Yoga FEAtURE

Tony, who has since been credited as

the founder/developer of The Emotional
Makeover, firmly believes that human beings
have tremendous potential. His perceptive
abilities help bring to light all those special,
obscured qualities that lie deep within
each of us. Asana Journal spoke to him
exclusively to find out more, and how yoga,
spiritual healing and meditation play a huge
role in his life, and the life of his clients he
works with today.
1. How were you first
introduced to yoga,
spiritual healing and
meditation, and what
were your original
thoughts?
Born, raised and having spent the
first 40 years of my life in India,
yoga, healing and meditation were
part of my life and family culture. My
first teacher was my grandfather, a
deeply spiritual soul and a doctor by
profession. The rest has been a self
taught journey.

2. How important is
an active, healthy
lifestyle to you?
It is the only way to live. The opposite
would be to live an inactive and
unhealthy life, a sorry existence.

to help individuals to transform their

emotional blocks into pure positive
energy. It is a unique method to
help individuals find balance and
happiness and thus evolve spiritually.
Through the guided spiritual
meditation, I help my clients to
reconnect with themselves. It is
tailor made to their needs. The key
is to help them awaken their inner
soul power. Without meditation
there would be no soul connection.
Without a connection there would be
no healing.

4. What types of yoga

would you suggest
individuals practice
while working with
you in other areas of
finding their creative
energy?

3. With your line of

work, you take people
on guided spirit
meditation Why is
this key to healing the
soul?

It depends on the age, physical and

mental state and clients ability.
Emotional healing requires an
individualized guided approach
to help the individual transform
their pain and help them release
the emotional blocks. This
transformation is a rebirth and a
happier new beginning.

This question captures a small

part of the service, which I call
the Emotional Makeover. This is a
unique service I have created in order

lives?

types/styles of
yoga, meditation or
spiritual healing on
your travels?
Each culture/country/region has
taken their own ancient teachings
and created beautiful methods. Be
it chanting, dancing, meditating or
healing the modalities may change
according to local customs and
beliefs but the journey is the same
going within. I have learnt from
many cultures. I try to incorporate
different teachings in my work.

6. What types of yoga

do you practice?
I follow ancient traditional East
Indian methods. I do simple
meditation and chanting.

7. What has been your

greatest challenge
when it comes to your
practice?
The challenges have been:
(a) Clients fear of change and
therefore resistance to change
(b) Many people are confused
between thoughts and feelings.
Helping them to disentangle one
from the other.
(c) Many people are emotionally
numb. They barely connect with
their feelings. Body functions and
stressful thinking turns individuals
into efficient robots. To help these
clients feel their emotions and
help them evolve spiritually, a
very delicate and gentle approach
is needed. It is almost like taking
away a lid or a stone that they have
placed on their feelings. This gentle

and delicate approach requires great

expertise and patience.

8. Why do you
feel meditation is
important to your
every day lifestyle
and who you are as an
individual?
Meditation calms, recharges and
helps one to let go. If we wish
to grow- we must let go! In my
experience, the clam and peace
meditation brings is of paramount
importance in life and perhaps few
other practices could be as effective.

9. What advice would

you like to share with
other practitioners
based on your
personal experience
that are looking at
getting into yoga and/
or spiritual healing?
A lot of books and materials are
available on the physical aspect of
yoga and meditation. Getting into a
deep silence and being able to empty
the mind is perhaps the simplest yet
most difficult lesson to learn and
practice. Most people who do not
start or give up yoga are people who
have the mindset that they do not
have time. Finding a few minutes
anywhere at anytime during the day
is all one needs. The mantra is just
continue

10. How have you

seen your Emotional
Makeover techniques

asaNa Magazine | December 2016

Clients hurting from bereavement of

loved ones have felt calm. Those who
have had trouble connecting with
meaningful romantic relationships
have found true love. Many clients
who were blaming and hurting
themselves are now able to love
themselves and evolve spiritually.
Most clients have been able to tap into
and follow their intuition. Intimacy
problems in relationships have
been resolved and my clients have
achieved a new bliss. Many of my
clients have permitted themselves to
live their natural life path instead of
allowing others to dictate them.

