This chapter provides an overview of NE5000E cluster.
Issue 01 (2011-10-15)
1 NE5000E Cluster
A single NE5000E consists of only one CLC and supports a maximum interface capacity
of 1.28 Tbit/s. .
CCC-0, which is also called a back-to-back (BTB) system, consists of two CLCs and
supports a maximum interface capacity of 2.56 Tbit/s. .
CCC-2 consists of two CCCs and eight CLCs. The number of CLCs is determined by actual
requirements and cannot be more than eight.
1 NE5000E Cluster
Upgradable and congestion-free switching fabric, with the switching capacity at the Tbit/
s level
Separation of control channels and service channels to ensure unblocked control channels

Each channel supplies power for specific boards. The first channel supplies power for the boards
in the yellow area, the second channel supplies power for the boards in the blue area, and the
third channel supplies power for the boards in the grey area.
The three channels work independently. For example, if only the first channel is connected, only
the boards in the yellow area are powered on.
Two power modules work in load balancing mode. If the first power input of one power module
becomes faulty, the fist power input of the another power module supplies power for the boards
in the yellow area.
Appearance
The DC power modules of the NE5000E work in 1+1 backup mode. The DC power modules
are located behind the plastic panel, and provide distributed DC power supply to the system.
The power modules adopt the three-channel power supply method and the partitioned power
supply mode. Each of the power modules inputs three channels of 48 V DC power for different
modules.
The 48 V DC power module is 3 U (133.35 mm or 5.25 in.) high. Figure 2-5 shows the
appearance of a power supply module.

1. Fan module
The NE5000E draws air from the front and exhausts air from the back. This helps heat dissipation
in the board insertion area. The system draws air for heat dissipation. Figure 2-12 shows air
flows.
Issue 01 (2011-10-15)
19
2 NE5000E CLC
When the ambient temperature is 27C (80.6F) or below, fans rotate at a fixed low speed
(60% of the maximum rotational speed), which meets the heat dissipation requirement of
the system with standard configuration.
When the ambient temperature is between 27C (80.6F) and 45C (113F), the speed of
fans is raised little by little without sharp increase in noise.
When the ambient temperature is above 45C (113F), fans rotate at high speed (100% of
the maximum rotational speed) to meet the heat dissipation requirements.

In a single chassis system, 16 switching planes are located evenly on four SFUs (each SFU
holding four switching planes). One switching plane can switch data between 16 line cards.
In a BTB system, 16 switching planes are located evenly on eight SFEs (each SFE holding two
switching planes). One switching plane can switch data between 32 line cards.
Issue 01 (2011-10-15)
33
2 NE5000E CLC
In a cluster, one switching plane is located on both the SFE and the SFU simultaneously. There
are a total of 16 switching planes, and one switching plane can switch data between up to 1024
line cards.
Therefore, different product forms (single chassis system, BTB system, and cluster) adopt
different switching fabric units to meet the actual service requirements. A single chassis system
can use both the SFU and SFE, whereas the BTB system and the cluster can only use the SFE.
The NE5000E has a total of 16 switching planes for data switching between line cards. Each
traffic pair can choose multiple paths, giving the device much extensibility. In a BTB system,
the two chassis are connected through high-speed optical fibers, which ensures that traffic is
forwarding free of congestion.
One chassis has four SFUs/SFEs working with 3+1 redundancy.
2.5.2 SFEB
This section describes the functions, panel, interfaces, and technical specifications of an SFEB.
An SFEB is developed based on an old NE5000E chassis and provides multiple switching planes.
With SFEBs, a single NE5000E can be expanded from 2.56 Tbit/s to 5.12 Tbit/s (bidirectional).

Route calculation: All routing protocol packets are sent by the forwarding engine to the
MPU for processing. In addition, the MPU broadcasts and filters pickets, and downloads
routing policies from the policy server.
Outband communication between boards: The LAN switch modules integrated on the MPU
provide outband communications between boards. In this manner, communication between
MPUs, LPUs, and SFUs is controlled and maintained, and messages are exchanged.
Device management and maintenance: Devices are managed and maintained through the
management interfaces (for example, the serial interface) provided by the MPU.
Data configuration: The MPU stores configuration data, startup files, charging information,
upgrade software, and system logs.
Data storage: The MPU provides two interfaces for CF cards, which serve as mass storage
devices to store data files.
Reliability
The main control module, clock module, and LAN switch module of the MPU all work with 1
+1 hot backup, providing better system reliability.

Figure 3-18 Appearance of the 10-port 1000Base-X-SFP optical interface LPU
Application
The 1000Base-X-SFP optical interface LPU can:
l
Support Eth-Trunk.
Provide high-density interfaces that can be bound to provide required bandwidth for service
expansion without increasing investment.
Provides PMD sublayer functions in compliance with IEEE 802.3-2002 and supports
1000Base-SX and 1000Base-LX.
Stores and searches the production information on the LPU such as the board type and the
board components.
Based on the hierarchical structure, the 1000Base-X-SFP optical interface LPU is logically
divided into the service control plane and the packet forwarding plane. In this way, coupling
ratio and complexity between modules are decreased and reliability is improved.
The service control plane uses the universal CPU and the packet forwarding plane uses the NP
or the ASIC.

