Semester I

1. Mathematics (AM-1101):Introduction to Real Number System, the concept of Convergence of Sequences and Series and
various other properties and theorems. Sections of Differential Calculus including Continuity,
Limits, Maxima and Minima, Point of inflection. Topics of Integral Calculus and Calculus of
Vector-valued functions.

2. Physics (AP-1101):The syllabus of this course can be divided mainly into two sections- Classical Mechanics and
Quantum Mechanics. Introduction to Classical Mechanics and Lagrangian and Hamiltonian
functions and their applications. Further, Quantum Mechanics and its importance. In this section,
main stress is given on Schrdingers equations and Relativistic Quantum Mechanics.

3. Chemistry (AC-1101):This course covered all the three major sections of chemistry: Organic Chemistry, Physical
Chemistry, and Inorganic Chemistry. In Organic Chemistry, in-depth analysis of the types and
mechanisms of Substitution and Elimination reactions. In physical chemistry, Chemical Kinetics
and Photochemistry and in Inorganic Chemistry, students gain an insight on Co-ordination
Compounds and Titrimetric Analysis.

4. Engineering Mechanics (ME-1101):The syllabus for this course included basic mechanical principles. It dealt with solving real life
problems related to kinematics and dynamics of rigid bodies. Concepts involving trusses
(cantilever beams), friction, moment, energy balance, force balance, free body diagrams. The
course was intended to inculcate and develop a pragmatic approach towards solving real world
challenges.

5. Computer Programming & Graphics (AM-1103):The course provided an introduction to basic algorithms and syntax of ANSII C language. Basic
outlook towards programming. Concepts of functions, data types, operators, keywords and other
basics of programming. ANSII C language to be explored in detail. Basic concepts of graphics.

6. Engineering Drawing (ME-1301):The concept and techniques of Engineering Drawing are introduced through this course.
Imagination and drawing of various types of projections of different views are taught. The topic
of Development of Surfaces is also taken up.

7. Physics Laboratory (AP-1301):The Physics Practical focused on the Mechanical aspects of Physics. Various experiments are
performed which included the determination of surface tension, viscosity, specific rotation of
cane sugar, moment of inertia, acceleration due to gravity, Youngs modulus etc. Also
experiments are performed to verify the laws of conservation of momentum and energy in an
elastic collision.

8. Computer Laboratory (CL-1301):Introduction to various programming algorithms to solve different problems. Some of those
problems include creation of C program for sorting a series, checking for prime nos., palindrome
nos. , Fibonacci series, swapping of nos., arrays, dealing with pointers, uses and applications of
user defined functions, file management and graphics. All the above algorithms covered basic
principles covered in the theory counterpart of the subject mainly, different data types, and
conditional and looping statements, arrays, pointers and user defined functions.

Semester II
1. Mathematics (AM-1202):The course of Mathematics covers three broad disciplines, namely
1. Linear algebra: It included the concepts of group, ring, field, vector space, subspace, linear,
combination, basis and dimension.
2. Complex numbers: This section included topics like limit, differentiability, analytic function,
harmonic functions, residue theorem, poles, and Cauchys inequality.
3. Differential equation: This section covered concepts of differential equations including their
order and degree, exact differential equation, solving linear differential equations with constant
coefficients, method of variation of parameters.

2. Physics (AP-1202):This course is divided in two parts, namely Electromagnetic waves: This section covered Biot
savart law, amperes law, maxwells equations and Laplace equations. Optics: This section
includes reflection and refraction of light, polarization, diffraction, Youngs double slit
experiment, fraunhofer diffraction and Newtons rings.

3. Chemistry (AC-1202):Organic Chemistry


In the organic chemistry section SN1, SN2, SNi, Elimination reaction, mechanism of E1, E2, SN1,
SN2, SNi, E1CB, Factors affecting rates of reaction, solvents polar, non-molar, protic, aprotic,
aromaticity, reaction on aromatic compounds, oils, polymers, soaps and detergents are covered.
Inorganic Chemistry
In this section different types of titration, namely

Coordination compounds & Organometallic compounds their properties, synthesis and


applications.