11. Where is your

favorite place to
meditate both on your
own and with clients?
Whether for my clients or myself my
favorite place to meditate is in my
healing room/ office.

12. What are your

future dreams
and goals both
professionally and
personally?
The Emotional Makeover, which I
have created, has been a pioneering
effort. I wish to continue to learn
more deeply about human feelings
and emotions. I always strive for
quality in my work and wish to
improve constantly. Stating very
humbly, I consider each client my
guru because I have learned from
each one and I wish to continue to
learn from him or her both personally
and professionally.

13. If you could

change one thing
in the world, what
would it be?
In the world of emotions I have found
loneliness is the biggest problem. If I
could eradicate that feeling from this
world where people meet, exchange,
transact and benefit but sadly dont
connect emotionally, I would love to
change this.

Yoga PhIlOSOPhY

editation has become a buzzword

these days and is prescribed as a
multi-purpose drug for enhancing
personal wellbeing. The term is now
being used interchangeably for
breathing exercises, yogasanas, contemplation
and a variety of activities. At the Brahmakaumaris,
however, meditation refers specifically to Rajyoga,
an ancient Indian technique that empowers us by
elevating our thoughts and consciousness. As our
inner world changes, it has a ripple effect on our
mental and physical health, relationships, social
scenario and even our natural environment.
What is Rajayoga?
Yoga means connection or link, and Rajayoga implies the highest connection
that of the soul with the supreme soul through the power of thought. Rajayoga
simply means remembering God with Love by means of correct understanding.
Remembering a near one comes naturally to us, that is why Rajayoga is also known
as easy yoga.

obstacle-free. As our thoughts focus
on Him, we are able to draw from His
unlimited reserve of wisdom, purity,
peace, love, happiness, power and
bliss.

Rajayoga, step by step

In a usual Rajyoga session, we
employ our subtle faculties
mind and intellect to change our
personality traits. We sit in silence,
consciously create elevated thoughts
through our mind, then visualise
them through our intellect. This is
followed by inner experience that
triggers self-transformation. The
more our concentration, that is unity
between the mind and intellect, the
deeper our experience.

Yoga INSPIRAtION

Over the years, Ive come to appreciate the immense value of fellowship on my own journey;
not only for the exchange of inspiration and support but also for its power of unified intention.
Ive had the good fortune of practicing Yoga and meditation with many dear friends but
primarily with my husband and partner on the path. Together we encourage each other through
regular shared practice. I believe it is this unified vision that has not only made for a happy and
harmonious married life but also for increasing our love and respect for one another over our
21 years together. When people gather their energies together with the purpose of conscious
evolution 1 + 1 can equal 11!
There are many sadhanas (spiritual practices) which easily lend themselves to cooperative
effort such as practicing asanas, mudras, pranayama, Yoga relaxation & visualization, japa,
meditation, various pujas, study of scripture like the Yoga Sutras or The Bhagavad Gita, mantra
recitation or spiritual chanting (kirtan), planning and preparing sattvic meals together, doing a
detox or juicing program, creating or joining in community seva (selfless service). Essentially,
any practice that generates positive qualities such as compassion, wisdom, harmony and true

Positive actions naturally make a person feel

kEEpInG IT REal:
Relating to someone through a sincere desire for
conscious evolution keeps the communication

Sadhana gives us an opportunity to nurture our

slow down, share revelations, exchange wisdom

Real connection comes from the kind of

actions that honor, nurture and expand our

this learning journey of life, our own growth
will naturally unfold because all these sacred
practices build insight and understanding - key
attributes for real connection with others. Like
a mandala, love begins with a center point and

of beauty. Shared practice is not codependence

like our Messiah-like political leaders, have
a heavy hand. They employ the carrot and

constructed.

