An Honest Boy
George Washington, the first president of the United States,
was an honest boy, according to legend. Here is the legend about him.
One day when George Washington was a little boy, his
father gave him a present. The present was an axe. The
axe was a useful present because the Washington family
lived on a farm. George was very happy with the axe and
began to play with it right away.
The next day, his father was surprised and unhappy when he saw his
favorite cherry tree. The tree wasnt standing up any more, but instead it
was lying on the ground. The father was angry and asked George, George!
Did you cut down the cherry tree with your new axe?
George was afraid because his father was angry, but he was brave. He said
to his father, Father, I cannot tell a lie. Yes, I cut down the tree.
George didnt know that it was wrong to cut down the tree. But he knew that
it was wrong to tell a lie. And he couldnt tell a lie to his father.