4. Thermodynamics (ME-1202):Work and heat transfer pdV, displacement work, heat transferrin system. First law of
thermodynamics closed system, energy, enthalpy, heat capacity, isolated system, flow process,
mass and energy balance. Second law of thermodynamics heat engine, heat pump, Carnots
theorem, efficiency. Entropy and energy entropy generation, adiabatic work, entropy change,
quality of energy, energy in closed and steady flow system.
PVT Relations of Pure Fluids Graphical, Tabular and Mathematical representation;
Generalized compressibility chart; Generalized EOS; Thermodynamic Potentials; Maxwell
Relations, Thermodynamic Property Relations, Thermodynamic properties of real gases,
Multicomponent mixtures, Properties of solutions, Phase Equilibrium (VLE, LLE, VLLE),
Review of Thermochemistry; Chemical reaction equilibria. Properties of pure substance steam
tables. Cycle rankine, carnot, otto, diesel, dual, Brayton, refrigeration cycle.

5. Professional Communication (PC-1201):This course included the following units

6. Environmental Studies (ES-1201):This course covered the following topics: - Environmental studies: A multidisciplinary studies,
importance of environment, need for public awareness, Natural resources: forest, mineral, water
resources, Ecosystem: concept, food web, food chain, ecological pyramids, types of ecosystems,
Biodiversity and its conservation: genetic, species, ecosystem diversity, biological classification
of India, India as a mega-diversity loss of habitat, Environmental pollution, Social issues and the
environment.

7. Physics Laboratory (AP-1402):The Physics Practical focused on the Electromagnetic and Optical aspects of Physics. Various
experiments are performed which included the calculation of wavelength of monochromatic light
by Newtons ring experiment, Fresnel biprism, Nodal distance by Nodal slide , refractive index
of prism by spherometer, wavelength of light by minimum deviation method , Conversion of
galvanometer to ammeter and voltmeter , study of variation of magnetic field on the axis of
Helmholtz galvanometer and use of potentiometer to compare e.m.f of two cells, internal
resistance and comparison of two resistances.

8. Chemistry Laboratory (AC-1401):In this practical course the chemical changes and behavior of different chemical species and
reactions are observed. These include determination of free fatty acids in a given oil sample,
Critical solution temperature, determination of order of reaction , various titrations including
thermometric, complexometric and redox titrations and determination of free chlorine in a given
water sample .

1. Numerical Methods (AM-2102A):Systems of Linear and Non-Linear Algebraic Equations: Successive Substitution, NewtonRaphson, Eigenvalues and Eigenvectors of Matrices, Interpolation, Solutions of ODEs (IVP):
Runge Kutta, Multistep Methods, Gears algorithm, Stiffness and Stability of algorithms, ODE
(BVPs) and PDEs: Finite Difference, Finite Elements, Shooting Methods.

2. Electronics and Instrumentation (EC-2102A):Introduction to p-n diode and its applications, transistors, their behaviours under different
conditions, and their use as voltage regulators and rectifiers and amplifies, binary number
systems, Boolean algebra, gates, clocks and counters , sensors ,actuator ,ADC , DAC , Multi
vibrators .

3. Materials Science (CH-2101):It incorporates topics of crystalline states their properties and defects, mechanical properties,
various methods involved in strengthening of metals, phase diagrams involved in ferrous and
non-ferrous alloys, study of ceramics mainly glass and clay and their fabrication.

4. Fluid-Flow Operations (CH-2102):This subject consists of fluid mechanics specifically, equation of fluid flow for compressive and
incompressible liquids and flow past immersed bodies. Review of Navier-Stokes (NS)
equations; non-dimensionalization of NS equations; introduction to turbulence; analogies;
correlations for fluid flow Short introduction to non-Newtonian flows, Engineering Bernoulli
Equation; f vs. NRe charts; K factors and equivalent lengths for various fittings; hydraulic
diameter; Head vs. Q plots of centrifugal pumps; NPSH, cavitation and priming; pipeline system
design including pseudo-steady state approximation; flow measurements; compressors and
blowers. Compressible flows in conduits, Mixing and Agitation: Power consumption; mixing
times; scale-up, Characterization of solids; fundamentals of two-phase flow; flow through
packed beds and in fluidized beds (pressure drops, loading and flooding); pneumatic and
hydraulic transportation. Filtration, Centrifuges and cyclones (including some recent models).

