Anatomy and Physiology I/Lab

Last Revision Date: 06/2016
I. COURSE NUMBER AND TITLE:
Semester & Year: Fall 2016 (201720)
Course Start and End Dates: 08/22/2016 - 12/07/2016
Course CRN & Section: 20306 DA2
Meeting Days and Times:
Lecture: MWF 7:55 8:45 AM
Laboratory: Parker Science Annex 6 Wednesdays 9 -11:45 AM
II. INSTRUCTOR:
Name: Dr. Chrissy Williams
Email: cwilliams3@nova.edu
Office Hours: Please schedule appointment
Location: Parker Building
III. COURSE DESCRIPTION:
This is the first part of a two-part course that deals specifically with form and function of
vertebrate organ systems. The lecture period stresses human physiology and the
laboratory is mainly devoted to gross anatomy. However, the lecture and laboratory are
presented in a unified fashion with the aim that each reinforces the other in presenting a
complete picture of functional morphology. Although lower vertebrates are used for
comparative purposes, mammalian systems receive major emphasis in both lecture and
laboratory.
Prerequisite: BIOL 1500 or equivalent
IV. LEARNING OUTCOMES:
After successful completion of this course the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the chemical, cellular and tissue levels of
organization
2. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of the human
integumentary system
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of the human skeletal
system

4. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of the human muscular

system
5. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of the human nervous
system
6. Demonstrate an understanding of the structure and function of the human endocrine
system
V. REQUIRED TEXTS AND MATERIALS:
Required Textbooks:
Martini, F.H., Nath, J.L. & Bartholomew, E.F. (2014) Fundamentals of Anatomy and
Physiology, 10th edition. Benjamin Cummings. San Francisco, California. ISBN: 9780321909077
Amerman, E. (2013) Exploring Anatomy & Physiology in the Lab. Morton Publishers,
Englewood, Colorado.2nd edition. ISBN-13: 9781617310560

Lab Supplies (Required):
Bring lab coat, protective eye-gear, closed shoes, atlas, notebook paper, pencils and
colored pencils.
VI. COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
Students are expected to arrive on time and attend all classes. All cell phones and
beepers are to be turned off. Please do not bring or eat food in the classroom during the
lecture. You may use laptops to aid in note-taking, but if you are found to be using a
laptop for any other purpose during class time, you will lose your laptop privileges for the
remainder of the semester. Attendance is taken at the beginning of each class. Lab
attendance is mandatory. If there is no make-up for the lab you missed, 3% of your final
class grade is deducted for each missed lab. A student must attend the entire class to
receive credit. You are allowed to attempt each exam/quiz only once. All assignments,
tests and exams are due or begin at the beginning of the scheduled class session. Late
work will not be accepted. It is the student's responsibility to acquire any missed material
or announcements from a fellow student. There will be no make-up or late work
accepted, with the exception of bona-fide documented excuses following NSUs policy.
The procedure to turn in work late or complete a missed assignment requires the student
to contact me as soon as possible to make arrangements. Do not wait until the next class
session you attend to request a make-up or to turn in late assignments. I will do my best
to return all phone calls and e-mails within 24 hours Monday - Friday, and within 48

hours Saturday-Sunday.
Work conflicts, late registration, family events and transportation difficulties are not
eligible for make ups. Student athletes must provide their anticipated conflict dates and
also have their coach verify any NSU athletic event that conflicts with the class schedule
in order to arrange for any makeups.
Any impropriety (e.g. cheating, plagiarism) on exams or lab reports, will constitute
grounds for failing the course. I expect you to make it clear to me when you do not
understand something, preferably by asking questions in class. Alternatively, see me
during my office hours.

I. Class assignment (5%)
A. Lecture Exams (20%)
Four lecture examinations will be administered during the semester. The material tested
will come primarily from the lecture notes and the textbook. There are no unexcused
make-ups. Document(s) should be provided for excused make-up exams.
B. Mid-Term Lecture Examination (15%)
The mid-term examination will include material from all the chapters covered until that
time. Attendance is mandatory. No make-ups.
C. Final Comprehensive Examination (20%)
The final comprehensive exam will be administered during finals week. The exam will
include material from all chapters covered in class. Attendance is mandatory. No makeups.
D. Lab Quizzes (12%)
Lab tests will cover material up until that date. Tests start within the first minute of the

lab period. There are no unexcused make-ups. Document(s) should be provided for
excused make-up exams.
E. Pre-Lab Worksheets (4%)
To be turned in at the START of the lab. If it is not, you will be penalized points.
F. Lab Exercices and Lab Attendance (4%):
Attendance to all labs are mandatory. Each student must complete all scheduled exercises
during their lab session including model survey, histology, physiology and dissection.
They will turn in their completed work at the conclusion of the lab session during the
clean-up time. If a lab is missed for any reason and the student does not make up for that
lab, the student will lose 3% of their final grade for each lab absence.
G. Mid-term Practical Examination (10%)
The mid-term examination will be administered to test each students skill of observation
and ability to identify anatomical structures and physiological processes. The mid-term
exam will cover all material to that date. No make-ups.
H. Final Practical Examination (10%)
The final practical examination will be administered to test each students skill of
observation and ability to identify anatomical structures and physiological processes. It
will cover all remaining material from the mid-term. Attendance is mandatory. No makeups.
I. Class assignments (5%)
You will complete a specific assignment. The details of the assignment is available on
blackboard.
NOTE: Students that arrive late for any lecture or laboratory exam will only have the
time remaining before the exam is officially concluded to complete it.
