The Evidence of Student Learning artifact required me to demonstrate the effects of
teaching on student learning. It involved summarizing the classrooms demographic and background information, developing a summative unit assessment, developing a three-day lesson plan, collecting of data, examining data to calculate student progress, and providing a data-based reflection on the effectiveness of my instructional strategies and interventions. This connects to CEC standards 1 (Learner Development and Individual Learning Differences) and 4 (Assessment). I gained knowledge and skills in learner development and individual differences (CEC Standard 1) while completing this artifact. This experience has given me the opportunity to think in depth about providing the most effective instruction and activities for each student. I was required to look at the individual differences of each student and respond appropriately to each students needs. For example, an ELL student in the classroom had difficulty remembering English vocabulary terms related to a story, I recommended providing more visual and verbal cues/prompts while reading the story and whenever referring to the story. This helped the ELL student in understanding and comprehending the story. This artifact was designed to enhance my knowledge and mastery of assessment (CEC Standard 4). I used my pre-assessment and summative assessment data to make educational inferences on why students showed progress and why others showed a lack of progress. My knowledge of data collection and making data sheets allowed me to better organize and interpret each students data. I have learned that it is very important to incorporate as many UDL principles as possible when creating an assessment; this allows students to show what they have learned in a way that makes most sense to them. All of the students were positively affected by my mastery of the standards. By completing this ESL artifact I was able to teach each student in a way that made sense to him/her. I was able to differentiate instruction successfully by taking into consideration all of the diverse needs of the students. I helped all students make progress in math and literacy, whether it was a lot of progress or a little. I am more confident in differentiating instruction and addressing the diverse needs of my students along with taking and examining data. I will use all of the knowledge I have gained from this artifact to continue to help students grow and progress in my future classroom.