5. Process Calculations (CH-2103):Guidelines for Problem Solving; Review of Basic concepts Process variables & properties,
Degree of Freedom, Steady State Material Balances in non reacting systems and reacting
system, Recycle & purge, elemental vs. species balance, combustion of fossil fuels, Steady State
Material balances in Multiphase systems, Steady State Energy Balances in non-reacting &
reacting systems, De-Coupled & coupled mass & energy balances, Calculations for network of
units with recycle & bypass, Process Flow sheeting with sequential modular calculations,
Unsteady State Balances.

6. Chemical Engineering Thermodynamics (CH-2104):This subject dealt with thermodynamics systems involved in chemical in chemical engineering
processes. It comprises equation of state for ideal and real substances, their residual and excess
properties. Properties of mixtures and their components and various models involved in studying
them, vapour liquid equilibrium, chemical equilibrium and other phase equilibrium. Classical
thermodynamics of phase equilibria: Thermodynamic properties from volumetric data: Nature of
intermolecular forces, Theory of corresponding states; Fugacities in gas mixtures and liquid
solutions; gas solubilities; High pressure equilibria; Equilibrium criteria; Gibbs Duhem relation;
Energy minimum principle; Thermodynamic potentials; Stability and phase Transition.
Statistical Thermodynamics: Statistical mechanics of ensembles; Estimation of Thermodynamic
properties in Ideal gases, Estimation of equilibrium constant in reacting systems

7. Electronics & Instrumentation Laboratory (EC-2302A):Practical applications of most of the topics covered in ENI theory course including the behaviour
of p-n junction diode under varying voltage and current and the use of IC-741 as an inverting and
non-inverting amplifiers, adder and subtractor, also the use IC-555 as a digital clock. The
instruments like frequency generator and CRO.

8. Computer Applications Laboratory (CH-2301):Introduction to computational capability of software (e.g. EXCEL or MATHCAD) and solve and
come out with optimized solutions for various problems one can encounter in Chemical
Industries. Problems related to material and energy balance, solving a non linear equation,
graphical analysis of various statistical problems like the concentration profile for various
reactant components and products with time.

Semester IV
1. Mathematical Methods (AM-2202A):It gives idea of differential equations, integral transforms and their application, complex variable
and probability and statistics. More generally it describes us about Bessel functions, Legendre
and Hermite polynomials, Laplace transformation, Fourier transformation, conformal mapping,
Laplace equation in Cartesian and polar forms, probability distributions and their application.
Modelling, Vector Spaces, Matrices, Linear Operators, Initial Value Problem, Partial Differential
Equation, Sturm Louiville Theory, Separation of Variables, Greens Functions, Transform
Techniques, Nonlinear Equations, Continuation Methods, Bifurcation and Chaos.

2. Electrical Engineering (EE-2202A):This course incorporates a brief discussion about electrical circuits, electrical machines,
distribution of power and electrical measurement instruments. It basically discusses the circuit
solving techniques, transformer, DC machines, induction and synchronous machines, tariff
calculation, energy meter, ammeter, wattmeter and voltmeter.

3. Physico-Chemical Principles (CH-2201):This course includes phase stability, simple mixtures, ionic equilibria, electro-kinetic
phenomena, colloids, adsorption and spectroscopy. These topics help in understanding different
phase equilibria, partial molar quantities, electrochemical cells, chromatography, NMR
spectroscopy and Raman spectroscopy.

4. Fluid Particle Mechanics & Mechanical Operations (CH-2202):This course has been designed for giving insight of different characteristics of solid particles like
shape, size, size reduction, separation, handling etc. In detail it discusses about screening,
crushing, sedimentation, thickeners, flow through porous media, fluidization, flow through
packed bed, solid storage and transport and mixing of solids and pastes.

