Years of Sports vs Injuries Suffered

For this study my partner, and I collected data from 50 people to see the relationship
between the number of years in sports an athlete has played and how many injuries the
athletes have suffered over the years.

The graph my partner, and I created from our research is the number of years
that an individual participated in sports, compared to the number of injuries that that
individual had suffered. My partner, and I collected our data by doing a sampling of the
junior, and senior classes. We picked every other person to survey until we reached or
goal of 50 people. In our graph you can tell that the data is presented in a positive

slope. This is true because of the way the line is going up, and because the numbers
are all positive. My partner, and I have also notice that our graph is moderate graph,
because the R isn't high enough to be high, and its not low enough to be low, its right in
the middle.
The explanatory variable from the data that my partner, and I collected, we
decided that its the number of years that the individuals were playing sports. We
picked this as our explanatory variable because it is the activity of playing the sport,
which causes the injuries the athletes suffered. The response variable of our data is the
other part. The injuries that the athletes have suffered, we decided that this is the
response variable because its the result of the explanatory variable. AKA: the number
of years in sports.
The next fact my partner, and I found from our data is the correlation coefficient r.
The correlation coefficient r is the variable that tells how correlated your data is in your
graph. My partner, and I to find the correlation r we put all our data into a calculator, did
the calculations and found that our correlation r is 0.53. Which again would only make
our graph a moderate correlation.
The next information that my partner, and I got from our data is the x and y. To
find the x, and y, my partner and I found the average of our data. The x, which is the
number of years people have played sports was 8.4. The y value we did the same
thing, we found the average of the number of injuries people had well playing sports.
My partner, and I found that the y value is 3.1. When you plot (8,3) onto the graph you
can tell that it lands right on the line going through the graph.
The influential point that my partner, and I had that could've changed our graph is
the point (6,11). This point could of changed the data that we collected because the
number of sports is only 6 years, but there are 11 injuries. Which is had largest number
of injuries someone suffered.
The coefficient of determination, or r squared can help you find the % that is
explained in your graph, and the part of your graph thats not explained. This number
will always between 0 and 1. When found by my partner, and I we took our r value, and
squared it. We found that our coefficient of determination or r squared was 0.281. Then
now that we found the r squared we are able to find the explained, and unexplained
parts of our data. My partner, and I after doing the calculations, found that our
explained part of our data is only 28.1%. Then our unexplained data was 71.9%.
Some of the lurking variables that could of effect my partners and my data could
be that not every sport people play you get injuries in. For example, the sport of
basketball or football could have a lot more injuries than the sport of golf. Even though
someone could have played golf more years then someone else played football. The
person who plays football could have a lot more injuries.
If me or my partner added another point into our graph that was close to the
regression line, the line would not really move much or at all due to all the points we
have already. Extrapolation would be a different outcome. If we added a new point that

above all our other points the regression line would be pulled up slightly, but once again
the change would be very small and not really cause much of a problem.
Over all my partner, and I did our study about how the number of years in sport is
related to the number of injuries athletes had faced. After we collected all our data and
made it into a scatter plot, we notice that the correlation of the data is only moderate
related. Along to the graph only being moderate, we were also able to predict some of
the points of the graph with the equation (y= .37x + .11). This information that my
partner, and I found from our study could be helpful because it could help determine
what kind of sports people get more injuries in.
