch in (ii) over the single stage switch in
(i).
[2+12+1=15]
(b) Find the number of digitalized stereo music channels (in uncompressed form), that can be
carried in a STS-1 frame. Assume the information bit is only carried in SPE of STS-1 frame.
[5]
Q3.
(a) Show the execution of Dijkstras algorithm to find the shortest paths from source node 5 to all
other nodes in the given below network

[10]
PTO.

(b) A message of 100-kbyte need to be transmitted across a single transmission link with a bit error
rate of 10-8. What is the average number of bits need to be transmitted for correct delivery of
message. Assume the message is packetized into 2-kbyte packets and transmitted across the
same link. Calculate the average number of bits need to be transmitted for correct delivery of
message in terms of packets. (Ignore the size of the packet header)
[10]
Q4.
(a) Parameters are defined for a switching network:
N = number of hops between two given end systems
L = message length in bits
B = throughput rate (number of bits a device can put on the link in one second)
P = fixed packet size, in bits
H = overhead (header) bits per packet
S = path setup time in seconds
D = propagation delay per hop in seconds
Find out the value of P, as a function of N, L, H results in minimum end-to-end message transfer
delay for a virtual circuit network. Assume that path setup time is three times the throughput
delay (from one device) of a single packet and D is zero.
[15]

(b) Two musician located in different city want to have a jam session over a communication network.
Find the maximum possible distance between the musicians if they are to interact in real time. In
the sense of experiencing the same delay in hearing each others if they were 15 meter apart. The
speed of sound is approximately 330m/sec and assume that the network transmit the sound at the
speed of light in cable at 2.3 x 108 m/sec.