5. Mass Transfer Operations- I (CH-2203):This is an introductory course for mass transfer which basically discusses about molecular and
eddy diffusion, interphase mass transfer, gas-liquid contactors, gas absorption and stripping,
humidification and dehumidification, drying and crystallisation.

6. Heat Transfer Operations (CH-2204):It describes about mechanism of heat transfer like conduction, convection and radiation, heat
transfer with phase change (condensation, boiling, reboilers and vaporisers), heat exchangers and
evaporators. Heat conduction, Convective heat transfer (laminar & turbulent), wet-bulb and
adiabatic saturation, Boiling: pool and convective boiling, correlations, Condensation: film-wise
and drop-wise condensation, correlations, Radiation: thermal radiation, radiation properties, view
factors, heat exchange between surfaces, Heat exchanger design: Shell-and-tube, compact
exchangers, reboiler, and condenser, Evaporators: type of equipment, single and multiple effect
evaporators, Crystallization: phase equilibria, crystal growth, types of equipment, design,
Aspen/Matlab should be used wherever possible.

7. Electrical Engineering Laboratory (EE-2402A):Measurement of internal resistance of voltmeter, Open and short circuit test: These two tests are
performed on a transformer to determine (a) equivalent circuit of transformer (b) voltage
regulation of transformer (c) efficiency of transformer. Verification of maximum power transfer
theorem: In this experiment current voltages are calculated for different values of impedance and
plotted. Load test on a single phase transformer. Study of the characteristics of a separately
excited DC generator. Measurement of speed of DC series motor as a function of load torque,
Three phase power measurement by two wattmeter method, R-L-C circuit, Star and delta
connection.

8. Chemical & Instrumental Analysis Laboratory (CH-2401):Introduces students to the major concepts of instrumental analysis and to some of the
instrumental techniques most commonly used in analytical and bio analytical chemistry. It
emphasizes the use of modern, commercial instrumentation to perform quantitative and
qualitative analyses of the physical properties and chemical composition of samples. To
determine the available chlorine in Bleaching powder by iodometric titration method, Vitamin C
in Vitamin C tablet by iodometric titration method, nitrite in waste water by Spectrophometric
method, sulphate in sample by naphelometric method, percentage of manganese dioxide in
Pyrolusite by redox titration method, percentage of sodium hydroxide and sodium carbonate in
the commercial caustic soda by Acid-Base titration method, dissolved oxygen in waste water by

iodometric titration method, temporary (carbonate) and permanent (non-carbonates) hardness of


water by complexometric titration (EDTA) method, glucose in the given sample by
Dinitrosalicylic acid reagent (DNS) method, point of zero charge of activated charcoal by solid
activation method.

9. Fluid Flow & Mechanical Operations Laboratory (CH-2402):Introduction to fluid mechanics laboratory and design of experiments, including experiments on
flow patterns, velocity profile in an air pipe, wind tunnel calibration, draining of a tank, pipe
friction, drag forces, boundary- layer studies, falling-ball experiments, and measurements of
fluid properties, Orifice meter, Venturimeter meter, Frictional loss for flow through straight pipe
fittings, Characteristics of Centrifugal Pump, Water Fluidized Bed: determined the minimum
fluidization velocity, Air fluidized bed, Jar Mill: determined the overall energy efficiency and
theoretical effectiveness of Jar mill, Screen Analysis, Plate and Frame Filter & Sparkler Filter:
determined filter medium resistance and specific cake resistance for constant pressure runs,
Sedimentation: determination of sedimentation of the given sample and determination of the
different zones of settling and calculation of terminal velocity of the particles, Reynolds
Experiments: Through visual observation of laminar and turbulent flow, determination of the
lower and upper critical Reynolds number.

Semester V
1. Process Instrumentation (CH-3101):This course has incorporated the discussions about the process variables, process instrumentation
diagrams and symbols, static and dynamic characteristics of instruments, signal transmission,
converter, transducers, data acquisition system etc. Beside these it also discusses about the
principles, construction of instruments for the measurement, transmission, control/indication/
recording of process variables, final control element, and transducer.