4.6.1 Introduction
The common SRU/MPU
The clock cable is used to connect the NE5000E with the clock interface of the external
equipment. With the cable, the NE5000E can receive two channels of 2.048 MHz or 2.048 Mbit/
s synchronous clocks provided by the upstream device. It can also offer two channels of 2.048
MHz or 2.048 Mbit/s synchronous clock signals to the downstream device.
One end of the clock cable uses the SMB connector that is connected to the clock interface on
the MPU and the other end is connected to the external clock equipment.
The clock cable has two types:
l

RS232,two channels of DCLS clock signals. It can also offer 2 Mbit/s clock signals,2 MHz clock
signals, clock signals of combining 1 PPS and ASCII,clock signals of combining 1 PPS and
RS232,two channels of DCLS clock signals.
One end of the clock cable uses the SMB/RJ45 connector that is connected to the clock interface
on the SRU/MPU and the other end is connected to the external clock equipment.
SMB connector is used along with the 75ohm Coaxial cable. RJ45 connector is used along with
the 120ohm relay cable.
NOTE
The wire sequence of the relay cable used as a clock cable is different from that used as a common Ethernet
cable.

The 10G XFP multi-mode optical transceiver supports two types of multi-mode optical fibers
with different cores. Table C-12 lists the relationship between the core, the modal/bandwidth,
and the transmission distance. During configuration, the length of optical fibers is restricted by
the transmission distance. In addition, the optical fiber with the 50-um core and 2000-MHz*km
modal/bandwidth is a special type. If this type of optical fibers are required, you need to purchase
it additionally.

When installing an optical module, force it into position. If a crack sound is heard or a slight
tremor is felt, it indicates that the latch boss is secured. When the latch boss is not secured,
the connecting finger is unstably connected to the connector on the board, and the link may
become Up. On the condition that the optical module tremors or collides with another
object, however, the optical module will be loosened or the optical signals will be
temporarily cut off.
When inserting the optical module, make sure that the tab is closed. (At this time, the latch
boss locks the optical module.) After the optical module is inserted, try pulling it out to see
if it is installed in position. If the optical module cannot be pulled out, it is secured.
Clean tissues must be prepared for the deployment on site. You need to clean the optical
connector before inserting it in the receptacle. This protects the receptacle against the
contamination on the end surface of the optical connector.
NOTE
Use at least three cleaning tissues. Wipe the end of an optical connector horizontally in one direction, and
then move the connector end to the unused part of the cleaning tissue to continue. Generally, one cleaning
tissue can be used once for cleaning an optical connector.
To prevent contamination, the optical module should be covered with either a dust cap or
an optical connector.
Cover an optical module with a dust cap
Issue 01 (2011-10-15)
187
D Appendix D transceiver
Lay the optical fibers on the Optical-fiber Distribution Frame (ODF) or coil them up in a
fiber management tray. Make sure that the optical fibers are not squeezed.
If a receptacle or an optical connector has not been used for a long time and not covered
with a dust cap, you should clean it before using it. A cotton swab is used to clean a
receptacle, and a cleaning tissue is used to clean an optical connector.
NOTE
During the cleaning process, insert the cotton swab and turn it slowly in the receptacle. Do not use too
much strength, because the receptacle may be damaged.
Issue 01 (2011-10-15)
188
D Appendix D transceiver
If optical signals are lost during the operation of a device, use the preceding method to
clean the receptacle or the optical connector. In this manner, the possibility of contamination
can be excluded.
When using an OTDR to test the connectivity or the attenuation of optical signals,
disconnect the optical connector from the optical module. Otherwise, the optical module
is probably burnt.
When performing a self-loop test, use an optical attenuator. Do not loosen the optical
connector instead.
It is required that a long-distance optical module input optical power smaller than 7 dBm.
If the input optical power is larger than 7 dBm, you need to add an optical attenuator. For
example, if the transmiting optical power is X dBm and the optical attenuation is Y dB, the
receiving optical power is X-Y, which must be smaller than 7dBm (X-Y<7 dBm).
Other precautions
l
The optical connector should be horizontally inserted in the receptacle to avoid damages
to the receptacle.
Mixed use of multi-mode and single-mode optical fibers is prohibited. Otherwise, faults
such as signal loss may occur.

E Glossary
Glossary
A
Asynchronizatio
n
Asynchronization does not use the exact data signals timed by the clock.
The signals have different frequencies and phases. The asynchronizatioin
usually encapsulates the bits into the control flag, which specifies the
beginning and end of the bits.
D
DCE
DRAM
DTE
Data terminal equipment is a user device composing the UNI. The DTE
accesses the data network through the DCE equipment (for example,
model) and usually uses the clock signals produced by DCE.
