Sta Position:
Senior Lecturer in Theology (Patristic Studies)
Biography:
I am aProtopresbyterof the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, an oce to which I was elevated by His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos (25 July 2013, vespers
of St Paraskevi), and Senior Lecturer in Patristic Studies at St Andrew's Greek Orthodox Theological College, Sydney.
Here are the outlines of my life.Born in January 1967, on the day of St Gregory of Nyssa, soon after I was baptised in a church dedicated to the Ascension of the
Lord.I waseducated in Romania, in my hometown, Bucharest, rst in the public system for ten years (1973-1983), then in the ecclesiastical system, for ve more
years of theological highschool (Radu Voda Seminary; 1983-1988), followed byfour yearsas an undergraduate student (University of Bucharest; 1989-1993). Between
my seminarian and undergraduate studies, I served in the Romanian Army for nine months (compulsory service), after which I married Otilia. Whilst babysitting for our
daughter, Ioana Maria, I made my rst steps in the world of the Fathers by writing a BTh thesis on the contemporary relevance of patristic anthropology, exploring
works by St Athanasius, the Macarian Homilies andSt Maximus (University of Bucharest, 1993).I received my Doctor of Theology degree from the University of
Bucharest in 2000, after the public defence of a thesis on St Maximus the Confessor, Fr Dumitru Stniloae and the anthropic cosmological principle.

My doctoral supervisor and mentor was Revd Professor Dumitru Popescu, a member of the Romanian Academy. For several years in the nalising stages of my
dissertation, and a little after, I received guidance from the esteemed theologians, Revd Professor Ioan Ic Sr and Revd Professor Ioan I. Ic Jr. Among the scholars
that left an indelible mark on my character and professional activity, I fondly remember Professor Basarab Nicolescu, physicist and philosopher, a member of the
Romanian Academy and a truehomo universalis, and Dr Magda Stavinschi, astronomer, with both of whom I was priviledged to work for a number of years in the
crossdisciplinary eld of science and theology. Before relocating to Australia, in December 2004, I worked full time for nine years in the University of Bucharest,
Faculty of Orthodox Theology, in the department of systematic theology (1995-2004). From 2001 to 2003 I lectured in patristics and theology (sessional) at the
International Academy for the Study of the History of Religions and Culture, Bucharest. In 2002 I was a visiting lecturer (sessional) in fundamental
theology/apologetics at the University of Craiova, Faculty of Orthodox Theology. From 2000 to 2006, I was involved in various research programs in the areas of
science and theology, and transdisciplinarity, funded by grants from the Templeton Foundation.
In parallel, I laboured in the Church as a deacon (ordained on 21 January 1997, the feast day of St Maximus the Confessor), then presbyter and confessor (ordained in
24 May 2001, the feast day of the Lord's Ascension, in a church dedicated to the Ascension and whichpossesses relics of St Gregory of Nyssa). From 2004 to
October 2008, I was parish priest of the Romanian Orthodox parish in Croydon Park, NSW, in which capacity I acted as chief editor of the bilingual magazine
Parochial Life. I was received under the canonical omophorion of His Eminence Archbishop Stylianos of Australia in October 2008. So far, my lifecan be represented
as a series of symmetries and a line, hopefully not at.
St Andrew's Initiatives
In my twelve years of work for St Andrew's Greek Orthodox Theological College, I was main convenor of the sevenSt Andrew's Patristic Symposia, I initiated
thesecond annual issueofPhronema, which customarily publishes proceedings from the symposia, and I invited a series of prestigious international and Australian
scholars to oer lectures at the College. In terms of our educational oer, I initiated the distance education and evening lectures programs and the adult faith
education program. Whilst these are my initiatives, their eshing out is a collective undertaking. I have created also a suite of course units in patristics, currently
amounting to more than ten. My scholarly eorts have received international recognition. See Bronwen Neil, 'Patristics in Australia: Current Status and Future
Potential' inPatristic Studies in the Twenty-First Century, ed. Brouria Bitton-Askelony, Theodore de Bruyn and Carol Harrison (Turnhout: Brepols, 2015) 145-61