2. Process Dynamics & Control (CH-3102):In this course, there is an account of basic theory underlying the various processes in transient
and different types of controllers. Process models, Linearization, Laplace transforms. Process
dynamics, Time delay, Feedback control, Instrumentation, Stability (Routh array & root locus),
Frequency response analysis (Bode and Nyquist plots), Design of feedback controllers, High
level control (Cascade, Smith predictor, feed forward, adaptive, inferential, ratio, override etc.),
MIMO systems, Digital control.

3. Energy Resources & Utilization (CH-3103):It discusses different types of fuels (solid, liquid and gaseous), nuclear energy, hydrogen
production and storage, solar, wind, tidal and geothermal energies. It also includes energy
conservation, energy audits and several environmental issues.

4. Chemical Reaction Engineering I (CH-3104):This course includes the analyses of batch reactor and flow reactors. Basic Concepts in Chemical
Kinetics, Collection and Analysis of Rate Data, Non elementary Homogeneous Reactions,
Isothermal Reactor Design, Design for Multiple Reactions in Isothermal Reactors, Non
isothermal Reactors, Non ideal flow, Catalysis, Kinetics of Catalytic Reactions , Diffusion and
Reaction in Porous Catalysts.

5. Chemical Technology I (CH-3105):It comprises the discussion of different industrial products as industrial gases (H2, O2, N2 and
Inert gases), sulphur chemicals, fertilisers, marine chemicals, chlor alkalis, ceramics, industrial
carbon and inorganic pigments. It simultaneously discusses about various advances and
challenges related to that industry.

6. Mass Transfer Operations II (CH-3106):Mass Transfer-II gives insight of various separation processes as distillation, leaching, liquidliquid extraction, adsorption and ion-exchange. Mass transfer equipment: continuous contact and
staged contact units for absorption, extraction, distillation, adsorption, humidification, drying,
Phase equilibria: phase diagrams, V-L-E, G-L-E, S-L-E; estimation of binary and
multicomponent phase equilibria, Single stage (steady state): binary and multicomponent, Single
stage unsteady state: (distillation, drying, adsorption [blow down]), Separations without reflux:
isothermal cases: stage contactor: McCabe -Thiele method, stage efficiency, matrix method,
Thomas method for solution, continuous contact (HTU, NTU), Separations without reflux: nonisothermal cases (absorption, adsorption, drying, humidification), numerical solutions,
Separations with reflux: distillation, extraction and adsorption, matrix method; continuous
contact, Membrane separation processes: fundamentals, introduction, different types of
processes, Design of gas-liquid, liquid-liquid contactor; staged and continuous contact,
Estimation of stage efficiencies, Short-cut methods for distillation. Aspen should be used as
much as possible.

7. Heat Transfer Laboratory (CH-3301):Experimental work in heat transfer lab covering: Measurement of thermal conductivity, Natural
and forced convection, Radiation, and Heat exchangers. Double pipe heat exchanger & Shell and
tube heat exchanger: To calculate the overall heat transfer coefficient both clean and dirt, Single

effect evaporator & Open pan evaporator: To calculate overall heat transfer coefficient for
condenser and evaporator, U-tube heat exchanger & Coil heater: To calculate the overall heat
transfer coefficient of it.

8. Energy Resources Laboratory (CH-3302):Determination of calorific value by Bomb method: To calculate calorific value of an oil sample.
Proximate analysis of coal: To calculate moisture content, ash content, fixed carbon content and
volatile matter. Determination of water content of oil sample by Dean Stark method: To separate
water and oil and measured the impurity. Determination of Reid vapour pressure of an oil
sample: Calculation of pressure with the help of standard instrument. Determination of kinematic
viscosity by Redwood viscometer No.-1, Determination of carbon residue of given oil sample by
Rams Bottom Apparatus. Evaluation of UL , FR , and in thermosymphonic mode of flow with
fixed input parameters using solar flat plate. Calculation of Flash point & fire point, ASTM
Distillation, Cloud point and pour point.

