Wolves Dominate in Budapest's Derby
Two months ago the Cowboys and the Wolves fought an exciting battle for the Hungarian
championship. ln the rematch the Wolves won confidently, leaving no doubt that they are in the race
for the final again in the Central-European Football League (CEFL). Budapest Cowboys - Budapest
Wolves 22:61.
The Wolves started impressively as they blocked a punt on the Cowboys' first drive, setting up Obi
Mbagwu's easy score from 9 yards out. The answer was almost immediate by the opponent. After
Gbor Kalovits' big catch, Andre Byno brought his team to the one-yard line, and then into the end
zone. Two drives later Krisztin Piros returned a shor punt 35 yards for a touchdown. This was the
standout receiver's third punt return touch-down in CEFL this season. The first quarter ended with a
score of 13-7.
California native Obi Mbagwu once again found his way to the end zone in the second, this time
from 40 yards out. The Cowboys had to put some points on the board to keep them m the game. n
a long drive the Canadian Byno scored his second rushing touchdown with only a minute lelt on
the clock. Not knowing the rivalry going on between the two top teams m Hungary, one would have
expected the Wolves to just run the clock down, but they thought otherwise. Quarterback Attila
Lendvai engineered a perfect drive highlighted by two spectacular passes. The first one to Csand
Kirly in a small opening between three defenders and the second to Mbagwu from 16 yards for the
touchdown with only 2 seconds lelt.
Although the Cowboys kickoff team started the third quarter with a touchdown from a fumble, the
Wolves were unstoppable from that point on. After a 40-yard kick return by Csand Kirly, Lendvai
connected with the receiver from 50 yards for six. n their next possession the Wolves quarterback
once again found Kirly for a touchdown, and this made it 20-41 after the successful extra.
In the fourth quarter backup Norbert Erdlyi found the endzone once, and spring season's starter
Lszl Csizmazia - returning from a summer job from the States this week - ran in rn-o more to seal
the victory. The Cowboys were able to score on a blocked extra as Mihly Bnfi returned the ball
for 9 yards for 2 points, butit was too little too late for them.
The game showed Hungarian fans that the Wolves are still well ahead of the pack in Hungary. It also
serves as a nice confidence booster for the red-and-black team, since they are playing a solid CNC
Gladiators team this Saturday. The Austrians beat the Wolves for he first time in five meetings this
spring, sending the Hungarian boys on a 1-3 streak.
