CASE HISTORY

aXcelerate Telemetry Service Provided Industry-leading

Data Rates to Improve Drilling and Operational Efficiencies
Location: Gulf of Mexico
Results
Improved drilling and operational efficiency
Provided quality, real-time data at rates up

to 40 bps
Adapted to LCM necessity as demanded by

changing well conditions

Successfully led the operator to well TD

Background and challenges

Obtain reliable surveys in and near casing

The aXcelerate service has a downlink configurable pulser with two telemetry modes and can operate at different carrier
frequencies to enable decoding of two different downhole signals while ensuring optimal data transmission.

Previous attempts by an operator in the Gulf of

Mexico to drill its well had been riddled with difficult
drilling conditions that culminated in uncontrolled
loss of returns.
The operator approached Baker Hughes, which
recommended a bottomhole assembly (BHA)
incorporating its aXcelerate high-speed mud-pulse
telemetry service with the Baker Hughes OnTrak
measurement-while-drilling (MWD)/logging-whiledrilling (LWD) integrated service.
The BHA provided directional and formation
evaluation services in a tandem, dual-pulser
configuration with an industry-leading gyroscope
(gyro) company.
Because gyros are not susceptible to interference
from magnetic fields, they provide highly accurate
data in areas where magnetic interference is
an issue.
Once the magnetic interference cleared, the
operator was able to switch to faster Baker Hughes

MWD surveys. This eliminated the need for

wireline gyros, and, in turn, improved overall
drilling productivity.
The ability of the aXcelerate service to
accommodate variable drilling fluid flow rates,
handle increased lost-circulation material (LCM)
limits, and operate within different user-defined
bandwidths provided the operator with an improved
ability to adapt to changing drilling environments.
The service also enabled the operator to transmit
high-quality data regardless of well conditions.

Baker Hughes Solution

aXcelerate high-speed mud-pulse

telemetry service
OnTrak MWD/LWD integrated service

Though the operator only expected a data rate of

3.9 bps, the aXcelerate service was able to provide
real-time data at an average rate of 30 bps,
reaching rates as high as 40 bps.
This data rate, unmatched by competitors, gave
the operator industry leading, real-time data
resolution for formation evaluation, drilling
dynamics, and decision making, leading to a
successfully drilled well.