9. Mass Transfer laboratory (CH-3303):Solubility of Ternary Liquid System: To calculate the solubility and drawn triangular and
rectangular diagrams. Equilibrium and tie-line data for Ternary Liquid System, Vapour Liquid
Equilibrium: In this experiment vapour composition and residue composition was to be
calculated with help of refractometer. Solubility of Organic Compound: The solubility was found
out by mixing and then titrating the mixture. Packed Distillation Column: The HETP was to be
calculated with help of distillate and residue composition. Batch Distillation-Verification of
Rayleigh Law: In this experiment batch distillation of a mixture to be done and to calculate the
moles of distillate and residue theoretically and experimentally. Steam Distillation: In this
experiment a high boiling point liquid was to be evaporated with the help of carrier steam.
Drying Characteristics: Samples to be dried and the drying rate to be calculated.

Semester VI
1. Polymer Science and Technology (CH-3201):Polymer Fundamentals: Chemistry of Polymer synthesis, Polymer Reaction Kinetics:
Step-growth polymerization, free-radical chain growth polymerization, Emulsion
Polymerization, Ionic and cationic polymerization. Chain statistics and rubber elasticity. Physical
properties and characterization of polymers. Kinetics and mechanisms of polymerization:
condensation, free radical, ionic, stereo-regular, copolymerization. Techniques of
polymerization: bulk, suspension, emulsion, dispersion, interfacial in both semi-batch and
multiphase reactors. Molecular weight distribution and control: simulation of some industrial
reactors.

2. New Separation Processes (CH-3202):Separation Factors for Rate Governed Separation Processes, Membrane Characterization;
Reverse Osmosis: Models of Solvent and Solute Transport, Concentration Polarization;
Ultrafiltration: Types of Transport through UF Membranes, Fouling and Concentration
Polarization in UF, Osmotic Pressure Model utization; Diafiltration: Process Design; Dialysis:
Solute Transport analysis of dialyzer operation, Mode of Dialysis; Electro-dialysis: Types of
Electro- dialysis - Ion Transport Fundamentals, Concept of Limiting Current Density,
Concentration Polarization; Liquid Membrane; Permeation of Gases through Membranes and
Pervaporation.
Advanced topics in multicomponent staged separation processes such as distillation, absorption,
extraction. General design methods flash separation short-cut and rigorous methods.

3. Chemical Reaction Engineering-II (CH-3203):Behaviour of chemical reactions; Behaviour of chemical reactors: ideal and non ideal flow, nonisothermal reactor performance, reactor stability; Heterogeneous reactions: interphase and
intraphase heat and mass transfer effects; Fluid-Solid non-catalytic reactions; Heterogeneous
catalytic reactions.

4. Chemical Technology-II (CH-3204):Role of Chemical Engineer, Elementary Process Flow sheeting P & I diagrams, Inorganic
IndustryFertilizers, Chlor alkalies, Natural Products Pulp & Paper, Oils, Soaps, Herbs,
Petroleum & Petrochemicals: Refining/Crude Distillation; FCC, Catalytic Reforming;
Alkylation, Amination, Hydrocracking, Aromatic Extraction, Plastics, Intermediates, dyes &
paints, Pharmaceuticals, Environmental Pollution & Waste Treatment.

5. Equipment Design (CH-3205):Introduction to Design Process Development, process alternatives, Process Flow sheeting and
simulation using ASPEN PLUS, Conceptual Process Synthesis, Conceptual design of reactors,
pressure vessels, distillation/adsorption columns, storage vessels, Synthesis of Separation Trains,
Cost Estimation & profitability analysis, Heat Exchange Network Analysis, Scale-up & pilot
plant studies, HAZOP and Safety in design, Batch process Design for sequential processing
using SUPERPRO, Continuous plant design (group term projects).

Semester VII
1. Engineering Economics and Management (ME-4102A):Introductory Finance: time value of money, cash flow analysis. Investment evaluation methods:
present worth, annual worth and internal rate of return. Depreciation models and asset
replacement analysis. The impact of inflation, taxation, uncertainty and risk on investment
decisions.

2. Transport Phenomena (CH-4101):Kinematics, Transport theorem, constitutive relations, Equations of motion and their solutions,
Boundary layer theory, Turbulence; Energy equation and its exact solutions, Continuity equation
