RESIDENT PROFILE

Suzanne and Roy Humphrey

We dont have to shovel snow ever again!! The first things
sold in our garage sale once we decided to move was the
snow shovel. The second was the house literally! The
market in the Denver area was so hot in 2015 for main-level
master bedroom that a couple who visited the garage sale
bought the house after a 15-minute tour of our very disorganized house. No better sign!
How did we select Sun City Festival? After visiting several
communities where we have friends who own lovely homes,
we just couldnt stop focusing on beautiful, friendly, remote
Sun City Festival. We werent going to make any rash decisions for a couple of years, but we couldnt stay off the 55+
community website. One house kept calling our name and
we took the plunge and bought it! Never saw it until we
came down for the inspection. Irrational!
NO REGRETS! Our decision to uproot from our stunning
(but cold and snowy) home state and leave all our family
and Colorado friends was a tough one, but we bit the proverbial bullet and did it. We love the location; far enough
from town yet close enough to get all we need.
We thought it might take a long time to meet new friends.
How wrong we were. Seek and ye shall find! After meeting our neighbors on all sides, attending a party with our
friends from Colorado, a stroll down Potter where Suzanne
met one person in a chance encounter that ballooned into
many wonderful friends, and buying a bicycle from a neighbor where more friendships evolved, we have friends. We
are truly blessed and look forward to more. Wow! Now our
toughest decision is what to bring for an appetizer!
We have been married 29 wonderful years and lived most
of our lives in Colorado. However, we were not always
together. Roy spent nearly 20 years as a consultant living
out of a suitcase. Suzanne spent 25 years managing banks
and lending money before buying a card and gift store. After 5 years, 9-11, changing demographics, and the internet,
the stores were closed. Suzanne then did her best to save
the entire Arapahoe County election judge process; she
nearly succeeded between near nervous breakdowns.

We are the mother and stepdad to two sons. One lives in

Aurora, CO where he owns his own mobile DJ business and
the other lives with his lovely wife in Greenville, SC. She
is the Ticketing Director for the Peace Center and he has
decided to return to school to become a certified personal
trainer. We will be waiting for our session as he will have
much work to do in that regard. No grandchildren and not
anticipating any.
Once relocated to Festival, Roy decided to stop traveling
and started working part-time helping local companies
(central Phoenix) find alternative funding when they do not
meet the banks lending criteria. Suzanne is again saving the world by working part-time at the Festival Member
Services desk in the Sage Center. Say Hi when you see
her smiling face.
We have enjoyed some travelling and discovering our state
and others adjoining it. Together we enjoy hiking, golfing,
biking, Barrel Buddies, attending Festival events, and playing with our friends. Suzanne participates in Lady Putters,
FABs, is learning to play mah jongg, enjoys writing, taking
the ASU classes and fooling around with family photo projects. Roys time is mostly consumed by his part-time job,
but enjoys opportunities to join his friends in their activities.
We are just very grateful for finding such a wonderful active
and friendly community with very special friends. We think
we live in paradise!

The Heart of
the Matter

by Chuck Eier, M.S. C.S.C..

Fitness/Wellness Director

With February being American Heart Month, we should all take time to learn a few
things about the importance of heart health. The heart is the most important muscle
in the body. It works twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week without any rest. We
all have at least some risk factors for heart disease. Some factors we cannot control
are age, gender and family history. Risk factors we can control are obesity, being sedentary, smoking, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. Below are some statistics
about heart disease:
An estimated 82.6 million American adults (>1 in 3) have 1 or more types of cardiovascular disease. Of these, 40.4 million are estimated to be 60 years of age.
Average age of first heart attack is 64.5 years for men and 70.3 years for women.
One in three U.S. adults has high blood pressure.
In adults, total cholesterol levels of 240 mg/dL or higher are considered high risk.
Levels from 200 to 239 mg/dL are considered borderline-high risk.
For ages 6574 10.9% of men and 24.2% of women have high cholesterol.
Among people ages 5564, 79.7% of men and 69.6% of women are overweight
or obese, defined as a BMI (body mass index) of 25.0 kg/m2 and higher.
Of the estimated 18.3 million Americans with physician-diagnosed diabetes,
about 8.3 million are male.
In part because women have heart attacks at older ages than men do, theyre
more likely to die from them within a few weeks.
More than one in three female adults has some form of cardiovascular disease
(CVD).
To improve cardiovascular health and control heart disease risk factors, follow a diet
low in saturated fat and get plenty of aerobic exercise. Aerobic exercise includes brisk
walking, swimming, cycling and running. To maintain current heart health, aerobic
exercise should be done three times per week and twenty minutes each time. To
improve and maximize heart health, aim for thirty to sixty minutes of aerobic exercise
most days per week (5-6 days). Aerobic exercise should be done at an intensity of a
breathy conversation. Breathing hard enough to prevent talking is too intense. Easy
conversation means effort needs to be increased.
Cardiovascular disease is the number one killer. Lets take the month of February to
improve our cardiovascular health through exercise and proper diet.