Savasana is practiced at the end of yoga exercise classes. Its a simple thing.
You lie down on your back on the mat with your arms at your sides, close your
eyes, and breathe naturally. When you surrender to Santa and the Savior you
agree to live by their rules. When you surrender to Savasana its just you just
as you are, not as what anybody else says you should be.
Savasana only works when youre being honest about it.
You dont have to be an honest man or woman to live in the world of Santa
and the Savior. You only have to do what you need to do to get along and get
what you want. Its OK to lie to yourself. Who cares about the spirit of the
thing?

In the making of the modern age of mass media, mass merchandising, and

s I continue to share yoga, I often encounter

situations where I need to emphasize how yoga
is different from exercise. Sometimes I am even
asked point blank and defiantly as to how doing a
back bend in yoga class makes it any different from
doing it in the gym as part of routine work out, arent they
both exercises, after all? I am reminded of an old video clip of
David Swenson which I watched years back where he does a
deep forward bend and asks : Any gymnast can do this? So is
every gymnast a yogi?. He then shows a not so deep forward
bend but shows immense absorption and breath awareness as
he takes this posture and then says the first scenario of deep

not be yoga, but the second
scenario of deep absorption
and breath awareness in the
posture despite its lack of
depth and even bent knees
is yoga. I always use this
example in my class.
I am grateful for the
receptivity and openness of
the participants in my class
who have begun to appreciate
this difference. They have
begun to see yoga as a

difference #1.

When we

practice yoga we are trying to bring

the heart, mind and body into
alignment in such a way that all
three are focused on a single point,
and not each running in a different
direction. This creates integrity in
our system. From being a crowd
within we become an individual
being. Now unity can prevail in the
system. When the heart, mind and
body run in different directions it
makes us chaotic within and at a loss
of yoga. And yoga means harmony.
In the gym we could be listening to
music, watching TV, chatting with
friend and doing our back bend. This
back bend cannot be called yoga
because the body is doing the back
bend but the mind is not doing the
same thing, and the involvement of

Yoga this Sunday at 9am! There is no cover charge.

Welcoming the Delaware church for beginning the New Year with yoga, Hindu statesman Rajan Zed,
in a statement in Nevada today, urged all the Delaware public schools to introduce multi-beneficial
yoga programs in their curriculums.
Yoga, referred as a living fossil, was a mental and physical discipline, for everybody to share and

President of Universal Society of Hinduism, noted.
Rajan Zed further said that yoga, was a world heritage and liberation powerhouse to be utilized by all.
According to Patanjali who codified it in Yoga Sutra, yoga was a methodical effort to attain perfection,
through the control of the different elements of human nature, physical and psychical.
According to US National Institutes of Health, yoga may help one to feel more relaxed, be more
flexible, improve posture, breathe deeply, and get rid of stress. According to 2016 Yoga in America
Study, about 37 million Americans (which included many celebrities) now practice yoga; and yoga is
strongly correlated with having a positive self image. Yoga was the repository of something basic in
the human soul and psyche, Zed added.

aldness and dandruff are among the most

pervasive hair and scalp problems. Hair loss may
be either the result of illness or a normal genetic

Dandruff excessive scaling of the scalp affects
more than 50 percent of the population. It may
be due to stress or a chronic or recurrent skin

is infection by Pytyrosporum ovale fungus. This fungus is found
naturally on the scalp but some people are more affected by it
than others. It feeds on the skins natural oils and causes irritation

About Thirumandiram by Thirumoolar

A Seminal yogic text by Siddha Thirumoolar. The Tirumandiram consists of nine
chapters called Thandirams of different length with varying subject-matter. Calling the
different chapters of the work as Thandiram is not to be found in any other classical
Tamil work except in the Thirumandiram. This is a sacred monumental work of
philosophical and spiritual wisdom rendered in verse form. It is a seminal work and is
the first treatise in Tamil that details the various approach of Ashtanga Yoga, Tantra
and Saiva Siddhanta
